And I really appreciate that. They didn't pick a female member for the sake of eye candy, but because she's fucking amazing. Not to say she isn't beautiful, because she is, but I like that they put ability first. Because there have been bands where I genuinely wonder why they have a member in the group aside from their looks.

Yeah, and Rob Halford sings kinda good as well, even for a band who didn't pick the singer for his looks.
@lukesomerville66036 жыл бұрын
Part of their allure to me, is the fact that they don't present themselves as a female fronted band with Brittney in the spotlight; they appear as very much a sum of their parts and that confidence just leaks into the quality of their music. Master musicians, amazing band.

Also, the thing about female-fronted metal bands is that they all seem to be locked into a kind of melodic, symphonic style, and they all sound rather similar, which makes bands like UtA and Arch Enemy where they just go all out on the vocals all the more unique and awesome.

Agree completely; they highlighted nuances that are noticed and pointed to in a very unbiased way, and still gave us their emotional color and avoid a bland review. An excellent mix of fact and feeling, and in my opinion its what sets Ryan and George above other youtube reaction channels.
@pietrayday99156 жыл бұрын
Absolutely - reaction channels are a-dime-a-dozen right now, but what separates the better channels from the lesser ones is the addition of some actual skilled criticism and analysis in addition to watching an all-too-often bland and over-acted facial expression and the occasional gasp or giggle for the duration of the song. And when it comes to the quality of criticism and analysis, Lost in Vegas are the best of the best! There was a time when you could count on actual metal journalism to do this sort of thing, but the days of professional, quality metal journalism seem to be a thing of the past. Its spirit lives on with Lost in Vegas, as the best metal commentary I've seen since the height of metal's popularity in the 1990s....

If you want to hear another iconic power/progressive metal band, I suggest *Symphony X* . As for song choice, that's a tough one. Maybe *Inferno (Unleash the Fire)* - it's under 6 minutes long and completely representative of their style. This is an essential listen in your path of metal discovery for sure. Also, this band does write pretty structured songs, so it feels more normal to the ear and not overwhelming.

Josh Geiger I don't know. Paradise Lost was a kind of divisive album amongst some older Symphony X fans mostly due to Russell's heavier vocals. I loved it though. I've been begging for them to react to Epica. Based on the comments on every video I think they'll go to Nightwish first, which is fine. But I also think they'll like Epica more. The Cosmic Algorithm is probably the best song to start with (not Kingdom of Heaven; that's like trying to get someone into Yes by playing Gates of Delirium instead of Roundabout. Or Dream Theater by playing Metropolis pt. 2, and we all saw how that turned out.)

Justin Vaughan while I do understand where you are coming from, it's not long songs they are turned off by. What turned them off from Dream Theater was the instrumental parts where the band goes off on a tangent playing all these technical extravagant parts which they felt did not add anything to the music, which in some ways they are correct. Kingdom Of Heaven has none of that. The song is a cohesive and epic song. However, it probably would be better to start them off on a song that is more brief and to the point. If the song is good enough, it should wet their appetite for more. If I was to make a suggestion, I would pick Chasing The Dragon. That was the song that got me into Epica. Cant go wrong with that song.
@hvypower24726 жыл бұрын
Ryan got difficulty for the structure in power metal but it s in fact one of the most constant way to compose of all the subgenre . Almost every song goes like this 1.Intro 2. Verse 3.pre chorus 4.chorus 5 .Repeat step 2-3-4 6. solo 7. Sometime a transition before of after the solo 8.Get back to chorus and repeat twice 9. Outro Really simple once you used to this !
@bloodysmurf6 жыл бұрын
I think his point was more focused on the fact that the tempo and constant onslaught of the double bass rarely falters or changes... leads to a bit of a feeling of sameness after a while, and lessens the distinction between the sections of the songs.
@hvypower24726 жыл бұрын
@@bloodysmurf Your point makes sense ! For people not used to it, that tempo and melodies of the instruments are not easy to get . I think the vocal's a better reference point in that case . And power metal songs like this needs to be eard more than one time to really appreciate what's going on ! (Sorry for the really average english XD )

Fred Albrecht I don’t remember. Not a current subscriber to their patreon so I can’t go back and watch it. I personally don’t think they’ll like Nightwish. They don’t like operatic vocals and fantasy themed lyrics. Although I would’ve had them do something like Song of Myself or maybe She is My Sin.
@thatoneguy129865 жыл бұрын
Fred Albrecht but she still does operatic style vocals. I love Nightwish but I understand they’re not for everyone. You could do a complete departure from the bands normal sound and have them do Yours is an Empty Hope.

As much as GLS is reacted to these days, for some I really think Romanticide, Song of Myself, Dark Chest of Wonders or Ghost River are better introductions from that concert - its about expectations...lure them in then hit them with GLS

I think this is the first time I've seen a drummer actually doing the RRLLRRLL thing on the bass drums. I've read about it, but to see someone actually DO it throughout an entire song... weird. Cool but weird. I also think you folks need to consider, that this is the kind of stuff a powermetal fan puts on repeat. And when you put something on repeat, you'll be GLAD that there is so much going on that you can't even comprehend it all the first time you hear it. You'll discover new details for weeks when it's this good. Aaand I'm off to find this album.

Great review. I like that you're checking out unfamiliar genres and giving honest, well-thought-out responses. This is a great track. To your point about not seeing a beginning/middle/end, this is the opener on a concept album. It's literally just the beginning. Btw way you were thinking of Chariots of Fire! Nightwish was probably the original female fronted power metal/opera metal band. “Wish I had an Angel” and “Dark Chest of Wonders” are excellent tracks. Also, the original kings of Power Metal were Helloween. Their first album, Walls of Jericho, was a straight thrash album, but their second & third albums, Keeper of the Seven Keys pts. I & II. You should check out “March of Time”, “Halloween”, and “Keeper of the Seven Keys.” They’re basically canon in the power metal genre. Last thing, you should seriously react to “Abraxas” by power metal legends Therion. It’s an incredible song!

Personally I think Planet Hell is a better intro to Nightwish. Ghost Love Score is amazing, but for the same reason I wouldn't suggest Kingdom of Heaven by Epica as many are saying. It may be their best song but not for a first time listener. Unleashed is a better selection. My suggestion is A Cosmic Algorithm. If you're not familiar with that one give it a listen and tell me how anyone could listen to it and not become an instant fan.

A bit off the mark to call them strictly a power-metal band. In addition to that they also exhibit the classic old-school heavy metal sound (Iron Maiden, et al.) and speed-metal elements. If you really like this song you owe it to yourselves to check out the rest of the album, it's amazing.
@pietrayday99156 жыл бұрын
I'd say it's right on the mark, actually: Iron Maiden were to have waited until today to release it's Dickenson-era albums, we'd be calling them a "power metal" band - the only real difference between what we might call "NWOBHM", "80's heavy metal", and "speed metal" versus modern "power metal" are the rather minor points of what year and what country the band got famous in. The newer bands are, perhaps, a bit faster, and the production cleaner and more modern, but the differences after that are relatively minor.... Which is no big deal, at least to me: just one of many examples of how wacky playing the metal subgenre game can get sometimes: it's rarely an exact science!
@regor51506 жыл бұрын

@@regor5150 No. Not 100%. They are less frequent now, but on Demons Of The Astrowaste the growls were way more common and they even had some deathcore/metalcore bits in there. So they have always been a Power/Melodeath hybrid.

Karma, Poetry for the Poisoned, and Silverthorn were all very good. Memento Mori, Beautiful Apocalypse, Fallen Star, Elizabeth, and Poetry for the Poisoned 1-4 are probably their best songs, IMO. But the first ones to grab my attention off each new album on release are always the slow plodding, heavily rhythmic "funeral march" tracks.There's always at least one on each album: The Spell, March of Mephisto, The Human Stain, Necropolis, Veritas, Citizen Zero.
