From Wikipedia:
Papiamento (English: /ˌpɑːpiəˈmɛntoʊ/)[3] or Papiamentu (English: /ˌpɑːpiəˈmɛntuː/; Dutch: Papiaments) is a Portuguese-based creole language spoken in the Dutch Caribbean. It is the most widely spoken language on the Caribbean ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao) having official status in Aruba and Curaçao. Papiamento is also a recognised language in the Dutch public bodies of Bonaire, Sint-Eustatius and Saba.
Papiamento (Aruba) or Papiamentu (Bonaire and Curaçao) is largely based on Old Portuguese (including Judaeo-Portuguese), and has been influenced considerably by Dutch and Venezuelan Spanish. Due to lexical similarities between Portuguese and Spanish, it is difficult to pinpoint the exact origin of some words. Though there are different theories about its origins, most linguists now believe that Papiamento emerged from the Portuguese creole languages of the West African coasts, as it has many similarities with Cape Verdean Creole and Guinea-Bissau Creole.

Papismento is very flexible idiom, globalized as a caribbean portuguese kriol, derived from cape verdean creole and portuguese. A bridge between germanic and romànic langs together.

It's not only that locals appreciate it you learning Papiamento, but importantly, living on Aruba without learning the language means you are losing out on so much local context and information. You can't really follow anything without it. Sure, you can find niche journalists who give you some articles in English, Spanish or Dutch, but you'll still only be getting small parts here and there and only whatever that person decides to write.

Thank you for your comment. It really highlights the importance of even 'small' languages -- Horton the Elephant, a Dr. Seuss character -- once said 'a person's a person, no matter how small.' And the same is true for languages. They're real systems in a real social context and they are locally super important. Long live Papiamento :)
