great info and presentation getting my new KLR Adventure in 3 weeks so been watching all the KLR KZbin content which is mostly American I'm in Australia Coffs Harbour so this is very refreshing also your removal of the snorkel is the best I've seen... after all this research I'm starting to stress about Doohickey Thermo-bobs sump plugs and all the other stuff ... Im a newbie and thought it would all be a lot simpler just get on and ride guess I'll just have to watch more let it un fold and follow your lead ..ive subscribed 👍

Hi mate, happy you liked it. I was much the same as you, agonising over all the little things. My research was divided on the Doo Hickey. The general impression I have got is that it’s been improved enough that you don’t have to worry about it until you have to worry about it, which will show itself at a service time. The thermobob seems to be important in colder countries, but in Coffs you shouldn’t have to worry about it. Sump plugs - I haven’t bothered changing mine, but I did install an SRC bash plate which protects it anyway so I don’t feel like I need it. But yes, the best thing you can do is get on it and ride it and let it tell you what it needs. I already knew how I was going to use mine, so in the way home from the dealership, I bought the bash plate, crash bars and Bark Busters. Have fun, and don’t be afraid to ask questions any time.

685 piston does wonders for the vibrations and oil consumption., and add a little more power as well. Mild porting job while the head is off doesn't hurt. Lithium battery gets rid of a lot of weight - standard battery weighs about the same as the standard muffler. Other things worth doing - low profile sump plug and a metal (alloy) bashplate rahter than the standard tupperware item will help save the cases. And grease all the rear suspension pivots before the swingarm bolt rusts into place.

I believe the dyno is a very destructive device. Butt dyno and common sence mods improve ergonomics , weight, and drivability and even looks. Ive made mods on all my bikes and cars and never used a dyno. I did operate one as a NYstate DMV inspector for emission tests . I do believe they are good for carb and cam work. I just cringe when I see a brand new H2 kawi ran untill sparks come out of the exhaust. Thats not good.

@berttompkins9096 I just got done watching some guy dyno a after market pipe. Pipe made less hp through the whole rmp range except for the last 750mpr so maxed out and it run the motor hotter and lean, they even had the guy online that made the pipe and they couldn't figure it out. My 2012 had a 685 kit, carburettor mods and exhaust etc....it was still a snail on valium. Great, reliable bike, but no speed demon. With a load on, old ladies would downshift and leave me for dead on a hill in their toyota corolla. Make sure you cruise at under 5000rpm or you will use oil. I did a lot of things I shouldn't on that bike, single track etc..,but it never gave me grief. I have a ktm 1290 sas now, no more power issues, but if the apocalypse came and I needed a bike to last with no maintenance...I'd find another klr.

@@adventurebikesaustralia7627 I did NOT know that the new KLR's are fuel injected. I personally would NOT Lean Out the Fuel-Air mixture by just opening up the air box, installing a high flow air cleaner, and swapping out the stock exhaust with a higher flowing one without reprogramming the the bike's fuel injection at the same time. Your going to have a Leaner and Hotter running engine by just increasing air flow without increasing anount of fuel injected.

@@adventurebikesaustralia7627 Yup. I read an article on the results of two separate independent tests they have done on the subject in California. First one was from the late 90s and the other from late 2000s so about a decade in between them. I don't remember the exact number but the percentage of how much cleaner the air got had a period followed by a zero and a 3. You read it right. So the air got cleaner like 0.03xxx%. So, it is clear enough to say all they efforts are either pointless or even a scam. The point I was trying to make was that they seemed to have tweaked the technology as best as they could by the 90s yet the regulations seem -irrationally- to demand more and more while providing no benefit to the environment but harm to our pockets and machines.
