The remains of that Zero (and the complete aircraft painted to resemble the original) is one of the most significant and yet forgotten aspects of the Pearl Harbor attack. The Japanese recognized that several aircraft might be damaged in the attack and designated Niihau Island, the westernmost of the major Hawaiian Islands, as the emergency landing field. This privately owned island was thought to be uninhabited, so pilots were to destroy their aircraft and rendezvous with the submarine I-74 for rescue. Ultimately only Airman Nishikaichi from Hiryū was the only pilot to make it. Of the other 28 aircraft lost in the attack, 27 were shot down over or near Oahu and one got lost on the way back. Niihau is not uninhabited, the Robinson family allow several dozen to live on the island, at the time including Ishimatsu Shintani, Yoshio Harada, and his wife Irene. Shintani and Irene were Japanese immigrants, while Yoshio Harada was born in Hawaii to Japanese parents. After Nishikaichi landed in the field (with anti-landing ditches damaging his plane), Hawila Kaleohano ran up to him, recognized he was Japanese, and took his papers. At the time they didn’t know about the attack and didn’t speak Japanese, the islanders called for Shintani, who departed after a few words. Next they called the Haradas, who after learning of the attack agreed to help Nishikaichi get his papers back and destroy the plane. That night the islanders learned of the attack and decided to send Nishikaichi to Kauai when Aylmer Robinson arrived on Monday. But he didn’t show, inter-island traffic was banned. The Hawaiians agreed to let Nishikaichi and the Haradas stay together, but with four guards. Shintani then offered to buy the papers from Kaleohano, who refused. Shortly thereafter, Nishikaichi and the Haradas overpowered their guards and took their guns. Kaleohano warmed the other islanders before rowing to Kauai at night. Nishikaichi and the Haradas searched, but couldn’t find him, though they burned his house and the plane after taking off a machine gun. The Niihau Incident ended when the Japanese held Ella Kanahele captive and sent her husband Ben to find Kaleohano. He knew he had departed and came back, and when Nishikaichi passed a shotgun to Yoshio he and Irene attacked. Yoshio managed to shoot Ben three times, which in his own words just “made me mad”. He lifted the pilot like one of the island sheep and hurled him against a wall, where Ella bashed his head in with a rock. Yoshio then committed suicide with the shotgun. Ben Kanahele was awarded the Medal for Merit, at the time the highest award possible for a civilian. Irene Harada was imprisoned, but never charged for the incident. Shintani was sent to an internment camp. This incident, where two of three Japanese-Americans directly helped a Japanese pilot, was a major factor in the Japanese internment, stifling any claims that the odds of Japanese-Americans helping the Japanese were remote. Thus began one of the darkest chapters in our recent history.

In addition, that Zero wreckage is one of four known surviving aircraft from Pearl Harbor. An SBD Dauntless, also the only Midway survivor, is on display at the National Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola, Florida. A JRS that searched in vain for the Japanese fleet is in the Smithsonian. And a J2F Duck, beautifully restored to flying condition, is now at the Mid America Flight Museum.

The B-17E is called "Swamp Ghost" and is in that condition since it was (illegally) pulled out of a swamp in Papua New Guinea in 2006. That was an A-3 Skywarrior. My father was the bombardier on the A3-D in the late 50's. At the time the airplane was the Navy's nuclear delivery vehicle, which was superseded by submarines shortly after the A3 came into the inventory. 60's -90 it was an electronic warfare platform and also aerial refuleer. Nicknamed All Three Dead was due to the advanced design, large size and the fact that the crew had no ejection seats. I believe it was the largest plane to fly off the carrier.

That Private Island is the Island of Ni'ihau. It is the Northwestern most populated island of the eight main islands. A damaged zero crash landed there and there was a stand off between some Japanese-American contractors and residents of the island over what to do with the injured pilot. The incident played a minor part in the internment decisions as the Japanese-Americans technically aided the enemy (and some did actually want to help him escape). Eventually there was a stand off and a bit of a shoot out between those that wanted to help the pilot and those that wanted to turn him over to the authorities on Kaua'i (the closest island to Ni'ihau and home to the county government). You can learn more by reading up on the Ni'ihau Incident.

As a side story, a different two seat Japanese air craft( I think a Val) crash landed on a occupied private Hawaiian Island and the people captured the pilot (who survived the crash). The people had no radio, but knew something was up. A week later the weekly boat from the mainland still hadn't shown. To make matters worse a Japanese American broke into the jail and freed the Japanese pilot and together with the weapons from the plane they forced the few towns people to flee. Eventually a very large sheep herding Islander attacked the two Japanese and after taking a bullet, grabbed the Japanese American and broke him over his knee. The pilot killed himself, rather than meet a similar fate. It took several more weeks for a boat from thee mainland to arrive. At thee time this story was suppressed so as to avoid panic.

That one is actually an EA-3D EW aircraft. The Bomb bay has been replaced with a crew compartment for the EW operators. We had them on my first cruise on the USS Constellation in 78. We lost one with all the crew on that cruise. Chieftain is right in that they were commonly referred as the Whale.

@@tolson57 You [and Chieftain] are correct sir(s). Prior to becoming a museum piece, it was engaged in F-14 radar weapons test with Hughes/Raytheon. Apologies.

That's got to be one of the few Aussie Aardvarks that didn't park itself into the side of a New Zealand hill while on exercise. At one point they were doing it at the rate of 1.5 a year.

Theres not much to see, by the time it had been pulled out of the swamp trophy salvagers had already gotten to it and stripped the plane clean... Which probably indirectly made salvaging it easier when Hagen came along and recovered it from the swamp...
