Unmatched Character Reveal: Sun Wukong

Can't tell you how cool it is to see these cards examined in this way. Not too long ago they were just wacky ideas that we never thought would make it into Unmatched. Now, after lots of polish and testing, I can't wait for everyone play!! (BTW, for anyone nervous about SW being OP, I can tell you from experience that he can beat and be beaten by every existing Unmatched character - even Arthur. He can be a real pain in the butt though!)

Nice foreshadowing on how much healing phoenix form can do when combined with 72 transformations. Also, bringing up how cards are affected positively or negatively by another decks cards is really cool. Gaze of stone into Tortoise form is something I would not have thought of with its victory effect.

Yeah the cards on paper look insane. But it may not play out that way in practice because we will find his weaknesses. And also he seems a bit more complex and those fighters are harder to reach their potential ceiling with. Can't wait to play them all! Oh yeah I kinda forgot that part was in there. Really nice video, well done. Great/scary to see you already thinking of similarities/counters etc 😀 Does look powerful, but no feints might make a big difference, and with only one Phoenix form (I think?) there’s a fair chance you just won’t see it

Thanks Nick! Haha I'm always analyzing unmatched, it's what I do! I do agree that the lack of feints may be a weakness against certain fighters. And there is only 1 Phoenix, but can be recycled up to 3 times with 72 Transformations.

Thanks for the video! I think SW's weaknesses will be exposed by fighters like little red - loads of special effects that he mostly has no way of stopping. Popping off damage on card effects or forcing him to discard, and auto damage. IM can hurt him bad with schemes - 10 dmg un-blockable, 4 of it direct and not based on adjacency.. but he will struggle with the defensive powerhouse cards.

My favorite thing about Unmatched is how unique each character feels. Sun Wukong looks amazing, and unlike any other fighter. And that mini!! I think he's going to be a blast to play as, but a headache to play against. Just thinking of the first time I decide to gamble that my opponent is playing Ruyi Jingo Bang, and I don't play a defense card, and they turn it over to reveal Ox Form. Ouch!

Thanks again! And what you are asking about is called a mirror match. Surprisingly enough I have not done that in Unmatched. I don't think the game is meant for that and so I don't have much interest to. Though I could be missing out and not even know it. You should try it out if you're interested and let me know what you think!

HYPE HYPE HYPE HYPE 😂 No, really - Wow! Just...Wow! First of all - when I first saw Achilles`s cards - I thought he may have high value cards with effects playing for opponent - but looks like Su has them. Second - art is just great. I know it`s kinda golden standard for Unmatched, but can`t stop appreciating it. Third - Su looks really powerful, with possibly depleting cards from opponent and have some attacks you want to faint but also one you hate to faint - and his defense is just great. He is like good both at defense and offence, so for now he looks like more tricky version of Bigfoot. Yeah, trickery leads to Su being possibly harder to master - but still he looks soo strong. (I`m not an expert in this game so it`s just casual opinion). For now I see only two disadvantages in Su - not that strong (or questionable) schemes and lack of faints which can hurt him. But one thing bothers me a little - really big amount of high value cards - previously we saw little amount of 4 value defense, 5 value defense only on Willow and Deadpool and 7 value attack is new at all - and this may be a sign of "weapon race" which hurts a lot of card games. I hope this is really an exception and other heroes don`t have such big values on their cards.

Thanks for watching, the hype is real! All the cards look crazy good on paper, but we will have to see how they play in practice. He does have his weaknesses. And Noah from Restoration did say that they look at Bigfoot and Medusa as the golden standard and are careful not to make any new fighters more powerful than they are in order to avoid power creep. So I have faith in their designs and believe they are keeping an eye on the balance.

can't wait to have the set. yesterday when I saw this video I thought it might be a bit too much, but then I started thinking of ways he can be beat and there are some options. BUT, today I'm looking at it again and I'm again thinking it's too much :D he can have card advantage almost all the time and with those defenses how do you even get some damage on him? and with 17 health? ufff, it's gonna be a tough one to crack :D

Even tho he could be beaten it seems pretty strong. Most likely going to be top fighter. Which is not bad, just dont overshadow other characters that much. If they plan to realse so much more i tend to belive a balance set would be nice to have at some point.

I definitely think he could be a top fighter. But we will have to see. A balance patch would be nice if it was necessary, but Restoration has stated that they aren't planning to ever do that. Which is fine for now because I don't think it's really necessary at the moment.

At about 15:00 you reference that if you boost the Medusa card she can then win the combat. I was under the impression that winning or losing combat was decided by the printed value (except with Alice) BEFORE any card effects. Am I wrong ?

I'm afraid you are. Combat victory is determined after the During Combat stage but before the After Combat stage. Attacker wins if they landed at least 1 point of damage, defender wins if they took no damage. Damage done during After Combat effects does not count towards winning the Combat.

Yes Mateo is correct. If values are modified During Combat, those are taken into account since winning/losing combat strictly depends upon combat damage being dealt or not. (Note COMBAT damage, not effect damage)

Yes versatile cards count as either attack or defense depending on how they're played.

I'm liking the strategy behind Sun! Discarding far too many cards is hardly ever good, and that will definitely put him at an advantage against pretty much everyone (Little Red especially!) However, there's one fighter I can actually see where Sun's whole burn-through-your-opponent's-deck strategy would work AGAINST him: Sinbad. Even if the risk is pretty low most of the time, there's always that chance you'll end up making your opponent discard a Voyage card, and that's about the LAST thing you want Sinbad to do, and if it keeps up, Sinbad will be strong enough to actually catch up to Sun, and strong enough to overpower a number of his cards. Yes, Sun will still have some distinct and tricky advantages on his side, but based on what I've seen here, Sinbad very well may be his worst matchup.

Yeah I agree I could definitely see Sinbad doing pretty well against him. Also Robin hood can keep up with the hand advantage from all his draw effects and still hit him behind his clones. And also has a lot of high boost value "throw-away" cards that will help a lot in defending Ox form and dealing damage over Tortoise form. Plus even wily fighting to clear clones and Highway Robberies with no feints to block them.

I had actually been thinking about attacks which can wipe out squad sidekicks pretty quickly, like Bigfoot's Savagery or or Wiglaf's Remnant Of Valor, and thinking about how that could easily be rid of Sun's damage sponge. Even Medusa's fighter ability could just one-shot any clone in her zone, making it kind of moot. The clones certainly have a number of advantages, but also some pretty glaring weaknesses in the right scenarios. Also, I can't help but wonder how Sun's tricks would fare when pit up against the mind of Sherlock Holmes. That'll be a matchup to try when the set gets released!

@@ClawsAndTeeth for sure I'm very interested to see how the Sherlock matchup would go. Wukokg might have the aggression to be able to handle Sherlock though. Especially if he generates a couple clones and uses them to attack since they don't care as much about counterpunch and Sherlock's schemes don't damage them. Plus if you can pin with them, Sherlock is gonna have to attack them to get out. And Sherlock attacking means he has less defense for your aggro pushes. And a point about Medusa's ability: although the clones would die off, and the damage is the same as if Wukong took it himself, it lets him attack Medusa without the fear of a double counter-attack come Medusa's turn.

What is the advantage against Little Red? I see no feints... It means infinite "What large hands you have" 🚀🚀🚀, to knock of the defenses. Bewilderment don't prevent after combat damage of "Once upon a time". Double boost against Ox And Tortoise form with Stones in The belly. Big mouth is scary against the Ox form and the sacond attack of "tricked you" effect if timed.

You're welcome! And yes a clone will essentially just be moved into Wukong's space and He will move to another space in his zone.

I do agree that less health would make him a little more reasonable. From what I heard, he was 14 at one point during testing but started with 3 clones. Instead they brought it up to 17 and starting without clones. So I guess this is a little bit better than it would have been 😅

He honestly doesn't have that much damage outside of Ox Form. But because so many of his cards go 2 for 1 in advantage, he can often land undefended hits.

@@mirkosrndovic the Big 3 are Medusa, Sherlock, and Bigfoot. They were considered the strongest fighters in the game before BoL2 came out. But things have changed and many people argue the Big 3 is no more.
