I'm about 6 months from being debt free so I'm watching. I've lived as a homeless Vet in my van under the worst of my PTSD period which is finally dissipating so I have experience with the hardships. I'm 59 years old and finally gave my notice at where I'm living to go full-time van life. I bought an 08 ford E350 econoline extended hightop van, ex handicap van. The floors are perfectly flat, ideal for the bed, cabinets ,etc. I made $160k last year as a union crane operator in the SF bay area oil refineries. Now I can save ALL of that money. I don't have any other debt besides my phone and vehicle insurance. I looked at 4 wooded acres in east Texas yesterday for $60,000. Lots of open areas too besides the trees. That will be my home base when I'm not working in California. In the meantime. I'll be staying in my van by my jobsites til then and go to the gym after work and I'm close to the beaches and mountains in Northern California to hike and enjoy nature. I have a huge sense of peace that washed over me as I'm getting ready to go van life full time. I even got motivated today and worked out at the gym hard, something that i haven't been doing because of depression and anxiety from feeling stuck in my routine. Now I feel like I have freedom.

I worked my rear off for 35 years while taking care of 3 daughters on my own. In 2019 I lost my management job and then was forced to sell my home. I rented a house at $1600 a month and lived off of house sell $ and started my own business. Then Covid hit. I was forced to close my business for a few months and again had to live off of savings. Last year my rent went up to $2300 a month. I moved my things into storage (what I didn’t sell) and am staying in a small room at my daughter’s house. I’m in disbelief. There are months my business doesn’t even break even. And my savings are almost gone. So this is where I am!! I’m finding out there are many of us! And jobs for people in their 60’s in Virginia aren’t out there much. This van life will be my next step! I have no choice. This is scary!

I’m 62 and just can’t do it anymore. Living w family for the next yr after rent increased to $2100, (I’m packing and selling everything I own over the next 2 months,) and then into my SUV. (Lived in the SUV during covid after loosing my apt so I know what some of the challenges are) yes…scary as hell…but better than than how terrified I am of what will happen if I don’t find an alternative to a “conventional” life. Just not a fan of campgrounds either & the restrictions many have for ten year rule! Aaaand the price monthly of campgrounds? Not even fancy resort types Lord Jesus! Upwards of 800.00 plus a month with no dump station you have to pay extra for honey wagon and many times your electric use on top of 800.00 plus campground space! Buying my own land again is the way to go Just now I have to deal with the illegal Gottaways invasion and the bad illegals infiltrating BORDERS including NY VT Maine etc!! Smh Ask about the “ RAPE TREES”! beyond terrifying if you have no Faith or mental acuity on LOA ( Look into Neville Goddard Abe Hicks Tom Kearin for the truth in creating your own reality) Just to name a few teachers …. 💗🙌bottom line I am creating a safe affordable simple back to nature life to experience while I still have “ time” here before returning back to non physical ! ✌️💗🧘♀️👩🌾😜🛸🌞🙏🫶🏻

I have a 2019 GMC Savana cargo van that I converted to a campervan. It has the 6.0 V8. 16 to 17 mpg before I put a high top on it so I could stand up inside. 14 to 15 mpg driving now w/o the trailer, 9 to 12 mpg towing. Bought a 20 ft travel trailer after a year of traveling in just the van. Trailer weighs a little over 4000 lbs loaded. I would not recommend the smaller V8s if you ever want to give yourself the option of towing.... especially if you intend to travel in mountainous areas. Chevy/GMC vans have good ground clearance and can have a limited slip differential.... which is important if you want to wander off-road. Newer GMC vans can have a 6.6l V8 which has greater HP and torque for towing without much of a mpg penalty.

I love living in my van I don’t have to worry about rent anymore but I do have to watch how much I drive though because my gas is now my rent money I can afford to live comfortably but I couldn’t do that while I was renting plus my van is much more comfortable than the flat I was renting now I’m warm during winter & cool during summer whereas my old unit was freezing cold in winter & so hot in summer I’m glad I moved into my van

The nomad life is a wonderful alternative to stationary living as it can be much more affordable, especially if the obstacles of healthcare, mail/address, remote work issues (among a few others) can be addressed. I’m sure Bob has many ways to help solve these and other issues.

At 60 , alone and nearly broke I knew I was screwed if I tried to live like "normal " people. So I've lived in my work truck(semi truck), saved every penny and bought a 23yr old class c rv for cash. I have my old 2002 Chevy Tracker so no car payments and 1 credit card I'm paying off. I'm now saving to put solar in my rv, whew! I won't have the retirement I'd hoped for but everything I have is mine. Keep your fingers crossed for me lol. 🙂

I’ve got 2 1/2 years before I can receive my full Social Security benefit and then I’m going to purchase a van with whatever little money I have and I’m hitting the road! And I have hope now because of people like you, Bob, that have groups and organized people out there that can help us succeed along the way! God richly bless you! See you on the road

I decided to go with the simpler option. I paid off my house two months ago. I don't have a landlord, or bank hanging over me like some executioner. I keep a balance in savings to pay the taxes and insurance for years out. I'm minimalistic with respect to the use of my utilities, and live on a little less than 25% of my net income each month. (I also don't have car payments or credit cards.) I am looking to go with a snow-bird concept shortly. (About 2 years or so from now.) I have friends in the south, but live in the northeast. I'd rather spend winters on the south coast and work 3 seasons up north. I have built the foundation for that plan to work, but there's still a bit more to complete before I go along with the plan. (My employer has a non-medical leave program that allows 3 months continuous, outside of standard vacations, holidays, sick time, etc.) I will buy either a class B or C, and my friends' land is open to me for use. (Local laws are OK with occupying a camper in the areas my friends are in.)

I wouldn't trade it for anything I make it on Social Security in a small pension period And I also have health insurance through my job that I retired from. Being disabled with 3 areas of spinal stenosis, l4 and l5 slipped. Because of that ive been depressed and on cymbalta which caused me to have blurry vision but i love the idea of living like this. I wish I could just rent a parcel of land and live in a cargo trailer. I will watch you guys have freedom. I hope more and more people do this every day. When minimum wage cant even pay for a basic one bedroom, things are wrong. We pay 1700 a month on rent for a very old outdated apartment no balconies. If only

Packed 5 suitcases and my dog and moved to Costa Rica..Here now for 10 years, rent a small rustic home $300 a month inc water elec..Wifi is $60, health ins $85, use the bus and taxi, food prices are going up, so l eat simple meals..l feel safe, have many friends, miss the family, but wifi keeps me in touch..Saved enough $$ to fly back to visit..Just lately to meet my great grandson..There are other options...

It’s so easy to get caught up in the rat race. I bought a place out in the country. I didn’t want to be in the city. But I have a big yard. The grass has to be cut. I have to have a riding lawn mower to cut grass . A push mower for some spots. A weed eater for some spots. All these machines require maintenance. I hate spending time cutting grass. That’s just one small example of stuff you have to do when you have a house. I’m planning on selling and hitting the road soon.

One thing is living in a van is not free either. At a minimum with gas and insurance and the extra cost of things costing more because you aren't in the city or other costs if you are in the city, everyone is looking at like $400/mo or something as a cost for living in a van. And it's not impossible to live in a house for $400/month sharing a room or moving to lots of other places around the world. Anyway, it's just not the only option and people should think about the lifestyle they prefer.

I watch several van life people because I find it fascinating . I retired 2 years ago from teaching . But I planned well and I retired debt free . My teachers pension is only $500 less than my paycheck used to be . I also set up a 457b for years that I can tap into . I have an SUV like some of the ones I see people living in . I find it fascinating but SAD that people are sitting in their vehicles or out doors . Your videos make me grateful to live as I do in a home with a low mortgage , but I may travel in my SUV .
