In this follow up to a a previous video about TOS, guest speaker, Scott Werden, MD dives in more deeply as to why EMG is not an effective tool for diagnosing NTOS. Part 2 of 2.
Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS). In Part 2, we further explore how EMG is used to detect nerve compression associated with TOS and why it’s an important tool in the diagnostic process. However, we also address the limitations of EMG and why it may not always provide a definitive diagnosis for TOS, particularly when dealing with neurogenic TOS.
EMG works by measuring muscle response to nerve stimulation, helping to determine if nerve signals are being blocked or slowed. This can be useful in identifying nerve involvement, but TOS often causes intermittent or subtle nerve compression, which may not show up clearly in an EMG test. Additionally, because TOS symptoms like numbness, tingling, and weakness can mimic other conditions, EMG results can sometimes be inconclusive or lead to misdiagnosis.
In this continuation of our series, we will highlight how EMG can be part of a comprehensive diagnostic approach that also includes other imaging techniques, such as ultrasound or MRI, and the importance of a thorough clinical examination. We’ll also discuss when EMG is most effective in diagnosing TOS and when it might not be the best standalone test.
If you’re currently exploring TOS diagnosis or are curious about how EMG fits into the process, this video will give you the crucial insights you need. Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe to stay updated with more videos in our TOS series!
