Need to add that when pulling the wound strings through the bridge, make sure to not drag it along on the body. After a few string changes, you'll get scratches showing up. Either hold the string up as you pull like he did in the video, or place a rag on the body just behind the bridge.

Great observation. It’s easy to forget things that have become muscle memory over the years. Thanks for sharing your experience!!

I put a thin neck shim in and did the same setup. Perfection. Buttery smooth.

That’s awesome. I didn’t have to shim the neck but it’s definitely not uncommon on strat style guitars. Thanks for sharing your experience!

This is great, thank you. Any recommendations for cleaning up the sharp frets and natural wood of the neck?
@joehansonguitar

Stewmac.com sells special fret end files for cleaning up the ends. If you don't want to spend that much on those, Amazon has some too. Honestly a small metal file with a fine cut on it can be used if careful. As far as the wood goes, are you talking about the unfinished maple on the neck? Btw, thanks for watching and commenting!

@joehansomguitar thanks for the link, will grab this as the guitar is for my child and dont want them to get discouraged by the roughness. Regarding the neck, yes I am referring to the backside of the neck, not the fretboard. Much appreciated

@justinsane43201 yes sir, the fret comfort is of utmost consideration. Most of these guitars that my younger students have had this issue. On the neck, I have used disinfecting wipes on those types of guitars to break up the oils. A moistened magic eraser would work well also. Just dry it off afterwards. If it was a high dollar American or Japanese guitar I’d use one of the commercially available wood care products.

I don‘t quite understand the notorious concept of just 2 to 3 winds on the tuning post. I know it’s because of unwinding and causing tuning instability. But: why not just 1,5 or one wind or a half? Answer: because it will slip. So two to three winds will not slip out of the peg. Right? Right! Conclusion: why not put 20 or 30 winds (exaggerated) on the post, if only the last 1,5 winds could possibly slip. And: with 6-8 winds the string leaves the post so low that the upward tension and pressure will only allow the last half wind to eventually slip. Well, in conclusion I always do as many winds on the post as possible. Right before the waist of the post gets cylindrical. Thick E allows just 2.5 winds, A goes 3.5, D for 4.5, G for 6.5, B with 7.5 and last the e with 9 wraps. Guys, think about it for a minute, and you will realize I‘m right. 😉☺️😊 Cheers everybodey, and rock on!🤘🏻

What is the radius on these mini strats? Fender says it’s 9.5 but others on the internet says it’s 12

Good question. I dont think it's 9.5, it's a little flatter than that.

Helpful video for beginners. No reason why you cannot setup your own Fender-style guitar. Everyone who can play can easily be taught. If you are going to cut the old strings, why not cut them right at the bridge and not bother running the old strings through the saddles. And it's not pronounced "dee-addario". Pretend the apostrophe isn't there and you'll nail it. Don't know why so many people have trouble with that.

I just finished working on a 2007 squire mini myself today . Serial # IC07120526 made in Indonesia. It's been sitting leaning up against a bedroom wall for years untouched. Starting with a complete fret leveling, then new vintage turners, removed the plastic nut that was cut wrong from the factor and cut a new nut from a bone blank. I had to replace the saddles and springs because of 2 broken springs and miss cut threads on the saddle screws. After all that work and I no you mentioned you used 10's I used 9's , I cut the nut for 9's finished the setup and my intonation was good without adjustment. I really lucked out there in this one because as you know this very rarely happens . I also replaced the metal string trees with tusk string trees. The guitar turned out to be a super charged Volkswagen. All the electronics are original and still working great. 13:05

NICE!! That's awesome. Glad that all worked out for you with your setup. I used 10's mainly because of the super short scale length and the 9's were a bit too floppy for me. I normally use 9's on most of my other electrics though. I occasionally play the guitar during my lessons and my students just give me an odd look which I find funny. Thanks for watching and sharing your experience!
