I had a 5x14 Supraphonic back in high school (we're about the same age, Mike). I stopped playing after high school, sold all my gear, and felt lame for about twenty years after doing so. When I began playing again a few years ago (best thing I have ever done) I went out to buy a snare drum, and after spending most of a morning trying out drums, I went home very happily with a used 6.5x14 Supraphonic. Not two weeks later, I was helping clear out my mother's basement when she was moving, and behind a pile of boxes was my old 5x14 Supra! Apparently I hadn't sold it! The shell is pitted to hell now (the Imperial lugs look brand new after a wash) but 100% serviceable and sounding great. Cheers, Mike!

That’s amazing! You’ve got all your snare needs covered with those two.

Love it. I hate that I put myself in this position but about 8 years ago I sold my 70’s 3 piece classic maple and 5x14 Supra for $600 just because I wasn’t really playing them anymore… the setup was a gift for my 14th birthday from my recently deceased father and the past couple years I regret selling it… constantly… wish I would’ve at least kept the snare.

That’s too bad but there’s still a bunch of those kits floating around the used market if you ever want one replace it.

I have a 70's 5x14' . Haven't used it yet because it needs a new bottom hoop. I ordered one, and gunna use it for an upcoming recording. I'm also thinking of getting Ronn Dunnett to mod it with some Steel/Wood Hoops, and maybe some lugs and a throw off!

I’ve got a ‘70s 5x14 with a Silver Badge that has a hand engraved serial number. It’s easily one of my favorite snares, and I’d love to grab a 6.5x14 like yours at some point.

15 years ago I had a dream in which Bonzo told me I had to buy this model snare. So I did. I've got a lot of great snares, but if I could only have one forever, it's this. The newer ones compare just fine with the older ones, and their latest throw-off is a big upgrade over the old P85. Must-own for sure.

I believe the “greatest snare drum ever” has yet to be made. When one thinks about it, a snare drum, in this era of drumming, has to produce 2 distinct sounds. They are a clean and articulate tap and the other is a loud, fat, cracking rim shot, yet we rely on just one instrument to achieve two voices. Why are we using one drum for two sounds? Even in this great video the rim shot sounds really ringy, and the tap is passable. So if we tighten up the snares to get a cleaner tap, then the rim shot chokes. If we loosen the snares and tune the drum down, the rim shot sounds good, but the taps are all flabby and indistinct. Now, let’s tune the drum way up, then we have a pretty clean tap and a very short rimshot with less ring and absolutely no bottom end. There must be a better way. One more thing, before the piano forte, musicians had to put up with a “piano” that could only be played at one volume.

Thanks for noticing my comment. I was hoping to open some discussion regarding the lack of innovative ideas in the drum world. I enjoy your podcast channel and I’m hoping you’ll consider a podcast on real innovators in the drum world, not just fabricators who repeat the same old thing or have new and interesting ways to paint a drum.

Throw it in a dumpster, kick it, abuse it, you still cannot defeat it. After watching this video, I think you could even dump it in "The Ocean" and it would come out victorious. Great drum.

Hey Mike - love the demos! If you can’t do it on a Supra you can’t do it. Have you done a run down on your NickyMoon cymbal setup at all? Which models and what you use them for? If not would love to see one. They sound great!

May I ask what cymbals you are using in this video? I forgot to ask when I made my other post and I’m sorry. Do they say 1 on them or are they Zildjian I series? Thank you.
