Did Jews Fight Back Against the Nazis?

By the 1930’s, Jewish life had existed in Europe for over 2,000 years. Despite facing expulsion, persecution, and antisemitic rhetoric, Jews survived, sometimes through bribery for security or relocation to “safer” parts of Europe.
While this survival tactic served them for centuries, the Nazis rise to power was swift and calculated. Though historians who study this time period can theorize about where and how the tragic death of six million Jews could have occurred, hindsight is 20/20.
What the Jews of Europe endured was beyond their control. The reality is that there was nowhere to go, and escape was nearly impossible. With surrounding countries and borders closed to Jews, the pre-World War II European Jewish community of approximately nine million had only a tiny number of survivors to carry on Jewish tradition and continuity into the next generation.

My fathers brother who was a doctor in Poland and his 2 daughters were murdered by the Nazi's. His wife escaped since she did not look Jewish, and lived in Manhattan prior to her death. She had to be very sad knowing her husband and 2 daughters did not make it out.

The history we learn is that very few stood up and fought fire with fire we know more of the french resistance than we do the jewish which is very sad! There were three places that I know of that took in Jewish refugees during the Nazi ear. Israel, Shanghai, China, and the Dominican Republic, which shares the Island of Hispaniola with Haiti. None of those places were near EUROPE, ND NONE OF THEM WERE EASY FOR THEM were easy for the European. Jews to get to at the time. But still, some made it. The story of the Jewish community of Shanghai, China, during the war years, deserves it’s own story.

They didn't need to run, that's where they went wrong at. At the time Germany was fighting a war, if they would've overthrown the camps and took over the weapons and Resorces, they could've gone anywhere they please and set up a safe haven for other camps and even help overthrown other camps. Hitler was not about to send the number of troops back to put them back into the concentration camps. He had bigger fishes to fry at the time, what he did in those camps was because they allowed him to do it. He couldn't go to war with over 6 million people trying to live and fight against the other countries, he had to pick one.

Firstly, it was nowhere Jews could went. Secondly, many Jews thought that it was "the same" Germans as in WW1. Thirdly, many European governments and the US knew that happened during the Holocaust, but were so indifferent. Arabs colonized Levant in the 7 century. Until 1 century it was Judea with Jews exectly. In the 1 AC Roman empire destroyed Judea and The Temple. Roman renamed province to Syria Palestina, they wanted to erased memory of the Jewish country and nation. Before Arabs conquest it had never been an Arabic land, region etc. It's important to understand that Jews and Palestinian Arabs live in the region. No one will dissappear. Modern Hebrew is very much derivative of its Ancient ancestor, but with overhauls and additions to adapt it to the modern world as it had not be used widely as a spoken language for over 2000 years.

The Bielski community was only 12,000 vs 6,000,000 killed. That was just a tiny glimmer in an ocean of death. The overwhelming majority did go like sheep to slaughter. Problem of Jewish community leaders falling for lies and fear of reprisal certainly did limit the ability of many Jews to fight back, especially in ghettos. But there were resistance movements in 1943 in many ghettos as it became clear that the Nazis meant to exterminate Jews. And there were Jewish partisans in many areas aside from the former Soviet Union. There were Jewish partisans in Poland, my father and his family included. There were Jewish partisans in the Balkans, including Yugoslavia and Greece. There were Jewish partisans in Italy and France. Resistance included both trying to save as many Jews as possible and revenge on Nazis and their collaborators.

Spectacular video. When going to the holocaust museum in Israel the most emotional part for me was near the middle where it focuses on Jewish resistance. Just normal people who had nothing but fought with everything they had. Reading the journals of young men and women being able to read their words was a tremendous experience. Proud to be Jewish❤

My great grandfather was definetly one who fought back. Got taken by the Gestapo when he was an active partisan, had his teeth and nails pulled, and did not give up a single name. His silence in the face of torture payed off and he was liberated not too long after his capture. Belgium was a rough place back then.

Thanks for this video. This was very personal to me. My family were almost all Holocaust survivors, with my mother, aunt, uncle, and stepfather all from the same town in Poland and all having survived Auschwitz. They are all gone now. My aunt the last to pass away last February at 95. You told this part of the story so incredibly well. So moving. I literally was crying by the end. I actively avoid wallowing in the feeling of victimhood for what my few family members endured. Many years ago I realized how lucky I am even to have been born at all since Hitler tried his damnedest to murder my mother. But even though she and the rest of the survivor generation in my family is gone now, I see Israel as the future for carrying on the resilience and creativity of the Jewish people. I did not have children of my own. But when I recently spent time in Israel and met so many wonderful young Jews there, I feel very much that you are all my spiritual children. I really love what you are doing with these beautiful videos.

Great to hear there were more unsung heroes than history reveals. We know there was a French Resistance and now I’m grateful to know that there were many Jews that fought back in their own way. Probably more than history will ever reveal. I’ve read a lot of history about WW 2 but am still just scratching the surface. I hope more stories come out about people resisting and doing what they can to thwart evil. Awesome job on bringing some of these things to light. God’s Chosen people have been persecuted for several thousand years but somehow still manage to survive and prosper even against tremendous odds. They actually murder 750,000 Orthodox Serbs, Croatians who were actually anti fascism, 60,000 Yugoslavian Jews, and 26,000 gypsies. There sheer brutality and horrors actually sickened the Germans and Italians in Yugoslavia. Then again you actually had certain partisans who were actually Jews who fought against the Germans and their own foreign collaborators. To the Nazis anyone who practiced Judaism but yet weren't Jews like Karaimes in Crimea were actually spared. Hitler himself actually spared the life of a family Jewish doctor who helped out his dying mother of breast cancer as he was actually the leader of Nazi Germany regime.

Powerful. But always remember that it was overwhelming violence that stopped the nazis, not cultural practice. Keep in mind also that there was never retribution for killing nazis; they were going to kill all of the Jews anyway. But for overwhelming violence in their defense, Jews wouldn't have survived. Resistance through practice would have been wiped out without resistance through violence. Am Israel must learn to live like eretz Israel, and quickly. We can't count on others to come to our aid.

@unpacked -- thank you for this great video. please include at the beginning of this video that there is explicit images and footage. Although it is not at all the focus of the video and the majority of it of it is incredible historical footage and the narrator is amazing -- in the video there is (1) an image of a decomposing corpse at 4:28, (2) a person being shot dead 5:05 I'm suggesting this because kids and teens will be consuming this material. It is important to educate without traumatizing, to inform without scaring or scarring. Some schools, for example, have a policy for holocaust teachin to only show people while they were alive, not while dead. Something to consider for Unpacked.

Unfortunately the Jewish population of Europe had nowhere to flee to with the onset of Nazism. Except 2 places on our planet. The Dominican Republic and Shanghai, China. 20,000 fled to the latter between 1933 to 1941. These people were welcomed by the Chinese and could live in peace opening schools & stores. Shanghai already had an established community of Jews originally from Russia and a synagogue (Ohel Moshe). Then it all came tumbling down when the Japanese took Shanghai. The Jewish people were moved into a Ghetto in the Tilanqiao district. Jews weren't the main target of the invaders, 14 million Chinese were killed. Almost all Jews survived in the 'Miracle of Shanghai'. I've been to the Ghetto and a lovely Chinese man showed me inside his house there. On the site of the old Ohel Moshe synagogue there's an excellent Jewish museum. Yes everything isn't on any tourist map but I recommend anyone visiting Shanghai to seek these sites out. Maybe stay at the beautiful Peace Hotel on the Bund, near Nanjing road. The hotel was built by Iraqi jew emigre Sir Victor Sassoon and opened in 1929. It would be great if you made a video of these events

I never went to Hebrew school. Well, no longer than a day. But I have heard that cliché a lot. The Germans were immaculate record keepers, so we know almost everything about their crimes and slaughter, including the precise numbers. But the pushback and resistance? First, if they knew about it, they immensely moved to crush it, and second, when it succeeded, they probably did not want people to know about it. So there are no records. Only the memories and writings of those who participated in that resistance and then survived to tell the tale. To be fair, there is also an idea that ALL the gential Germans welcomed the Nazis in and were fine with the Holocaust if they knew about it. This, too, is not true. There was a lot of resistance against Hitler among the German Gentiles, too, That is one of the reasons that there was only one camp in Germany, and the rest were in occupied Poland. But there was also resistance in Poland, and IN PRETTY MUCH EVERY place that they occupied.

Back in early 60s, jewish historian Raul Hilberg angered many of his compatriots after publishing his massive book The Destruction of European Jews, for claiming that jews barely resisted and in fact many of them collaborated with the germans and the SS guards in the process. Because of that, Hannah Arendt apparently boycotted many previous attempts of Hilberg to publish his work prior to that.

Thee was residence inside the camps, too. For example, a small group of Jewish capos, people were hated as badly as the Nazi officers because they were collaborators with the enemy in return for small favors. Regardless, this small group of capos managed to smuggle in gun ponderer and blow up one of the crematoriums and, quite sensibly, themselves. And they even formed schools within the camps. At least one ultra-orthodox rabbi started a Jewish religious school within the camp, and risked his life to save his students.

Here is a interesting fact about Abba Kovner. He knew a German Wehrmacht officer named Anton Schmidt who unlike almost all Nazis and most in the Wehrmacht he was opposed to the Nazis due to his respect for human life and due to that he opposed the Holocaust and while in Lithuania Anton selflessly and without accepting any payment risked his own life to save those being persecuted and killed saving the lives of 300 people from the Nazis and even attempted to help the Jewish resistance movement whenever he could. Sadly Anton was later caught by the Nazis and instead of being punished for helping save Jewish people he was punished for attempting to help the Jewish resistance movement and because of that he was executed by the Nazis. However Abba Kovner never forgot Schmidt’s kindness mentioning him during the Eichmann trial. In fact it was from Schmidt that Abba Kovner first heard of Eichmann as Schmidt once told him that and I quote there is one dog called Eichmann and he arranges everything. Anton Schmidt was later recognized by Yad Yashem as righteous among the nations for his efforts to save everyone he could and the famous Nazi hunter and Holocaust survivor Simon Wiesenthal even referred Schmidt as a saint.
