I have a lot to say about action cinema, but in the end hearing it from those most directly involved is always going to take it to the next level, so it was great to be afforded this opportunity by Gareth and his team. Top notch interview! Congratulations on a job well done!! I await every new Gareth Evans project with bated breath and this brilliant man has yet to disappoint. I truly believe The Raid Berandal is the greatest martial arts movie ever made. I'm also a huge fan of Safe Haven. I've never been more disturbed in such a short amount of time and the ending stayed with me long after V/H/S/2 concluded. It chilled me in all the best ways and gave me Texas Chainsaw Massacre vibes. The original. It felt like watching a snuff film dispatched from a Hell dimension. Amazing stuff! Gareth is a master of mayhem & suspense. The best thing I took from this interview is the Gareth is saying "Anyone can do this with enough enthusiam, openness to criticismm and studying". I wonder why so many productions with talented and knowledegable personnel fall short by comparison...
@DomoAggro4 жыл бұрын
Everything he said about film history was spot-on. I particularly love that he mentioned both Japanese cinema and the Hong Kong influences in his work. You can track the sudden violence and thought-provoking downbeats in Beat Takeshi movies and the chaotic rhythm and flow of Yuen Woo-Ping's output in Gareth's productions. The gentleman's vast expertise is evident in his films. I can't wait to see his new show and movie.
@Ariel_emerald4 жыл бұрын
its because studios impose budgetary and time constraints, or shop out action features to directors who aren't experienced with action like Evans is. for example, it took several weeks to prepare for the two on one fight scene at the end of The Raid, and a big american studio would not want to spend the time and money to keep the team on the payroll for that much preparation, so they have to rush the action design with a lot less prep time. look at Iko Uwais' work in American films, its much less well shot and designed than his films with Gareth Evans because hes working with filmmakers who dont know how to use his talents to their full potential and are working with budget constraints that prevent them from refining those action scenes.

Raptor1138 I agree with and understand everything your saying but... these Hollywood action films are made on budgets a lot of the time 10 x more that what the raid or the raid 2 was made on so I can only imagine that the reason they don’t hold up is because of an overall lack of passion for the craft
@allamaraine80664 жыл бұрын
Solo Creole Mofo - Absolutely! You’re spot-on. And the list of influences goes on, the more Evans directs. I can spot Fukusaku, Noe, Miike, and Kubrick, among others, in The Raid 2. I legitimately think he’s the best in the action game right now.

I hope he will stick around for a while and will continue exploiting his rather unique style.

Ingo Filmfreak I think it’s like the difference between Jackie Chan’s Hollywood and Hong Kong output. Days of working on choreography and pushing stunt actors to their absolute limit just isn’t something major Hollywood studios or known actors would explore most of the time. However, with the rise of John Wick and the works of Chad Stahelski and David Leitch, I think Evans would get his big Hollywood action break sooner than later.

That's awesome of Evans and the stunt team to put together that scene for you and to even get a interview with him, tells you are doing a amazing job with this channel. Also the voice didn't fit the way I thought you look like lol. I was expecting someone in their 40's and a bit heavy set lol. Anyway, The Raid films will go down in Action cinema history as game chargers of the genre. Both are classics and even if Evans doesn't make films close to them, he always be remembered for those two films. I really liked Apostle but it seemed to have met with so-so reviews and mute responses from viewers. I think it's a film that will probably get better critical responses as the years go on. Gangs of London looks like it's going to be must watch TV. Looking at his younger work, you can see where his career was going to end up. Great interview. Loving the channel. Keep up the great work.

I also distinctly remember thinking that the two or three action scenes in it looked really cool and stylish. I had no idea who was the director at the time, but it all made sense when I learned that it was directed by the same guy who did The Raid. If you haven't watched Apostle, and you're into horror movies, you should watch it, it's great. Don't go into it expecting an action-packed spookfest though, it's more of a slow burn, atmospheric and disturbing type of horror, like The Witch.
