I totally agree with you that Dell missed it BIGTIME with this one. I'm so happy I purchased my M18R1 last year. Spec'ed with a i9 13900HX and RTX4080, I feel I hit the sweet spot at the discounted price I paid. 300 nits isn't a lot, but after traveling with it a few times, it does the job.
@techknowlux10 ай бұрын
@cueball981 Thanks so much. Alienware is considered a premium brand. And it's running only 300 nits displays. That's what I don't get. And why cut out the 4080/4090 option and all the AMD CPU options are nuked as well. I'm not happy about what Dell's done with the m16 r2. The m18 r1 and m16 r1 can still be found on excellent clearance deals. Totally worth the buy considering the 14th generation Raptor Lake Refresh is just a refresh. Maybe 5% better.

@@techknowlux I agree. They really blew it with the changes this year.

@cueball981 I really like the new design, but no 4080 or 4090 and no AMD. Sorry I'll take a hard pass on the m16 r2. If I was really into Alienware I'd get an m16 r1 with AMD CPU and a 4080/4090.

Hey dude great review personally waiting for the M18R3 then purchasing this laptop as hopefully it will have a better screen and more refined than previous models
@techknowlux11 ай бұрын
@Parky-pm2sg Thank you so much. I'm disappointed with the display choices on the Alienware devices again for a second in 2024. Last year it was understandable with the introduction of the x16 and the m16 and the m18. But this year, not acceptable. Everyone else is moving on to higher refresh rate, Mini-LED and OLED displays. Dell needs to step up their game. I can't recommend their laptops until they do so. Especially as the top-tier premium priced products that they're meant to be.

How’s the color bit on this? I’m big on screen brightness and colors when it comes to gaming
@techknowlux2 ай бұрын
The colors are good for gaming and general use. This screen will not wow you though. Alienware has been slacking in the displays and its a shame. If you're picky though you'd want something a bit brighter and more color gamut coverage. Go for 100% DCI-P3 or an OLED display.

@techknowlux16 күн бұрын
@Paul-nu7nj A lot of 4070 equipped laptops this generation didn't get any vapor chambers or high end cooling solutions. That just made the jump from the 4070 to 4080 even more steep in terms of price to get decent cooling.

Can someone help would you recommend Alienware M16 Ultra 7/ RTX 4070 or Legion Pro 13th Gen i7/ Rtx 4070?
@techknowlux8 ай бұрын
tylerpham5516 At that point it's personal preference and price point. Both very similar and great performers. You're not losing much by going with 13th gen over Meteor Lake Ultra 7 unless you're working with AI stuff - and you'd know it if you were.
@idkwhoiam13608 ай бұрын
Please confirm if the battery is still not better than the previous generation, from most reviews I heard that it has gotten much better with the m16 r2.
@techknowlux8 ай бұрын
@idkwhoiam1360 Everyone seems to be raving about battery life being better on the Meteor Lake CPUs. But I have found it to be more or less the same for mixed workloads. Keep in mind that most battery life tests focus on very low brightness around 150nits (lower than you'd actually use normally) and a single task running on repeat.

Overheating is mainly if you go to manual mode and adjust. Otherwise its decent in performance mode. If you buy a $100 laptop cooler you can address most of these concerns. Check out some reviews on my channel of laptop coolers.

@IVANRGTI Prices vary so much by location, country, where you by. Dell has regular pricing, then sale pricing, then Dell laptops at Best Buy and other retailers have different pricing. Prices keep changing. In Canada the price is $2499 CAD but on sale right now on Dell's website for $2299.

@Fatima_33 Walekum as salaam. Hands down it'll have to be the Slim 7i, It's a beautiful machine and balances weight and design with power and performance. There's no point in adding weight with the m16 for not much better performance from the GPU. The CPUs are all very close but the i9 is in the lead. So another benefit for the Lenovo Slim 7i. Go with that. You will love it !

@iAdamSaladin Any DDR5 SODIMM ram module that's rated at 5600MHz speed will work. Doesn't matter which brand. Feel free to pick up whichever is cheapest. Since the 8GB modules seem to be in short supply, you might want to wait or find a deal on a 32GB kit (that's 2x16GB SODIMM DDR5 5600MHz modules).

Honestly alienwares new laptops are lackluster compared to what they used to be. I just sold my m18 r1 with a 4080 and 13900hx because of how dull and boring it was.The overral design just seemed like an afterthought especially considering the original m18 was the flagship model which dual gpus etc. the speakers weren't great the screen options weren't great either. Every other manufacturer is going mini led or oled. Dell is dropping the ball EVERY year. I had a a51m r2 which I loved using and thought was amazing. Thinking about just getting another a51m r2 and just adding an amplifier which would pretty much outperform all these thin laptops gpu wise.
@techknowluxАй бұрын
@coolmodee I'm with you man. I lost interest in AW cuz they've been dropping the ball and HARD. They just seem uninspired and re-hashed year-after-year models with just CPU swaps/updates. And the displays are so boring and bland from a few years ago. And they weigh a ton and don't give you huge gains in performance vs the competition. Dell needs to try harder. Hopefully in 2025.

@techknowlux9 ай бұрын
@manuadhishmj2399 I no longer have mine. But that's interesting. I believe on most new laptops, Bitlocker is enabled by default. In fact, since I often test/install Linux, you have to disable Bitlocker and undo drive encryption to get the USB drives to boot succesfully to install. But the BIG caveat is, that you must be running Windows 11 Pro. It will not be available on Windows 11 Home.
