I always thought this was one of the most clever ideas for a monster in this series based on mechanics alone. It's a monster that sharpens its OWN weapon to use on YOU!

I like how G and GU sorta makes the main monsters a bit like Hunters. Glavenus uses a huge sword, Nakarkos makes armor and weapons outta dead things, Ahtal-Ka exists. The idea sorta falls apart with the others, Astalos needs to charge, Gammoth makes armor outta ice, Valstrax has heavy commitment, Mizutsune is horny, y'know.

My favorite detail about Glavenus is how its skull is used by Rustrazor Ceanataur to sharpen it's own claws for combat. It's a nice little way to show how adaptable some of the monsters are, and how one monsters adaptations can affect others.
@ticoticoelosomagnifico4041
@ticoticoelosomagnifico4041 Жыл бұрын
It's also really cool that if rustrazor doesn't constantly sharpen, their blades rust quickly, showing that their sharpening is something they picked up quickly, not something they've had a lifetime to work on, and that it's more of a topical benefit, rather than a physiological one like Glavenus. Love the care they put into designs in these games.

My guess about why the tail looks blue is the oxidizing of a layer of steel on top; the cracked gaps look black because it's probably more like cast iron, but the layer on top is constantly ground down and heated by the teeth and throat, so leftover eaten minerals might be mixed into the tail to turn it to steel.

Several things: 1.)When you were talking about the toxic compounds that Glavenus deal with in their volcanic environments, it made me wonder if it recycles then into its tail to give it its incendiary properties, similar to a match head. 2.)I wonder how Glavenus deals with other volcanic ore-eaters like Gravios, Uragaan, and especially Teostra? Teostra is especially important since it hordes ore deposits for the same reason as a male Glavenus does. 3.)Lastly, when you mentioned that Glavenus may have to learn to use their tails instead of instinctually knowing how to use it, it made me think of a Glavenus chick spinning its tail in the air like a baby elephant will sometimes do with its trunk since elephants must also gradually learn how to use their signature appendage.

I suspect that the reason Glavenus isn't as hated as Deviljho might have something to do with its method of conflict resolution. Both Glavenus and the Hunter recognize that a broken blade means defeat, and given the monster's stated high intelligence, it's possible that human-Glavenus clashes have an abnormally high rate of non-lethal resolution.

not a challenge but a threat to its safety, a Glavenus that was hunted and survived the hunt will target the hunters either for revenge or for eliminating a threat to its, it's mates and its children's safety, another possibility is that it attacks hunter for their weapons and armor rich mineral, this type of Glavenus can become a specialized manhunter seeking hunters party with every opportunity it has and planning to take them down raiding villages for ore that the smith shop has or the ore deposits a mining village has.

I’ve thought of a neat Skill idea for both species of Glavenus! The Skills could be a feature of their weapons, or armor set Skills, but the ideas were too good to stay in my head! *Disintegrating Blade:* Similar to Frostcraft, acidic crystals build up on your weapons over time. These crystals increase your RAW, but lower your Affinity. Breaking the crystals gives you a massive temporary Affinity buff, but also removes the RAW buff from the crystals. To break the crystals, you must either land a certain attack or combo, depending upon your weapon. The potency of the Affinity buff depends upon how much the crystals had built up upon your weapon when you broke them; once the Affinity buff ends, there will be a brief period before the crystals begin to grow on your weapon again. *Burning Blade:* Similar to the Heat Gauge of old Gunlance, it builds up “heat” to increase the damage of physical attacks, but has different drawbacks and accumulation. Heat is built up by simply performing attacks or charging them, and depletes gradually when not attacking or rapidly when sheathed. While a weapon is hot, Sharpness consumption is increased and one in every ___ shots consume an additional ammo or coating.

Glavenus made me realize that there should be an herbivore that can counter certain monsters. A beast that can sharpen its tail regularly and heat it up makes made me feel that Larinoth was a missed opportunity to make a living shield monster. There's something very wrong when a beast as massive as a gammoth could be taken down in a single strike from Glavenus. On another note i like how Glavenus was following the adaptations of other brute wyverns in the consumption of ore like Uragaan and to a lesser degree, Brachydios. Next weapon monster, sword and shield crab!

Glavenus to me always seemed like an example of how Brute Wyverns were just larger raptorial Bird Wyverns. The primary use of tail and bite attacks, but turned up several notches compared to what the raptors usually do. Also, the Fire element attacks make enough sense from a biological standpoint- the friction created from its teeth and the tail blade creates sparks, which then ignite. Edit: The Manta sleep masks really work. I've had one for about a year and a half now, can't go to sleep without it. The pads are quite comfortable over the eyes, and block out quite a lot of light. If there's any sponsor I'd be fine with on this channel, Manta is one.

I just realized, the on Glav's tail might be inspired by tempering. The jurassic frontier shows marks of where a glavenus rubbed its tail on the wall, and the marks are blue, although the fact that glavenus's tail heats up when rubbed in the Gen cinematic means it could just be that glavenus is also tempering the ore as it rubs it onto his tail. the tail also heats up really easily and a lot so it's definitely not identical to any real iron ores so the blue could also/instead be from these impurities.

It's interesting that juvenile glavenus learn tail skills from their mothers. This means that the females have pretty significant tail mineralization too. I'd imagine their heat stacks are much smaller, since they don't help with display as much, and perhaps for gameplay purposes their tails might be more spear-like in shape and usage if they ever appeared in a future game

On a side node, it was very trippy to hear you say “So I can drone you to sleep at night” during the sleep mask ad, since that’s usually what I use your videos for at 3 am. I usually pass out around 15 minutes in, so I can watch each video around 4-5 times (my record being 9 for the one about subspecies). Your voice and cadence are absolutely perfect for it, along with the content itself since I can listen with my eyes closed and the lack of a story driven narrative means I can just watch the video again if I miss anything by falling asleep. The original's alright, but the Iceborne version really gives me a serious "Emotional Clash of Rivals" vibe, which fits considering he became my favourite monster in the series the moment I firsy fought him. The horn core thermoregulation makes me feel better about the giant godzilla-shaming spikes, but I like the simpler spikes on concept art. With Glavenus and Goss Harag, I wonder if viewing swords through the lens of phallic imagery might help us understand their evolution. Aside from being used in a fight, a blade might be used as an actual display of a bull's sexual prowess and abilities. The bigger the sword the bigger the, well y'know. This has the benefit of being used for combat, but might deter combat between species members. Glavenus bulls don't need to fight, they just need to flash their swords to one another and they can immediately see who has the bigger sword with more reach and a healthier blade.

While Monster Hunter Stories is definitely dubiously canonical at best, often contradicting with main series games especially in terms of specific biological and ecological aspects, I do have to wonder if Glavenus actually make ideal Rider companions. Being quick to hatch, reasonably intelligent, and more importantly, having a significant stage of learning behavior from their mother, they may well imprint onto humans if hatched under a Rider's care and could be trained much more easily than certain other species. They certainly wouldn't be easy to care for, but with their brute strength making them potentially ideal as beasts of burden and their tendency to dig up good mineral deposits, they could provide significant benefit to anyone brave enough to rear one.

30:02 That's exactly why i prefer the World rendition of his theme. The old theme is good, but it's almost too bombastic for a monster that doesn't rely on crushing to kill you (It's more thrusts, slices and sweeps). Yes the World theme is less punchy, but that's the whole point for me : the more orchestral version with the violin, makes the monster less brutish, more subtle and delicate. In MHGU I felt like I was hunting a monster, in Iceborne, on top of that, it felt like a real samurai duel (damn the first time was epic as f), that feeling is further amplified with the subspecies.

I think a pretty simple thing to note is acidic glavnous' seemingly more dexterouse tale and its more precise use, able to position its point in front of its head and turn the blade a lot faster. A fantastic video, I always wrote off the "single egg per season" as being one of the more out there ecologies (and not surprising given how overhyped Glavenus tended to be when Generations released), but I'm glad you managed to make sense out of that bizarre bit of ecology for this monster. Acidic Glavenus' adaptation to the vale is also far more fleshed out than I initially thought, and I only hope subspecies of the rest of the Fated Four learn from what Acidic did and not from what Violet Mizu did. Super excited for the Royal Ludroth episode, as a Tri baby I have a strong connection to monsters introduced in that game and the Ludroths have always been such well designed monsters.

IMO Acidic Glavenus is ons of the best subspeciaes ever introduced in the series. It's the same old "opposite element" gimmick many subspecias get, and instead uses the enviroment as inspiration for a unique gimmick. I also like how the blade attacks are faster as it seem the bladetail is lighter than regular Glavenus. Overall Glavenus is a great addition to the brute Wyvern roster.

I think they should have gone further with acidic by making it leaner to really sell that it’s all about faster, less powerful, but no less deadly strikes as opposed to normal Glavenus’s strikes that are reasonably fast and hit like a truck.

I think that, if they were to make more Glavenus subspecies, it would be pretty interesting if they made them with different bladed weapons as their tails, like a thin, long rapier-like tail with rapid thrusts, or a large, chunky axe tail that moves slower but hits significantly harder.

I'm very late to comment on this video, just found you, but powdered metal is actually one of the most flammable things on earth. It's better than some conventionally flammable things, it's crazy. Powdered iron in Glavenus' bursa would be an extremely viable combustion material for fire breath.

Glavenus is my absolute favourite member of the Fated Four. I just really grew to love him in MHGU, and something about him speaks to me more than the other 3. And Royal Ludroth is an old rival of mine since the days of MH3. We've been going at it for several games, and despite being technically quite an easy Monster, he always manages to trip me up and catch me by surprise. As far as Glavenus's ecology is concerned, I think it might well be more of an ambush predator, minimizing damage to its tail by focusing on precise strikes to instantly cleave through prey before they know what hits them.

I wonder how a Glavenous would react to seeing a Rusted Kushala or the molt. It would be cool to see a cutscene or 1 of those intro scenes that many documentaries do where the camera tracks something that is flying. Once the Kushala has found a spot to molt the camera stays for a couple minutes then you see a Glavenous pop out from behind some bushes and it then approaches the molt.

29:07 Ima be real thats why I love Hellblade, he's Glavenus but more. Like I understand wanting stuff to be grounded but there comes a point I think people need to realize these are fantasy monsters not really animals per say. It would be like saying Smaug from The Lord of the Rings shouldnt be able to talk cause a reptilian throat structure doesnt support speech, no one says that cause hes not a real creature, hes a fantasy monster for the express purpose of being a monster. On sort of the same topic I hope Capcom kinda stop grounding their creatures so heavily in reality, not to say I want a Velocidrome that shoots lasers out of its eyes and can fly for no reason but I want the crazy whacky stuff like Glavenus. You can see where its based in reality, its a giant theropod dinosaur and sort of operates in the same way, but it has some sort of out there whackiness that makes it crazy. Who looks at a dinosaur and goes "yeah that needs to have a giant sword tail". Its kinda why I find Anjanath boring in a way, the back fins and nasil structure are nice but at a first glance its literally just a pink T.Rex.

Ya know. Not every monster in frontier is good. But Abiriorugu isn't a particularly egregious monster, and is a more down to earth take on the whole "tail sword brute wyvern" concept. It feels strange to take such hostility towards it. Same way you seemed to take a Jab at the Vashimu scorpions last video. Like, if you were taking a jab at something along the lines of Duremudira, Eruzerion or Mi-Ru, I'd understand, but it seems more like you just want to take jabs at any frontier monster you can, so if there isn't one relevant to the video you'll just insult whichever one is relevant to the discussion at hand, kind of lumping them all on the same level.. I feel if Espinas wasn't a official monster, you probably would have lumped it into the "frontier is bad" category

I really like the idea of monsters who have essentially Hunter Weapons on their bodies. Like, Glavenous may very well be the inspiration for the invention of the Great Sword. Brachydios for the Hammer, Diablos for the Lance, Nargacuga for the Duel Blades, etc etc. Which is one reason I'd love to see Poborubarumu return. Its a Flying Wyvern that essentially uses a Hunting Horn to buff itself. Early Hunters could very well have seen a Poborubarumu fight, and be inspired to create a weapon based on it.

Why not have Bone blade be the females. They could have less metallic elements due to not maintaining their own territories to gather them from, and as a result be lighter and more flexible relative to their size to help them with the large eggs. it would also make them better suited to teaching offspring who haven't yet had a chance to grow, develop, and reenforce their tail blades. You could also give it a narcotic/paralytic saliva that it would spit up and/or coat its tail with rather sharpening it due to bones not being as able to hold an edge. Lore wise; this could be to weaken potential prey and predators for the young to more easily and safely use them to train.

If we want to include frontier monsters then Glavenus's closest relatives probably are Abiorugu and Giaorugu with the latter two being more basal and in the same genus while glavenus is more derived and belongs in a separate genus but if we assume this is true then that means glavenus is the second closest relative to deviljho sins its stated in the wiki that Giaorugu and Abiorugu are very closely related to deviljho. Disclaimer:take this information with a grain of salt because the deviljho being closely related with aborugu and giaorugu thing is only stated on the wiki and is likely to be false. But what do you think?
@elijahcafazzo-joyette8226

The blue of the tail could be attributed to either the mineral gathered or the heat generated when gathering metals. Iron takes a blue to plum colour when exposed to certain heats for enough time so this could be a result of the heat generated by the scraping. Then theres the mineral. Vivianite is a crystalline iron mineral that - interestingly enough - can coalesce on remains of dead animals that have been buried for long periods, namely the bones that fossilize. The irony here being that acidic Glavenus would likely have a better justification for being blue than classic Glavenus. The blue of the tail could also speak to the tail being tempered or annealed for resilience or hardened damage. I imagine too much hardness would result in damage to internal structures like the vertebrae, so resilience would probably be more likely.

I think Glavenus has a very important culture important for people in the monster hunter universe, for the smiths it is the embodiment in nature of themselves, and for a knight Glavenus represents the ideal knight because: it protects his mate, learns from a young age the art of the sword and goes in a pilgrimage to hone its skills in sword fighting and to develop it's sword, coming back home a knight in shining armor and a sharpened sword. The reasons aren't accurate to Glavenus's real behavior but are romanticized by the knights.

It just occurred to me that besides thermoregulation, another function of Glavenus’ giant back spikes could be weight distribution. Notice how the largest spikes are situated directly above its two legs. Not only is Glavenus’ tail huge, but extremely heavy due to its metallic and mineral makeup. In order to stay balanced while swinging its prominent tail, the bipedal Glavenus would need something to keep its center of mass central, so maybe that is another purpose of the initially ridiculous looking back spikes.

Interesting how you think it's GU's Glavenus whose animations make it look light when it feels a lot heavier than IB's version to me. It seems to throw its tail around with a lot more momentum while some animations in IB would have me believe it's made of paper mache. Though, despite the game's higher graphical fidelity, I think a lot of World monsters feel weirdly weightless and mocap-y, but maybe that's just me
