Unnecessary wrench-knife: nobody ask for it, but now, everybody wants it.
@dogslobbergardens66063 жыл бұрын
Wrench knives sell very well if you keep the price low enough. Smiths like the idea of getting a wrench at a pawn shop or garage sale for a pittance and just bashing it into a blade shape, and buyers like the idea of a knife that used to be something else. Trouble is, wrenches don't make very good knives. And by the time you forge-weld proper blade steel to it... you're back to having to charge more for it due to the additional labor involved.

awesome projekt and nicely done but remember to keep safe while working... at 10:30 when you are sharpening the knife you do it on the upper slack belt that is running towards you! thats really dangerous. if the sharpened knife gets somehow cought in the belt it will shoot right into your face...

When you are hardening the cutting edge, why do you smear the insulating (clay?) over the entire knife, then scrape it back off the cutting edge. I would think that would impede the hardening more than trying to avoid getting it on the cutting edge in the first place? Not trying to be critical - just genuinely curious. Great content, always a pleasure to see you create!

AFAIK wrenches are made of low- to medium-carbon steel. Likely something on the order of 4140 at best. There's just no reason to use real high-carbon steel for a wrench; it doesn't have to hold an edge. It's unlikely that manufacturers would go to the extra expense and forging trouble of using high-carbon steel for a tool like that. So, yes, if one insists on starting with a wrench to make a knife it's wise to forge-weld a proper blade steel like 1075 to it for the edge-holding properties it will provide. I have pondered the amusing scenario of using good high-carbon steel from the jump and just forging a wrench (or wrench-like handle) on the end to get that look, but it's a lot of extra work. Sort of like people joking about making a railroad spike out of good steel and *then* forging it into a knife so the damn thing will actually hold an edge.

I totally agree. I was waiting for a leather wrap or maybe some sort of cord on the handle as well as perhaps slimming the opening of the wrench end to allow your hand to go down the handle more if necessary. But still better than I could do lol

Why not forge the whole wrench out into a blade and laminate the edge with better steel?
@KipreosBoss4 жыл бұрын
Maybe because of the level of carbon in each type of steel. A wrench would need a strong steel that doesn't brake easily but can be scratched more easily, while a knife would need steel that might brake more easily but is hard which wouldn't be scratched easily (ideal for cutting)
@aaronlaxdal93924 жыл бұрын
