Weirdly, I completely missed Sting in the 80s/90s and it wasn't until a trip to London recently (where Epilogue "don't know nothing about me" was playing in a shop) that I became obsessed. My favourite moment so far, is sitting in town traffic with my 7 year old son, where we're experimenting with our voices trying to sing along to "if i ever lose my faith". People giving us funny looks (neither of us are natural singers, just musicians interested in discovering how things work). Brilliant times!

Great analysis, Chris! I have seen Sting perform more than any other artist over the years, and I have NEVER been disappointed by his voice. Total pro. Of course, his greatness isn't just his range, but his phrasing, his sense of rhythm. And his melodic sense, as a writer, is up there with McCartney. So good at finding the poignant and surprising notes. I wonder how this performance compares to other performances of this era, since I have a feeling (I don't know for sure) that there might be more pitch perfect and even more effortless performances, but that hardly matters. The vibe and command of his instrument is all there. That harmony on the final note with Marsalis is a nice touch. Thanks for sending out into the universe the right video at the right time. Maybe you should cover this one. Would love to hear what you do with it in your style.

I came to this same conclusion a few days ago! I was practicing Stevie Wonder's "Saturn" after not singing for a while: I was feeling quite stiff and tense, so I started to mess around by shifting the resonance while singing the lyrics (forward, then the "crow", then a low larynx, open throat and so on) and it unlocked a certain sense of freedom in my voice 😮 quite a game changer!

Nice job. I know there's a casual audience who come here because they like the entertainment aspect of a vocal reaction to whatever happens to be trendy at the moment, but I think the people who come here because they aspire to learn to sing want to learn from the people who have had great careers, the ones who showed they had what it takes to resonate with a big audience and drew those big audiences to the arenas decade after decade. Serious people - people who would pay money to learn to sing because it means that much to them, want to learn from the best! Another singer with an amazing voice, one of the best of his generation, is Steve Perry. I hope he gets featured on your channel. I think just about anyone who is serious about learning to sing could learn a thing or two from Steve Perry.

Chris, I’d be curious if you’ve done content or considered this question to elaborate on. Why then has Sting and most of all those high tenors from that era lose most of this “technique” as they age? I’d almost contend they don’t really understand why they sing like this way as it’s just very natural to their voices. As they age it just goes away similar to how muscle does (Stallone, Arnold, etc) The list is long of greats that aren’t on their previous level. starting with Perry on down. There are some exceptions of course, but what is actually happening in the voice that prevents Sting, Perry, etc from doing this as older guys? Tone, flexibility, range, sweetness, it’s all lost. Makes me think it’s not technique they’re aware of but sadly, it’s the aging voice.

Look how Sting stretches his neck at 12:38 into the video. It looks like he's literally reaching for that high note. Stevie Wonder would do that too. Does it actually help to tilt the head upwards and elongate the neck to sing high notes?
@stopmakingeyesatme1290
@stopmakingeyesatme1290 9 ай бұрын
As far as I know, that's a natural reaction a lot of people have when "reaching" for a high note, but it introduces tension and is liable to make a note seem "farther away" than it has to. I've seen a few teachers actually suggest pointing one's arm downwards while practising high notes to make the note feel "closer" and more connected instead. I am wondering if craning the neck might help narrow the vocal tract and keep the cords connected up there, but even if that's the case there are probably better ways to do that. Sting and Stevie are absolutely amazing singers, but they're probably just letting themselves get caught up in the music and are hitting those notes in spite of the neck stretch, rather than because of it.

Excuse me brother, a question I want to ask you. If you answer it it would be great. It would help me a lot. I'm about to turn 18 and I'm passionate about music. The problem is that here in my country it is not very feasible to take risks with music since I probably won't be able to make a very good living with it, so my question is, what did you study to be where you are? Because I see that you lead a comfortable life, I am very desperate about this whole issue, and I am looking for help from anywhere.

I went to school in Denver Colorado at a small university that didn’t really specialize in what I went there for at the time. My degree is in music industry studies. It’s a bachelors degree. I’m so thankful for my job and what I get to do and honestly I don’t think it’s because of my degree. Instead, it’s the people I’ve met and the relationships I’ve been able to sustain over the years. I’ve done lots of other jobs that have led me to what I do now and I’ve learned a great deal from each one. It’s been a slow grind over the last 26 years of work. I’m 42 years old now

Dear Chris, I am really enjoying your videos! But in this one you are exaggerating: Sing's technique you are trying to analyze is just his manner of singing. That's it, what he is famous fore, It is his signature, these poignant notes. Nature gave him this voice and this ability to jump effortlessly from register to register. He is a lucky guy, who doesn't even think about it....

He’s a tenor, and has a natural vocal tone that is unique to him. I have noticed that heavily “trained” voices can sound inauthentic, where rock, pop and R&B/blues depend on the direct expression of someone’s natural voice. In this video, with all due respect, you go from sounding like a woman, or Freddy Mercury, or an opera singer or Broadway performer, to a cartoon character, and so on. Sting never sounds like anyone but Sting. Being able to hit the same notes with similar technique doesn’t necessarily mean it sounds good. Learning to utilize your natural voice to its maximum ability, without having it change into something inauthentic and generic, seems to me to be a real hurdle with vocal coaching. Becoming an opera/musical theater singer is actually a very bad thing for someone in the “popular music” realm, but it seems like that’s what a lot of vocal coaches do to you. I haven’t found one yet that recognizes that distinction, and avoids that problem. Teaching someone how to “properly” sing can be bad. And it seems like there’s also a tendency to become some kind of impressionist, doing tricks. We can do a lot of wacky things with our voice, but that’s not what most people who want to sing better are looking for.
@duarrdo_g
@duarrdo_g 9 ай бұрын
A sane point of view! But there is a sad (and also valid) side where people who haven’t been born with that x factor also wants to sing at least similar with what they like in a healthy way.
