very true, also gaining weight is another. Inflammation responses in the gut can lead to weight gain and even more susceptibility to insulin resistance. So some people when switching to a vegan diet are actually reducing internal inflammation, and loose weight even without calorie reduction. Its one of my struggles with internal inflammation, especially in the gut with my food and non food allergies. I struggle to absorb vitamins and minerals sometimes enough that my hair falls out in clumps and my nails chip and break off, among other things.

I can so relate to this. I was diagnosed with IBS when I was 14, and there are plenty of vegan staples that just don’t work for me. Soy, coconut, rice, whole grain in general, and fibre rich veggies are a no no for me. I also have sensory issues because I’m neurodivergent, so stews, sauces and weird textures doesn’t work either. It’s extra frustrating when many do my friends are vegan and criticise eating meat when I’m there, because I cannot physically eat a vegan diet without being in constant discomfort. I try to eat as much plant-based as I can, but it’s still a struggle since others think you’re just faking it. It’s great to see that there are others who have similar issues, and other vegans understanding the difficulty for us.

The problem with this article is that the headline and the way it's written leave people thinking "see, veganism just isn't for everyone, and that's why I'll never give up meat." Veganism still works for most people. The vast majority of people are not going to be allergic to all legumes plus onions and berries, while also being intolerant of iron supplements. It's so important to me that people acknowledge that a vegan diet isn't possible for some people, so thank you.

I had issues with iron absorption on a vegan diet (after 3 years) went to the doctors got bloods done. went on supplements and incorporated more fortified foods and vegan foods with richer in iron... went back to the doctors and got bloods done... increased supplement dosage and intake, increase vitamin c with my iron intake... after further bloods still no increase... so i sucumbed and started eating meat a few times a week.. after a month my iron levels where on the rise... i dont eat it everyday but its done wonders for my energy levels and overall health and lifestyle.. just related to this story and wanted to share

Your concerns about her calorie intake may be pretty off. When you're highly intolerant to things, your absorbtion SUCKS. or at least mine did. @@christina7454 : So true. I found out about my allergies (soy and legumes) when I tried to go vegan. Sometime after about two months on the diet I was horrified when my dinner came out within maybe an hour after eating it looking basically the same as it looked on the plate.
@christina74545 жыл бұрын
@@unchainedmikki same actually! I knew I had a sensitive GI tract but didn't know how bad it was. Legumes are the worst offenders. Need to limit brassica vegetables, overall fiber and grains too. And those are all the foods you want to eat everyday as a vegan for protein, iron, calcium, zinc and so on. (I was veggie in the past without eating protein rich stuff like beans and that took a toll eventually..weight gain, hormonal problems, skin issues, brittle nails, constant hunger/cravings)
@unchainedmikki5 жыл бұрын
@@christina7454 : Yeah, not enough protein is a problem. I was never a big fan of meat so I didn't have enough even as non-vegan (I was more fruit and sides person - pasta, white rice, POTATOES, and keeping hunger at bay with chocolate and caffeine). I slowly gained a lot of weight, my skin, hair, nails, teeth... Everything was bad. Then I changed my diet to clean / whole foods / cooked from scratch. I lost a lot of weight, gained muscle in the gym but still wasn't a fan of regular meat too much and being from the central Europe fish and seafood is not so easy and cheap to get here. I still had a few kilos to lose and I always loved animals and felt bad for eating them so veganism seemed like a logical step. And then all hell broke loose... :D I now eat all kinds of animal products (not lactose intolerant, yay) but I buy from small local farms all my eggs, milk, yoghurt and cheese and some of the meat I eat. When I buy meat at the supermarket, I tend to take stuff in sale that is about to go bad soon telling myself that when those animals had to die making sure their meat won't be thrown away is the least I can do. Because my brother works in Tesco store and he's in charge of meat section and you wouldn't belive HOW MUCH of it stores throw away. Seriously, this overproduction is much bigger problem than the fact that people eat meat.
@christina74545 жыл бұрын
@@unchainedmikki honestly, you do you. If your quality of life decreases from a diet then you don't have to follow it. It's easy for someone who feels amazing to say "even if a vegan diet was making my health a little worse I'd still do it"...yeah, they've never been afraid to go out because they had painful diarrhea pretty much every hour. Something you could also go for is organ meats. Since they're not super popular usually not everything gets sold. Not everyone's cup of tea though. I can't eat plain liver, but I make it into meat balls with some mince, onion and herbs. (Plus you can get the same nutrition that's in a big steak in a small piece of liver so it's something to consider when you want to eat less meat)

The one thing I really appreciate about the vegan fad is how quickly digestive issues and other gastrointestinal disorders are starting to come up in regular conversation, along with a more nuanced understanding of nutrition and dietary health. I follow FODMAP for IBS. I’ve tried a couple days of being vegan and no matter how much I eat, I literally cannot get enough calories in my system and certain vegan staple foods, like cabbage/cauliflower/garlic etc, are on my trigger food list.

I've got a soy intolerance, I'm anaemic and can't really take supplemental iron (even two rice krispy treats is enough to stop me up for a couple of days), and a terrible case of GERD that I'm on omeperazole for. While it's technically _not impossible_ for me to go vegan, or even full-time vegetarian, my foodstamps allowance was recently cut nearly in half, to $102/month, so yeah, between all of my dietary needs and restrictions, being even vegetarian can be *prohibitively expensive*. I literally *cannot afford to* turn away meat from the food pantry, because there's a good chance that may be my only source of protein and iron for the month. I'm so glad that you have a level head about this, and that you understand that some people, if not for their budget than for their own individual biology, just cannot do vegan or even vegetarian full-time. Some of us just have to reduce our consumption of animal products as much as our wallets and bodies can afford to.

Years ago I was vegetarian for a year. I had frequent, serious asthma attacks until I quit. It wasn't until decades later, when I was diagnosed as allergic to yeast and corn, that I realized that my problem with vegetarianism was that I'd been eating somewhat more bread. How many other people have given up on veganism or vegetarianism because they felt terrible due to an allergy or intolerance? A lot of vegan staples are allergenic to quite a few people (beans, peas, lentils, nuts, peanuts, grains, corn, yeast, avocadoes, and mushrooms, for example). Most of us don't stick with a diet until we're near death.

I have had doctor after doctor tell me I HAVE to eat meat if I want to get better. I honestly just cannot do it. BUT that is just me, I would never judge someone in a case like this. As a fellow vegan, I do appreciate your commitment. However, as much as it pains me to say it, I think you should consider including small quantities of animal products into your diet. What you are going through is hard enough, I see no reason why you should compromise your (already compromised) health. I'm not in any way suggesting you should eat meat every day, but maybe once a week would be enough to keep you healthy. It pains me to say that, and I say it knowing that I would struggle massively with even considering taking a bite of any meat after nearly ten years without it...but I don't think you occasionally eating animal products, just to keep your health afloat, is something you should immediately dismiss as an idea. I respect your commitment, and I appreciate your dedication to what I myself consider to be a very important cause, but your life is valuable too; your HEALTH is valuable. If you can't thrive on plant-based proteins, you NEED to find them elsewhere. (If any vegans disagree with what I've said, I'm sorry but I also care about humans, alongside other animals. I don't like admitting it, but sometimes meat is the best option - not often but for the select few. It's those who have the choice, in my opinion, who should HAVE to take the most ethical route.)

I had to stop being vegan for similar reasons (serious food allergies making it impossible to stay healthy as a vegan - I’m allergic to all legumes, including soy. I’m also allergic to peas, green beans, and peanuts. Additionally, I have celiac disease, so no gluten, which rules out a lot of the alternatives made with gluten). Since I’m a tiny little channel very few people saw my video on it, but I talked about it in a video, and it’s still difficult months later to deal with having to eat meat. It’s not something I want to do. It’s certainly not something I want to do to the animals. People can say whatever they want about it, but it’s not a happy choice I made, and I have ended up eating the very minimal amount (of meat) I have to eat to remain healthy. I feel bad for this woman. She tried to make good decisions for her health, animals, and the planet. I guarantee it’s not easy for her. I’m in no way insinuating anything obviously but I am curious as to whether or not Tanya (sorry if spelling is wrong) was actually not eating enough. When I first started the vegan diet it was during the time I had an eating disorder, I became vegan because I could restrict my diet without anyone being concerned and if I did become weak I could say it was just my body getting used to the change. I lost about the same amount of weight Tanya was losing and also became severely anemic and just generally malnourished. I know a lot of other people with EDs also took on the vegan diet for the restriction. Of course I don’t put any genuine stock into this idea and of course Tanya had an allergy, but it’s just a thought. Everything aside I sincerely hope she’s doing better now.

It's unfair to blame the person for not doing it right when sometimes is our body that fight against us. Like for me I'm eggs and lactose intollerant, legums of any tipes give me excruciating colics (I tried for 3 years before giving up on them) and I can't eat soy because it was aggravating significantly my thyroid desease. With no proteins options left I had to get back to eat meet and fish, but I try to eat less of it as possible. But no, I still got negative reaction because I didn't find a solution or it was only an excuse. Unfortunately a vegan diet is not for everyone, don't be mean to people

I really feel for Tanya, and I'm glad the comments have improved. When you decide to be plant based for ethical reasons and then run up against serious health issues, it really f*cking sucks. I can speak to some experience on that. I was never vegan (although that was my end goal) but I was vegetarian for about 2 years after uni. Then I start running up against serious health issues characterized by severe GI distress. I too had a pain of a time getting a doctor to take my seriously and eventually I had to decide between staying vegetarian (my ethics) and eating food that I knew wouldn't upset my GI. I chose my personal health. Its been 4 years and I'm still fighting to find out what is wrong with my body (we know its an auto immune disease and I had/have chronic hives in my GI tract, but we don't know which autoimmune disease I have). I hope that once I get it figured out I can move back towards being more plant based, but for the time being, prioritizing my personal health is more important to me. Could Tanya still be vegan with a soy allergy? Sure she could but it sounds like it would take so much planning, time and effort that its probably just not feasible for most people and I can't blame her for that.

i can't eat any legumes (i swell up like gout, they're high in purines) as i have MCS (multiple chemical sensitivity i have to avoid quite a few things) and some nightshade vegetables (inflammation and swelling). i have to limit nuts to one or two now and again. i have been eating vegan for over twelve years, three at mostly whole food plant based and have been avoiding everything that causes me to react. i eat lots of veggies and whole grains and a little fruit (i don't like sweet things most of the time so not so much fruit). i might taste a bean (because i still like them and make a big batch from dry to freeze) as my husband eats them and then i have to take vitamin c, digestive enzymes especially bromelain to break down the purines so i don't swell (very painful) but i will rarely do that. it can be done, it can be satisfying and healthy without legumes and a lot of other things.

Thank you for making this video. I am REALLY allergic to soy and my body can’t handle a lot of foods like tomatoes, bell peppers, onions, etc. it would be extremely difficult for me to even be on a vegetarian diet. I’m also disabled so I can’t work, I don’t have the funds to make a vegetarian or vegan diet work. I appreciate that you are looking at this through a health perspective.

For iron liquid is also an option. My mom has to take iron daily, and her doctor proscribed her a liquid supplement and instructed her to put it in orange juice.

I'm in a similar situation to Tanya-- I have a handful of chronic illnesses that seriously impact, among many things, my digestion. I can only have certain legumes prepared a specific way in very small quantities, e.g. a quarter cup of fava beans per day (if not paired with any other foods that harm me for the entire day plus the following eighteen hours). These other painful foods include mushrooms, rice, garlic, onions, cauliflower, all sweet fruits except for berries, leeks, fennel, shallots, all nuts, chives, kale, cabbage, chia, hemp, flax... the list goes on and on. Eating these foods causes immense pain, constipation, bleeding, and increases my risk of CR cancer. Being plant-based (not even entirely plant-based/vegan) sapped my energy, and dropped my already-low blood pressure. My hair thinned and my skin dried and I was sicker and sicker every day. I would spend many days lying in bed, unable to move except to the toilet (with great difficulty). My main sources of protein is poultry and eggs, supplemented with the few legumes and nuts/seeds I can manage. Some of the only probiotic foods I can eat (which are a necessary part of my medical diet in addition to prescription and OTC pills) are fermented dairy. I'm not happy about having to contribute to the death and suffering of animals. Yes, I buy from small local farmers--I'd rather be imprisoned in Norway than Gitmo--but I know that doesn't mean that these animals suffer. However, this is how I literally stay alive. A vegan diet is not possible for everyone. A vegetarian diet is not possible for everyone. Hearing these stories and saying that it's not important, that people like Tanya and myself don't matter, that we and thousands of disabled people are a necessary sacrifice for animal rights, is eugenics. Nothing less.

I actually have very similar severe allergies to beans and nuts, and have always had to accept that going completely vegan is not a sustainable option for me. You’ve taught me that there are still options for me to eat ethically, and I’m slowly starting to push myself to do so.
