For Garangolm, I feel the arm power up gimmick should have been tied to environment. In wetter areas, it should have had water, in colder areas it should have had snow, near the castle it could have blast from buried gunpowder, stone in rocky areas, and so on. This would have better emphasized Garangolm as a “steward of the landscape”. As is, it’s just weird seeing Garangolm always get water moss on one arm and blast on the other no matter where it sticks its arms in the ground. The concept of the monster is that it’s attacking with materials from the environment, but the environment doesn’t actually matter when it’s always the same.

I like how Garangolm uses blast and water as an allusion to one story of the creation of a Golem. Really, Garangolm utilizes all four classical elements; Air (steam), Water, Fire (blast), and Earth (the giant rocks it brings up). According to this story, all four elements are required to create a Golem (the Jewish version).
@unnaturalhistorychannel Жыл бұрын
This does make me appreciate him slightly more!
@stronghold325 Жыл бұрын
It's true! While aesthetically he does draw a lot from Frankenstein's Monster, it's probably more accurate to say Garangolm is inspired by Golems as a whole, and the general idea of people creating things from the earth. Mythologically, Golems were humanoid figures made of clay (or mud) brought to life, but in modern-day fantasy the word is now used as a catch-all term for a humanoid figure made of any inanimate material that's brought to life, be it wood, iron, or dead body parts. Frankenstein's Monster (particularly the film version) has had a heavy influence on pop-culture Golems/Flesh Golems, and in a way, he could be considered one himself. Combine it with the general Halloween-Aesthetics of the other two and it's not hard to see why he was chosen as the main design influence. Put it all together and you have a giant Frankenstein Orangutan Golem, playing the part of both the animator and animated, which resulted in Garangolm. Now I'm a very big fan of mythology so I really want to like the guy but sadly just having cool origins isn't enough for me, and I gotta be honest I think Garangolm is a pretty terrible monster as it currently stands. But it'd be a disservice I think not to acknowledge all the effort and thought put into him, even if I dislike the end result. A Golem Monster I think is a great idea for MH, but Frankenstein specifically? I must admit, I think he just doesn't work at all. Had Garangolm been more like a traditional Golem, I think he would've been much better off. But then they also kinda ham-fisted those elements into his fight in very goofy ways (really, you expect me to believe magma is just hidden under the floor of the entire citadel?) that add nothing much at all, so maybe not. Poor thing.

I actually love Lunagaron. It's a sleek and elegant design that even in base form works SO much better as a wolf-type monster than Zinogre ever did with his hulking proportions. Plus, the werewolf gimmick is cool and helps him stand out as we really don't fight too many monsters that have such a difference between their base and enraged form. Garangolm is pretty cool too, I didn't mind his element arms gimmick but your idea of tool use now honestly sounds more appealing. Also I love his design visually, IMO they really nailed the "plant-based giant primate" look, and the frankenstein inspiration is a nice touch regarding the overall European theme of Sunbreak. Also, the interesting dynamic of Lunagarons being monogamous but not hunting or fighting together, plus Garangolms being strangely solitary for what seems like a pretty chill and even friendly monster, could possibly be incorporated into your MH ice age theory: perhaps back then, larger prey was abundant enough in the snowy steppe regions that Lunas could effectively hunt together, or possibly even in small packs. Alongside Tigrex, they would've been among the most common and successful predators on the steppe. Perhaps ice age Garangolms were also more common and operated in family troops like Gorillas, making them a frequent prey item of Lunagaron pairs and packs who adapted to counter their slow, heavy hits with speedy and precise strikes, explaining their surprisingly one-sided turf war (although nowadays a single Luna probably can't kill a Golm just because of all the heavy armor). Once the ice age ended, the sudden dropoff in large prey numbers, including Garangolms who switched to their lone foraging habits to avoid competing for what food was left, also forced Lunagaron packs to do the same. In the new environment that was far richer in small game, the ability to split up their hunting over a wider area became more advantageous for Luna pairs raising pups. This would also explain why Luna's described in-game as a rare monster, as this new environment isn't quite as suitable for them as the ice age habitat they evolved in. But neither Golm or Luna are doomed to go extinct like Deviljho is, because the simple switch in behavior from living in big social groups to smaller ones where they forage alone is enough to ensure their continued survival, albeit in smaller and more spread out populations.

You hit the nail on the head when it comes to the European monster theme, all three of them, Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, and Werewolves are all mainly about dealing with their humanity, whether it be part thereof, artificial, or occasionally losing them completely. That was where the charm of those three monsters are.
@ASpaceOstrich Жыл бұрын
Sounds like there could have been a great story of some myth of humans being turned into monsters that really brought that theme together. I know its really out there, but theres ways to handle that well. You don't need to ever explicitly say someone was transformed by some curse or whatever. You just make these monsters intelligent, and if you want to go the extra mile, you make the ones we fight clearly afflicted by something that has turned them into their more monstrous themed version. If Lunagaron is not a typical example of its species, but rather one afflicted in some fashion, then the "corrupted humanity" angle works, just as corrupted nature. This is actually present in the vampire one, where the version we fight actually explicitly is a corrupted, monstrous version of a more noble base species.

there is a glaring problem with that design premise though. you couldn't define those monsters as "large monsters", as they wouldn't be any different from any other pack monster. how would you even hunt them? the completion of the quest would just be a regular slaying quest of "kill x number of monsters". you certainly can't capture them. it would also be incredibly tedious to get any carves, since you'd be killing monsters at different locations and at different times while still in battle. not to mention that balancing such monsters would be a complete nightmare if they were to actually make it a challenging experience. the combat isn't really designed to take into account crowd control or larger battles, hence why all smaller monsters are weak and 3 large monsters at once is the most you can expect (even then, 3 monsters at once is still considered "pushing it" by MH standards). imagine fighting 5-8 bullfangos that are all as tanky as a Bulldrome and who had their moveset expanded to be the same as regular large monsters. it just wouldn't be possible. you might think fighting a pack of large monsters sounds fun but i can assure you it would be anything but fun, it would easily become the most hated experience in all of Monster Hunter.

I think a better way is to expand more on the blango-blangonga fight, although rudimentary in the first fight something i always found amusing was that when blangonga got angry all the blangos also got angry, throwing ice at the hunter as well as attacking a bit faster, it could be nice seeing that behavior expanded with the underlings gaining new attacks as the chief monster commands them via growls or roars or when the alpha monster gets angry they also have their own anger state, izuchi and baggi does something similar too, with izuchi always having at least 2 tiny izuchis with him at all times, but a higher tier monster who's main gimmick is being the pack leader of tiny monsters and leading them could be an interesting addition, maybe instead of these monsters being babies, they could be gendered like the ludroth case, not only finally seeing the males and females of a species but working together with one being the tiny ones and the main monster being the alpha and quest objective

Not only is it not properly fluked nor show much musculature to really aid in propulsion, but the bottom fin splits into 2 points which only further reduces it from being hydrodynamic. The only notable thing I can imagine it's for is to act as a counterbalance for when it rears up on its hind legs, which is a rather boring explanation but the only one I can think of that fits. That said, I found myself surprised with how much I like Garangolm. I wasn't a fan of the implementation of the dual element, and for a "Frankentstein's Monster" inspired beast, I'm honestly surprised they didn't give it thunder as an element. Imagine it being like Banbaro or Tigrex, where the environment dictates effects of its attacks, but unlike those two, because the strata sticks to its arms, almost ALL of Garangolm's attacks would change. Would be a lot of work, but would help a lot. Also, we need to see Garangolm tilling and cultivating patches of land to show it's an agricultural beast.

I completely agree with your analysis of garangolm and lunagaron taking the aesthetics of the monsters they're based on but not really anything else, making them feel just sorta flat. For lunagaron, I think it would've been interesting to have it be a passive monster in phase 1, or for it to have been a fanged beast related to the palamutes. Something that really isn't interested in fighting you unless provoked. A monster that seems really intelligent and in control. And then have the second phase become this violent transformation into a powerful and unrestrained beast. Just imagine a passive wolf thing that just chills out and maybe even aids you during hunts, but once night falls, it transforms and starts to hunt YOU. I think that would be really cool, and would really lean into that loss of control that werewolves exemplify.
@PowerBalancetheKitsune Жыл бұрын
Lunagaron and of course Odogaron might be linked by a common ancestor due to how similar they look. Plus, if the Ice Age theory holds out, perhaps Lunagaron's ice manipulation could be it using its own environment to its advantage. As for Garangolm, I wouldn't say it's like an orangutan, but perhaps actually Giganthopithicus (might've butchered the name), which could explain it's size. We don't know much on the big ape's socal life much like orangutan Bigfoot, so it could be a parallel to them

Honestly, outside of LR the monster HP gets high enough, even in modern games, that around 7 star quests you could just have 3-5 full on monsters with the HP divided among them that if you made it hard enough to focus fire them due to jumping around and trading places you could probably do a pack fine. Just make sure they attack in rotations and their combos utilize multiple members. If you used Rise style bleed as their status effect it would really capture the feeling that they are compounding on each other's attacks as they surround you.

For the record, I definitely don't think the combat is at its best in Rise. As a game, Rise was indeed far too easy and I think the wirebug vastly trivialised combat with many monsters having no answer to it. Those who think it's the best probably aren't interested in challenge is all I can say. I like some monsters from Rise, like Rakna and Almudron. But I think even if they had more power a lot of Rise monsters (especially the early game ones) are still either forgettable compared to past ones, unpleasant or feel incongruent with the rest of the series.

To be honest, Garangolm fight feels really similar to Duramboros fight. Like, yeah, you fight some gigantic mountain of a monster, and yet it is surprisingly easy overall. So I guess if something looks tough, it doesn’t really always means it IS really that tough.. As for Lunagaron.. Eh.. I get what they was up for with him, but in my opinion he is just TOO MUCH mammalian looking. Like, take a stylised wolf, then replace all its fur with scales, and poof - you have Lunagaron. It’s like other end of a spectrum of meh (imo) fanged Wyvern designs, where on the other side you have things like Great Girros & Dodogama who both looks like pure reptiles, while the core idea of Fanged Wyverns of Monster Hunter is mixing mammalian and reptilian traits into something what doesn’t look like pure reptilian or mammalian monsters but a clever mix of both those things (like Gorgonopsids for example)

This is off topic for the video, but I was replaying World, and noticed it seems like a lot of large monsters tend to nest around Vespoids. Pukei-Pukei, Raths (both in the Forest and Wastes), Barroth, Paolumu, Anjanath, Odogaron, and I think even more that slip my mind all rest there once you get them to low HP, or actively have nests there. I thought it was strange, because even in the case of the monster actively being insectivorous (Barroth and probably Paolumu,) it seems like a hatchling monster could potentially be seriously hurt or killed by the stings.
