For most of my guitar playng life, I never had learned patterns for playing lead. I've watched dozens and dozens of CAGED videos over the years but nothing clicked with me. I've always played rhythm, never could grasp what others were doing, making it look pretty effortless. Until now. So...I'm up late last night scrolling through KZbin videos. Up comes a recommended guitar video - your 'Unlock your Guitar Neck with Patterns'. I had never seen any of your videos before. I ended up watching it half a dozen times, making more and more sense to me with each pass. Now this evening, I'm playing along with your video and it's like a darn lightbulb went off in my head! I can actually start to see where the patterns are and I'm playing riffs (very simple and uncreative at this point) up and down the neck. Your instructional style and delivery is easy to follow and your demonstrations are easy to interpret and recreate on my guitar. Unbelievable. Your video unlocked my brain and has given me new life playing guitar. I cannot thank you enough. New subscriber, will be watching your other videos. Thank you again.

You really have no idea how much that means to me. I struggled for so long until i came up with a simple way that made sense to my brain. I wondered for a long time whether I could help others that struggled like me. So 3 months ago, I decided to start making videos for others. Can't believe how fast it's grown and the response I've received. I'm so glad i could help you. Please reach out to me if you get stuck. I really do want people to play what they want and enjoy guitar like I do. Thank you so much

After 3+ years of learning guitar on KZbin this is the most valuable video on learning how to start soloing and finding the root notes. Using the G string as your guide makes it so much easier. Thank you Davey!

Couldn't agree more. I have watched countless videos on learning the fretboard, the CAGED system, etc, but this has been the most useful video of them all. A lot of bells went off in my head as I was listening and now I just need to sit down with the guitar and put this into practice. But I'm really looking forward to improving based on the information in this video! Well done! Keep 'em coming!

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I taught children for 30 years and I learned that if you could make things simple and useful then you had followers. There are lots of amazing guitar players on KZbin that really know their ‘stuff.’ But, often it’s too hard to grasp without going over it a trillion times or who cares, it doesn’t give me what I need. This tutorial just made me sound like a country guitar soloist. Once again, thank you!!!

Excellent lesson. I'm not a lead guitarist but dabbling in adding a few lead type licks to my chords and this definitely helps. I did first learn the notes on the E strings because that unlocked the bar chords rooted on the low E, then did the same with the A. I then use patterns, like down two and over 2, (or 3 depending on the strings), to find the notes on the other strings which are needed to do triads. I like your explanation for notes on the D string. I could already find them but this speeds the process up. (Don't have to think as much.) I've been playing off and on for over 60 years and resisted leaning the notes, as it just seemed to much work, until I found the cage system. It really isn't as daunting as it seemed at first, just learn the patterns and you have it. The biggest problem I've had in doing leads is what notes to target. I wish I'd seen this a few years ago.

These are very valuable insights, man! Not only are they helpful to me, but I’m getting ready to give my grandson his first guitar and teach him some theory. I’ll need to teach him the basics first and not scare him away, but down the road, this could help unlock a lot of the fretboard for him. Cheers!

This is an awesome video. To see the fret-board from the G-string gives a new point of view! Thank you so much for it. What notes do you bend when you show your examples?
@daveyjones4572 күн бұрын
Generally I'm bending on the G string. So in the major I'm bending the note 2 frets above the root note. In the minor, I tend to bend the the G as well... in the BB king box I also bend either the note 2 frets or the note 3 frets above the root.... those are good places to start at least

The only thing I didn't understand is can you play minor and major scales together without the BB King technique and if I can then I could play the BB King with it?
@daveyjones457Күн бұрын
There are ways to mix the two together. I've got a few videos up that talk about it, and I'm going to be doing many others
@andrewpolson4643Күн бұрын
@@daveyjones457 because I've seen videos where you can do major scales over major chords and minor over minor chords I just haven't figured it out good yet!

@@daveyjones457 I subscribed to you and this is first video I've seen of your but will check out some of your other videos but I really like this video!
@daveyjones457Күн бұрын
Yes. You can definitely (and i would recommend) playing major and minor over a major chord.... you have to be careful about major scales over minor chord because they don't always sound good. But I'll go find and link a video or two where I mix the two.
Learning all the nots on the board is easy learn it one string at a time so if you know both e and a you are half way there so it’s not hard if you put the time in
