He’s trying to keep well-meaning crowds from flocking to render aid, because in a number of public disasters the crowds have prevented ambulances and trained personnel from accessing the worst injured in a timely manner. I’ve seen ambulances trying to crawl through dense crowds when seconds counted, and the announcer is giving the right instructions, trying to get uninjured to step back from or stay out of the paths of medical professionals. He probably saved a lot of lives that day. No matter who ridicules him for it, he’s a hero.

A bunch of extra modifications, lying about age, shortend wings, bad news right there
@FiveCentsPlease9 жыл бұрын
Matthew Guttormson Not really. The NTSB investigation shows that the modifications really didn't factor into the accident. Arguably, having both elevator trim tabs instead of one might have given the pilot more control. Many of the planes flying in the race have shortened wings. The failure was reusing old lock nut hardware on the elevator trim control linkages. These nuts would not torque down, leading to failure of the elevator trim control and instantaneous loss of pitch at high speed and high g-loading. Pilot age was not a factor either. Bob Hannah was 40 years old and piloting Voodoo Chile when he also lost trim control. Hannah was lucky because his plane did not nose over into a crash. The Mustang has the highest number of surviving examples for the WWII fighters, with 160+ flying and another 150+ on static display or in restoration. A commercial market for parts has developed over the last few decades to support these examples but this is unique to the P-51. RR does not make any new engine parts, but independent workshops remake parts when needed and this is expensive. No new engines yet. Mustangs fly with the Parkard Merlin, not the Griffon.

The NTSB investigation (released in August 2012) found that the probable cause of the crash were REUSED single-use locknuts in the left elevator trim tab system that loosened... Untested and undocumented modifications to the airplane contributed to the accident. Hell, the pilot/owner even admitted in a pre-race interview that he didn't really know if his modifications were going to work, not to mention the fact that he lied about his age and lied about the mods he'd made to the FAA. @Sealy5713 жыл бұрын
@Unholybuilder53 Not precisely. The pilot was already pulling up away from the race, since he sensed something wrong with his craft. A trim tab, in and of itself cannot keep the plane level. That is the job of the elevator. The trim tab helps the pilot do the fine tuning, with respect to holding the plane at a given attitude.
@Juno58 Жыл бұрын
@ sealy57: you're wrong, it's the task of a trim tab to keep the plane in level. What else would that be good for?
@notme5844 Жыл бұрын
@@Juno58 The trim tab is usually used the stop the plane from overly pitching, but is not necessary to do so. The pilot can hold the plane straight and level without the use of trim. In this case, the pilot was using trim and traveling at a high speed, so when the tab broke it caused a massive change in elevator input over a short time. The trim tab failing like this wouldnt normally cause such an accident, except when at high speeds and when using large amounts of trim (enough that losing it caused a 17g pull). So yes, the trim tab holds the plane level, but normally losing a trim tab wouldnt cause something like this.
@dewayne56284 жыл бұрын
Of course this can't be proven- even at the time of the accident investigation there weren't enough pieces left, BUT a mechanic's opinion familiar with that particular aircraft AND frames from the doomed flight showing an empty cockpit (no helmet visible) help to support the theory and most probable cause of the crash. The recent modifications had left the nuts to the bolts that secure the pilot's seat untightened, to where after a few laps, vibration and G-force caused the seat to fall backwards. In attempt to pull himself back to control the plane, the pilot is pulling back on the stick, yet the G-force of climbing at 500 mph didn't allow him to get to the foot pedals in time to prevent the plane from rolling (this is where the broken elevator may have been a factor). Slow motion photography showed the pilot's helmet was still not visible in the cockpit glass during the steep angle dive into the ground. It's highly unlikely the pilot ever managed to unbuckle from the harness holding him to his seat, and from visible evidence it's a safe bet the pilot never got back to the pedals or was able to manage a view from the cockpit to be aware of his relative orientation to the deck.
@FiveCentsPlease4 жыл бұрын

The nuts connecting the trim tab controls were too old and out-of-spec and should have been replaced. Those nuts failed and the trim tab was fluttering and no longer working. Without the trim control, the plane nosed up with great force and with an overwhelming G-load that was enough to cause the pilot to pass out. Hello Brian!!, about the woman that you said she was Mexican, just let me be clear, she is not. Her accent is not a Mexican one. Not all the Spanish spooken people must be Mexican. By the way, the same expression you don't like about, it's the same that we the Mexican think about your O my God!!. Don't Be intolerant. Have a nice day ;-)

so they still make parts for this particular aircraft although there are only a handful of them in existance? if i were to own one id try to find one that has the stock engine. which would be the rolls royce griffon V-12. and ill bet rolls royce still makes parts for that type of engine. the griffon V-12 well outdoes the liberty V-12 we built and has alot more horsepower.
@desertfoxleo2 жыл бұрын
Actually, the stock engine for most P-51's was the Packard V-1650 Merlin, which was a licensed version of the Rolls Royce Merlin 66 engine.

i suppose thats a good thing, a piece of history like the P51 mustang fighter plane i think is a bird considered to be a collectors item. after all alot of people would love to own one of the fastest prop driven planes in the world. i know i want one. and youre right it was the merlin V-12 not the griffon. sorry for that mishap

Hey, honey, I have a great idea for our family outing today. Lets go to a air-racing show where thousand pound chucks of metal, moving at 400+ m/hr are flying just above our heads. Also, lets sit in the stands that are located right below one of the high G turns, a perfect location for a "trim tab" to fail. And to make things really exciting, lets hope the race organizers allow really old guys, like 74yo, to pilot these high G planes. Wow, what fun. What could go wrong. 10 dead and 70 injured later. Im always encouraged to see these videos depicting the high intellect segment of our human population attend these events, with their infant children in tow. Human culling at its finest. Keep up the good work.

I love the idiot announcers yammering contradictory orders over the top of each other. Utterly unhelpful, clearly they had never even planned or considered one of the racers crashing into the crowd. Racing souped up antique WWII fighters is a decadent old rich man game that needs to die. That P-51 was older than my grandfather and belonged in a museum, or at most trot it out for a fly-by once a year. If Formula 1 racers were built using parts from Ford Model Ts, they'd disintegrate randomly on the track at high speed too!
@PennHoo9 жыл бұрын
+Alex Tocqueville The plane did not crash because it was old.
@FiveCentsPlease8 жыл бұрын
Technically, they reinstalled small old parts in the flight controls that should have been replaced with new ones. After the NTSB report, the FAA required everybody to replace those parts. A terrible oversight when these planes have been rebuilt to new condition numerous times.
@bmused557 жыл бұрын
The age of the plane is not the problem, its that these pilots modify them for speed. They clipped the wing span and make all sorts of tweaks which makes these birds VERY twitchy at speeds. It was the modifications that led to this crash, not the age of the plane.
@bmused557 жыл бұрын
Granted, but the P51 was never designed to be so unstable and go so damn fast at tree top level. They screwed with the aerodynamics and this is what they get.
@bmused557 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I know about the FAA not knowing about several modifications. A standard P51D will fly just fine without a trim tab. I'll be a little twitchy at speed, but will fly just fine. With the modifications they did to this one, it's nose wanted to pitch up high when at speed, the trim tab stopped that. So when it failed... it was all over. Again, in a standard P51D this would not have resulted in a crash.

THAT ENTIRE PLANE IS GONE AND THE BODY VAPORIZED
@jeffhicks10084 жыл бұрын
I had read somewhere that one of the first responders or coroner was interviewed and when they were looking for body parts he actually found the pilots upper torso still in the flight suit with parachute harness still attached! Gruesome, you would think that a body would be vaporized but I guess not more like fragmented.
