I’m here, ten years later replying to your comment saying that I’ve just shared Roy’s video on side control escape to teach my boy: “Use whatcha got”. He’s moved countries and is feeling a little down while adapting to the new environment. So, after giving him a few examples of my own, I shared the “Use-whatcha-got philosophy” in Roy’s Jiu Jitsu teaching.

Mr Dean you've just saved my life. Im a BJJ practitioner and unfortunately I cannot have enough lessons to improve and learn escape techniques. This video certainly will help me to perform my escapes from full mounts. Thank you very much sir.

I was taught one or two of these a couple of months ago but now seeing this blows my mind !!! Thank you (white belt newbie) can't wait to use these next time I roll :]

I actually used to watch alot before i started taking classes. I have done 6 months of jiu jitsu now. And to be honest, watching, observing is one thing but actually doing it is a whole different thing. You will almost gone blank when you do it live. Especially when rolling, experience and the feel for it is all it's matter. Trust me i been there ;).

@00firebird LOL... 26 people now. Anyone that "doesn't like" Roy Dean's videos truly doesn't understand anything about the grappling arts. His instruction is clear, he technique is flawless, and his videos are of top-knotch quality. Thanks for all you do for the grappling community, Roy!

i totally agree with you on this point. I think escapes is survival and is a foundation of jiu jitsu. At the same time i think to be able to learn escapes effectively you will also need to know the submissions. Understand how people submit you will also increase your chance of escapes in term of predicting your opponent next move.
@mangoKush1213 жыл бұрын
the full mount is pretty easy to escape.. i give up my back then get on my knees and roll out of it, it works every time.. sometimes i end up in the other persons guard

Of course, Keep at it. Advice: I'm sure you're used to being the harder and or faster striker like mhua thai and kickboxing to be the upper hand. Its about technique and leverage rather than brute strength. Mind over muscle if you will. Just keep at it. You don't always notice but you're getting better every time you train.

They all work great JarJar. You just cant quit. I constantly work on mount drills and one thing I see is people just stop fighting when they are mounted. Also if your not working on these techniques consistantly youll never get them down.

Our kids just started Jiu Jitsu this summer, and we are frustrated at them always getting stuck under mounts. I think this video is very much needed for beginners. Very nicely explained, so thank you. I'll let you know how it works for them.
@Rico702Vegas5 жыл бұрын
I recommend being extremely selective with who trains your kids. Just because someone is a black belt doesn't mean they have all of their game (i.e. leg locks/hell hooks etc) dialed in. Also, most people have a hard time 1) understanding the particulars of what is going on when they're doing a move and 2) most people can't articulate intelligently enough so that EVERY member of their audience is grasping their instruction nor do they where everyone is following along. I recommend John Danaher's videos and buying a jiu jitsu dummy to practice on. It'll only cost you up front. The rewards of being able to practice anytime you want and show your kids one on one is immeasurable.
@lolll66615 жыл бұрын
it's different for everyone because everyone has a different natural grasp of the art as well as different amounts of time they can dedicate and some instructors are more strict with their belts than others (oldschool places are notoriously strict), but white belt can take anywhere from 6 months to 3 years and the rest of the belts are relative to that. i would say the most common number i hear for getting a black belt is 8-12 years
@TheStigOfDoom11 жыл бұрын
Nice video! The second to last sweep (with both hands on the hip) actually does work for MMA as well. You do leave your face exposed, but performed right your opponent is too busy trying to regain balance to throw any shots.

Excellent. I think positional moves and escapes are crucial. Most white and blue belts spend 100% of their time on pure submissions. I'd like to put in a request for side mount defense and escapes next!

OMG thank you!!! I just started BJJ and I will 100% fully agree that being mounted is not fun. Infact during my previous classes I actually kinda quit when someone full mounted me. I felt outta breath, like if I was suffecating and was completely helpless. And I tried to use the moves my teacher taught me but the guys were more experience so they didnt work. Bottom line, being full mounted does scare me. I will definitely watch this video nonstop.

It will depend on your ability to learn and the school (instructors). There are some bad instructors. But on average, it will take around 4 months when you start get the feel for it meaning you can beat someone doesn't know jiu jitsu your size or bigger. About 6-10 months to get your blue belt. After that it just how hard you train to move up the ladder. About 8-10 years to black belt i would say. Fastest person to get to black belt that i know is about 3 years but he probably do it full time.

@MrColdheadRadioplay no, it is complicated. their are so many moves and escapes to those moves and counters to those escapes, and re- counters to those escapes..... but that is what makes bjj so fun. its like a strategy game in a way. don't give up, you will get good.

Great video! The foot drag escape blew my mind! I love it. I have a question on the very last escape though. When you put both arms under his legs and bridge to roll, can't your opponent stop the roll by just bases his hands out?
