Unlocking Heaven (Sora vs Pit Remaster 2020)

Funny story: when I was working on Unlocking Heaven for Sora vs Pit, my cat managed to destroy one of my mixing monitors and I was forced to mix it on headphones (which you should never do, especially if you're not used to it like me)
The mix came out way worse than I'd have liked. So, here's how the song was intended to be heard. Hope you guys like this better, I sure do.

This was an unexpected treat, I didn't think your original version was that bad honestly but I can understand how frustrating it is to be forced to hand in something you consider below your personal standards. Sora vs Pit is one of my favorite episodes simply because I love both characters, their breakdowns in the episode and the fight itself of course even though I expected Sora to stomp. I still break out Kid Icarus Uprising every now and then when I have a break, wish it had a remaster on Switch.

Ok I already loved the first one a lot and thought it was underrated. BUT THIS IS LEAGUES BETTER THAN THE FIRST ONE! Nice job👍👍! The only thing the last one did better in my opinion is the end. I don’t like how it just suddenly stops unlike the other one were it kinda slowly fades away.

It's funny how a better mix can change the tone of the song. I didn't change anything about the arrangement, just how it was mixed and mastered! (except maybe something is missing from the end now? there was a missing file in the session and I couldn't remember what it was)

Finally got around to your Unlocking Heaven Remaster. Honestly, I didn't quite enjoy the beginning until the 0:55 mark hit, from that point everything just synced so well together. I wish the more orchestrated and bell tolls sounded a bit louder, which was an issue from the piece since its Original Incarnation. Overall, this is an improvement from the former, but I still find it oddly lacking. However, I believe that's just a me issue. Great work as always Brandon!

Holy fuck this battle would have been way more hype if the music sounded like this. By the way, as a producer, why do you say one should never mix with headphones? I do and I've never noticed any significant problems with decent-quality headphones; I understand where it could be a problem if you're not used to listening through headphones while mixing, but is there another reason?

Primarily the false sense of stereo-ization that comes from mixing in headphones, your perceived L/R channels are far more dramatic than they'd be in most "real" environments. Most headphones also have nasty frequency curves with either far too much or far too little bass in them, which can alter your mix and master in ways that don't translate on other setups and leave the end product feeling either boomy or tinny depending on what your issue is. I'm not saying it's impossible to get decent mixes with them, i've gotten some great mixes out of my reference headphones when on the road and before I got my monitors. Just explaining the issues they cause! It was especially dramatic in this case since I had to switch so abruptly and had no time to re-learn my reference headphones' frequency bias. I'd actually love to hear your stuff sometime if you've got it around.

@@BrandonYates Oh wow, I wasn't expecting a response at all, let alone that last bit. I don't think I'd be worth your time honestly. That makes sense though, pretty much what I figured. I had to look pretty hard for a pair of headphones that had decent quality and good balance, and the only reason I went through that trouble was because I had a predisposition to listening to things through headphones over speakers. I've just never had particularly good speakers to compare it to, so what you said made me wonder if I was missing out on something that's a really big deal... which from the sounds of it I could be.
