Honest Mistake; Not done on purpose; (if) the car would have been stolen, as they originally thought; they handled the situation well... I can see how they were trying to ease the situation so as not to open the tax payers up to a lawsuit, and also trying to save face because the officer made a mistake; they should double check to be sure; but at the end of the day it was a mistake not done on purpose; you could tell they were all concerned about the situation and the error that had been made and also worried about what could have happened; it is easy for everyone to get on here and just trash the officers and condemn them on every point when they have a difficult job and did not initially mean to make that mistake and it could have been double checked; in dire situations like this it is easy for everyone to gang up on the one who made the mistake and criticize and hate on them as if they have never made a mistake before; yes it could have ended tragically; but most decisions we all make on a daily basis could end in tragedy and many of us make mistakes all of the time; it is part of the human experience; "To err is human; but to forgive is divine"

There was a bright pink water gun visible in my passenger seat. The officer did not do his due diligence and verify that the plate reader read the plate correctly. As soon as the other officer called the plate into dispatch, the dispatch operator clarified that the plate that was called in was not stolen.

So false alarms happen with those constantly - plate designs change a lot and nowadays states sometimes have dozens of different designs to choose from. That's why a few different people reminded him during the video and the other cops were running off at the mouth.
