A little context: Maynard’s mother, Judith Marie, suffered a stroke and as a result, was wheelchair-bound for the rest of her life. But despite that, she continued to hold strong to her Christian faith. As the lyrics to this song make clear, Maynard does not share that faith. Although, his feelings for his mother’s continued belief evolved. When she passed away, he wrote the lyrics to “Wings for Marie” and “10,000 Days” for the Tool album 10,000 Days. Lyrics that helped me with my own mother’s death. I recommend that you give those songs a listen some day so you can fully appreciate the difference from the vitriol shown in “Judith”.

I disagree about the meaning of lyrics, not just this song, but any song, or any poem. The writer has a certain idea, meaning when writing it, but as soon as it's released, the original meaning loses shapes and it changes, transforms into a shape that is provided by the reader, listener. The new meaning doesn't make the original meaning... meaningless (sorry, couldn't resist), but to me, as a listener in this case, it may be nothing more than just a vague guide in order to help me reach my own interpretation of it.

The difference between Tool and APC is that APC is usually simpler, softer, has shorter songs, and are more alternative rock than progressive metal / hard rock. I slightly prefer Tool to APC but APC is still incredible. They still display the fantastic musicianship that Tool does, but their songs are more straightforward with a standard structure. Oh also this song leans on the heavier side for them. Definitely do "The Outsider" for your next APC pick though! It's the "Judith" of their second album; guaranteed you'll both love it!

Judith was Maynard James Keenan's mother's name. She was a very religious person. One day she had a stroke that left her in a wheelchair partially paralyzed. This stroke only strengthened her belief in God - something that Maynard found to be pretty ironic. The lyrics in this song reflect how he felt about the whole situation.

Maynard to me is such an anomaly. I haven't really resonated with any other vocalist like Maynard. You can FEEL his emotions when he belts out. Listen to “Daddy” by Korn. Jon Davis, the singer, was molested as a child, and his parents did not believe him and the abuse continued. In “Daddy,” he has a legitimate emotional breakdown in the song, and at first his bandmates thought it was just him channeling his rage. They didn’t know what to do, so they kept playing and what followed sends chills down my spine as Jon comes unglued and spews endless rebukes against his abuser. It is a song so deeply personal, Korn NEVER performed it live for 20 years. He never could face that song, and even if he could, he couldn’t go back to that place emotionally. He performs it now that his abuser is dead. He has healed over the years, but it is still very hard for him to do it. He says he only performs it because he knows his voice can reach children who endure the same things he endured, and wants them to know he has been there too. It is a damn DAMN hard song to hear - for me at least. To have a meltdown during recording, and still publish it on your FIRST album takes some serious guts. here is a link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5aZnKWNi8uBbqs

This is one of APC's earlier songs, too. I think the Tool influence was more prevalent on their first album than subsequent albums. Pet or The Noose would be another good one that's got a bit of a Tool vibe, but is more evolved into their own style.

Maynard is something else; The guy seems inhuman at times. When I saw this on their first tour, my jaw was on the floor. He made it seem like he even had more to give. He was definitely emotionally charged during the performance.
@CitroChannel6 жыл бұрын
If you liked the drumming at the end, you should check out their song "The Noose" which has an awesome drum groove. APC's drummer on their first two albums, Josh Freese, is different than Tool's Danny Carey, but still a top tier drummer and one of the most versatile in the entire business. He's great. As for the difference between APC and Tool, the former is a bit less progressive metal and more alternative rock/metal. Generally they have shorter songs, that are also generally not as complex and with more typical song structures and time signatures, but they are still very creative and definitely morso than most modern alt rock, I'd say. The drumming is definitely different, but both bands have two of the best rock drummers active. While Tool uses their bass and guitar about equally for rhythm and melody, I would say APC, while still having good bass work (especially on some particular songs) the guitar is a bit more prominent as a lead instrument with short solos and cool lead lines/licks and they make more consistent use of a rhythm guitarist in their grooves unlike Tool who only has one guitar player. This is very likely due to lead guitarist Billy Howerdel actually being the co-founder and writer of most of the instrumental melodies for A Perfect Circle. But generally, APC isn't quite as complex or intricate and is a bit more straight forward alternative/art rock, but that is by no means a negative. I would say they are more accessible, but that their songs are also a bit more varied in sound (even if most aren't as complex as most Tool songs) due to not being as focused on the progressive or metal elements. But they still have some killer riffs, leads, drumming and, of course, singing and lyrics courtesy of Maynard James Keenan. The two bands are both distinct, but both equally brilliant. Some people may prefer one over the other and that is understandable and cool, but APC is super talented just like Tool, just a slightly different flavor. That's how I would put it anyway. Cheers, love the reactions and like the polls, but I would say still choose at random from the suggestions too since sometimes the most popular song requests aren't the best. Judith is a great song though and I definitely look forward to seeing you guys react to more APC!

A Perfect Circle is about as much Billy Howerdel's band as it is Maynard's, he's the one who got it going in the first place after all. In terms of comparison to Tool, thematically there are a lot of overlaps but they're explored in slightly different, more "radio friendly" ways, and in terms of the music Tool are a progressive metal band, A Perfect Circle are an alternative rock band, so the two don't muscle in on each other too much. Maynard has come out saying that he writes with two different minds with these bands, - he writes for Tool with a very masculine mindset and he writes for APC with a feminine mindset. He also describes it as left of the brain for Tool (the functional, directional, thinking side) and the right side for APC (the linguistic, emotional, reasoning side)... - His words, not mine, - but he definitely thinks there's a difference, either way. Judith is actually the name of Maynard's mother, she was paralyzed for quiet some time, I'm not sure what illness she had, I think it might've been cancer, but this song was written while she was still alive I believe, so this his feelings towards how he felt about his mother keeping her faith strong while she was going through this illness. The Tool album '10,000 Days' is a reference to how long she suffered before she died (some 27+ years) the song of the same name is in memory of her and is the polar opposite of the anti-god lyrics in Judith, that one is more paying homage to how great she was to him. Edit: It was actually a stroke, I believe this happened when Maynard was 11 years old; referenced in the Tool song "Jimmy"

This is the emotional reason I left the faith. My mom has been paralyzed and unable to speak for seven years. I have many other reasons but this song is the visceral feeling that was the seed for my apostasy. The way this relates to me is: my grandfather 95 yrs old, served to the church since he was 60. Cooked four times a week, distributed food for the homeless in Cuba, matanzas. And then after serving all those years for a cause, his house hit broken into and he was beat to death. That has changed my ways to see religion, to see this song, to see all the things that are important. Not sure what to believe in anymore heartbroken

When you learn something new from your favorite music, that’s awesome. You guys are smart, funny and so entertaining, and pretty easy on the eyes I might add. Most people have explained what this song is about. But it's a 3 part serie, Jimmy talking about himself younger trying to deal with his mother's sickness when it happened, Judith when she was still alive and praying and then 10000 days part 1 and 2 after her death. 10000 days because she stayed paralyzed for around 10000 days. A whole album is named from tool is named 10000 days, and here's why, hf with the trivia !
@JackChurchill1016 жыл бұрын
I did not know that that was what Jimmy was all about... But then again - it took me a year to realise that Stinkfist wasn't just being metaphorical and he was actually singing about literal anal fisting!
@ReignSurvives6 жыл бұрын
Jimmy was certainly about his mothers stroke. Great song. Yeah, Stinkfist does use anal fisting, but it's clearly a metaphor for the way we become jaded to life in general, to relationships, to our feelings, and our hopes. That feeling of not enough even in the best of times that diminishes the good. I think, looking at the song literally really misses the point spectacularly

Maynard has told us in interviews as of late his process for writing music and his involvement with Tool, especially in light of everyone's anticipation on waiting for their new album. According to him, he has very little to do with the instrumentation for Tool and won't write any lyrics or anything until the rest of the instrumentation has been done. Once Danny, Adam, and Justin are satisfied with their product (which takes a REALLY long time btw), Maynard can then write melodies and lyrics. You've heard the masterpieces the band has created, and this is a result of a bunch of perfectionists refining what they've written over and over again. Maynard's side projects, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer, are a result of him wanting to write and make music while waiting for the rest of Tool to "get their shit together." While I don't know for certain just how involved Maynard is in the writing for these other bands, it's safe to say that it's more than Tool. A Perfect Circle may sound Tool-ish, but it is and always will be very different from Tool because Maynard wants to accomplish something different through these outlets.
@tmage236 жыл бұрын
APC is basically done the same way - Billy Howerdel records demos with the instrumentation and Maynard writes lyrics for them (though much of the first album was already written before Maynard joined as it was originally Howerdel's band)
@drewp10766 жыл бұрын
Maynard did an interview recently i believe with Joe Rogan and it seems like he is almost at the breaking point with tool. As you stated in the interview it was the 1st time that he explained the music process of the band. For a long time he would troll the fans as far as us constantly asking how much longer? But it seems like he is becoming like us, by stating pretty much its the others that is taking forever to get the music to him as you stated. I never thought Maynard would be this forthcoming about the process and his own frustrations. Their next work better be a masterpiece for real.

This is by far my favorite APC song, which I would expect for most APC fans, especially if they came over from Tool. Most APC songs move at a different pace, but this one is cutthroat. It grabs you by the collar and does not let go! I live and die at the gym with this tune! This song is thunder rock! Maynard pours out his heart onto the music sheet screaming for his mother's woes, damning her beliefs, but you get the feeling that Maynard is still searching for the answers no one has. Listened to this song a thousand times, but never tire from it. A cherished piece indeed. You guys rock!
