When I pray the litany of humility I'm asking Jesus to allow me to pursue love and holiness without regard to how my pursuit of love and holiness is being returned by my spouse or my children or my siblings or my friends. This Litany was without much resonance for me when I was a young man, a new husband,a young father, a successful manager, or a well-paid consultant. It has great resonance for me now that I am an old man with successful children busy with their own lives living in a culture that is less and less Christian. It is a great aid in helping me to still view the world with wonder and my family with love.

The Litany of Humilty has changed my life. It's made me truly understand that God has me in his hands and has it all figured out already. It's taught me the true meaning of trusting in and relying on Him. I try to tell everyone about it!

I am a Litany of Humility fan. It was so hard to pray at first. But it had the amazing impact of reducing my anxiety as well as other benefits. I sometimes recommend it to people I think might be ready for it. And - I work as a behavioural psychologist with parents. I see so many parents who are unable to properly love their children (eg with boundaries for bedtime and mealtimes, positive discipline etc) because they are stuck on the desire to be loved by their children - which they misinterpret to mean that their child must always be happy with them. It's tragic.

Ty for this comment. This speaks to me greatly being a mom of 4 young kids and now starting to pray this litany (also after kinda hating it at first). Parenting them is a school of humility for me and my husband! So grateful for all the people and prayers God allows into our lives to help us towards what we were made for, holiness and true union w the Lord.

I LOVE the litany of humility. I'm revert from a year ago and only recently discovered it after praying I'd hear more teachings on overcoming the longing I have for human love. Now, don't get me wrong, I know the desire to be loved can be great and healthy, but I'm a woman and I feel that wound from Genesis is REAL. The world isn't perfect, and the pain of feeling unlovable is excruciating, so when I feel that loss I become my most self-focused and self pitying. I know I'm not alone in this. I so often hear pastors preaching on humility in terms of addressing an unholy need for accolades, praise, and credit. This is great, but I suffer from these things so much less than the desire to feel loved, and the pain of not receiving this-- ESPECIALLY in the romantic sense of love. It is such a relief to recite "From the desire to be loved, deliver me Jesus" throughout my day. Also, before my reversion I went through the new age where positive affirmations are the core work one does. The litany of humility is such a powerful, refreshing, more HONEST articulation than trying to convince oneself they are already perfect and just don't realize it (New Age claim).

Thank you for sharing this comment. I cried reading it. I love the idea of reciting *“From the desire to be loved, deliver me Jesus”* throughout the day. I have struggled a lot with desiring human love. As a young woman, the desire to be loved has lead me in so many sinful and ungodly situations and connections. Freedom from that bondage is very important. Today was my first time of praying this litany and boy was it difficult. But I am grateful that God loved me enough to show it at this time. Especially after a difficult breakup

I remember seeing journal ideas and one was to write about the good you see in others that you may wish to attain. But when fr pine talked about graces we recognize in saints I no longer thought it was a good idea, because it helped me realize if I don't even recognize the graces God has granted me why would I ask for more. Thanks Father Pine

Thank you. Your talk was very clear and uplifting. God bless you. I am so glad because now I have a great explanation of the context behind the prayer. I would be remiss if I didn't say that. I think the prayer could be rewritten a bit to be a little bit more clear. But I know that's not likely to happen in. Maybe it's even odd to suggest. But that's what I think. Clarity in writing. That said with your explanation, I'm back on track with this litany and I love it. Thank you so much. St. Jude. Pray for us.

To understand the Litany of Humility, you need to know the author, Cardinal Merry del Val, Secretary of State to St. Pius X. The story of his life is fascinating. I am surprised he has never been canonized, but then again, he asked for humility! God granted his wish.

I believe he was the son of a diplomat, born in London and fluent in a good few languages. Many people think that he would have made a good Pope but in those days a non-Italian Pope just wasn’t going to be elected. Died relatively young after an operation. And perhaps his prayers were indeed answered.

Fr. Gregory, you’re the best! My difficulty with the Litany of Humility is with the language. You explained well, the meanings behind the prayer. Why not re-write the Litany with the language you used instead of the morbid and completely deprived expression it presently puts forth. People with psych problems or emotional problems should not use the present translation, as they would probably not be able to cypher out the true meaning. Thanks again, Father, great job as always.

Fr. Gregory, could you speak on the importance of making a thorough confession, specifically the penitent not withholding anything during the sacrament of reconciliation? From time to time I get the feeling someone is holding back because they are nervous, embarrassed, or don't recognized the importance of the sacrament. Some people were also instructed to "just confess the sin or few sins you feel the worse about." I try to balance underscoring the seriousness of sin while at the same time putting people at ease in the confessional, even introducing humor when appropriate. I offer appointments if they feel they're going to go long. I've tried to include the importance of the sacrament in preaching as well, but I feel like I'm missing the mark.

I actually have never heard that prayer before, but haved lived most of it. To the pointg of accepting that the only thing we really need in this life is faithful loving obiedence to Jesus. I still pray for deliverence from my financial distress, and monetary debts, I'm ok with how things are, for all is by Our Fathers Will. I ask all to join me in praying daily that Our Father in Heaven would manifest The Holy Spirit, The Great Almighty Paraclete God to and in all these descendants of the Apostles of The Church of His Son Jesus The Christ, that The Holy Spirit would bring all these Bishops to repentance from their finacial corruptions and homosexual predations and all the apostosies and heresies they have promulgated in their pursuit of modernism and power, that The Holy Spirit would make ALL of these Bishops good and faithful shepards of The Church of His Son Jesus The Christ, that The Holy Spirit would protect and raise up all the bishops and priests that have remained faithful to the teachings of Jesus Christ.

But I thank God he gave me the grace and Heavenly wisdom to see the truth and desire to be more humble.

Dear Fr Gregory. For a future video - I'm interested in the question the factual historicity of the Garden of Eden. So I read an article about the Book of Genesis, which said that it should not be read as a strcitly historical account, but that there are some key elements that have to be retained as factual - like the existence of Adam and Eve as first humans committing the first sin personally (and not as if it was just a metaphor of some people, one or many, degrading and becoming evil over time, without any way to pinpoint the exact act that constituted the original sin, or just being evil from the start). Evolution is then something that may possibly be incorporated into a catholic worldview, considered as a way of attaining the creation of Adam and Eve, where God takes some sort of humanoid non human species as a prime matter, which he then infuses with a soul and thus the ability of thinking rationally and choosing freely. Up to this point this idea seems fine to me. Although it doesn't seem to need the existence of a garden of Eden. It seems to me that it would actually be harder to uphold the above idea and the existence of an Eden. Primarily because evolution in some way means also natural selection. I don't want to reduce it to a hard evolutionist statement, where natural selection comes about exclusively through exercise of violence - one species dominiating over the other - I know that there is a debate around this and philosophers like Adolf Portman who would argue to the contrary - but in some way this is inevitable. So 3 possible conclusions to my initial question come to my mind: 1. Yes, there was a garden of Eden and it was in some extraordinary way cut out from the surrounding world, so that predators lived there peacefully with their prey. 2. Yes there was a garden of Eden, which followed regular laws of nature (ultimately there's nothing sinful in predators being predators), but it was just a bit nicer to Adam and Eve (still in a natural way. Through abundancy f.e.). 3. There was no garden of Eden. Adam and Eve lived in the wilderness, survived like cave people etc.

Here's something priests, who have a comfy job for life, don't understand: people in business, people competing for a job, people in sports, people in the entertainment industry, people who must supervise other people, and people in many occupations, cannot afford to have others preferred to them. A salesman cannot rejoice if sale after sale goes to his competitors.and a person competing for a job cannot hope the other person gets the job. How can he eat and pay the rent? Who will feed his children?

Thank you for this prayer and the information. I found out about this prayer thanks to your video, and I understand it’s mostly asking for the detachment from this neediness, but there’s a different issue with it that, kind of, bothers me. It also sort of scandalized my mom when I read it to her. The parts here: “That, in the opinion of the world, others may increase and I may decrease.”, “That others may be chosen/praised” if we know that we should decrease in the opinion of the world, because the world is lead by evil and what the world values is different from what God values, why should we wish that others may increase? I know that it’s about decreasing and humbling ourselves, but why is there the addition to want others to increase in the opinion of the world? If they’ll be increased in the opinion of the world, they might distance themselves from God, so it seems like it’s asking for a desire to wish others to distance themselves from God. Like, wishing for them for what we know is wrong in the relationship with God, and what we don’t want for ourselves. I don’t know if I explained it correctly, but I hope you understand what I mean. It just feels like this prayer is not entirely genuine? God bless you!

“St. John’s saying that God is love has long been balanced in my mind against the remark of a modern author (M. Denis de Rougemont) ‘that love ceases to be a demon only when he ceases to be a god’; which of course can be re-stated in the form ‘begins to be a demon the moment he begins to be a god’. This balance seems to me an indispensable safeguard. If we ignore it the truth that God is love may slyly come to mean for us the converse, that love is God.” [The Four Loves by C. S. Lewis pg. 8] It seems that Lewis' insight that the difference between the Giver of Love and those in need of Love must be maintained in order for us to recognize that being like God does not make us any nearer to God without our humbly asking for (needing) God's grace (Love) in order to live so that we become like God.

😂Everything Father said makes sense. But, he didn’t really explain the last section well. Should we really ask God to be less holy than others or always the least? Something doesn’t sound quite right there. St Paul wanted us to run the race, not necessarily to beg to come in last.

My interpretation of Bishop Barron's statement that Christianity is the best way to heaven and that there are other ways is the same as Jesus' statements on the cross, 'this day you will be with Me in Paradise' where Jesus did not use the words 'repent to the dying thief', also Jesus' statement that 'those not against me are for me' which means that Jesus can as he transubstantiated bread and wine to his Person can use every single thought and matter to draw everything to Himself. Bishop Barron's optimistic statement is to me a form of humility to recognize that God is All Powerful. When opinions of Ralph and Mr Fradd are representative of the ARROGANCE OF SATAN. FOR SATAN REBELLED AGAINST GOD BECAUSE GOD EXERTED UTMOST EFFORT TO SAVE ALL MANKIND. Bishop Barron has the background to make interpretation of Vatican. Ralph Martin's way of speaking and Matt Fradd's way of speaking turn off the most interesting people that God would like to convert. I would rather think God can succeed in the worst sinner rather than have in me an anger that hinders the salvation of the least. This attitude of Ralph Martin and Matt Frad are the very image of a millstone tied around their necks. I am sure Bishop would be more pleasing to God who has faith on salvation of the least, rather than Ralph and Matt repeatedly stating doctrine and their understanding of it. SHAME ON YOU TWO AND THE LIKES OF YOU TOO IF YOU ARE WRONG FOR YOU HINDER THE ENTRY INTO HEAVEN BY THOSE WHO ARE LEAST. HOW CAN YOU THINK THAT YOU ARE MORE WORTHY TO CAUSE CONVERSION OF THESE LEAST MORE THAN BARRON WHO HAS STAKED THEIR SEX LIFE AND THEIR MINDS TO GOD. SATAN WAS A HERETIC BECAUSE HE WILL NOT SERVE GOD WHO WILL GO AFTER THE LEAST.

"You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." When a well packaged web of lies has been sold gradually through time to the masses over generations, the truth will seem utterly preposterous and its speaker a raving lunatic. It’s easier to fool people than it is to convince them that they have been fooled. No one is more hated than he who speaks the truth. This truth will free you to seek for the Living God in the Spirit and to truly KNOW GOD instead of just knowing ABOUT HIM. The GOSPEL is NOT written with ink, nor on tablets of stone, but on our hearts by the Spirit of the Living God. The gentiles who have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, then they are a law unto themselves. Under the New Covenant we are to be led by the Holy Spirit, not the bible. I was searching for truth when Jesus told me, "The bible is an idol" which completely changed my direction. After that I only sought for Him in the Spirit and He has taught me many things on life's journey. The most important of which is that He died so we could be regenerated by the Holy Spirit into sons and daughters of God. The gospel is simple, repent from living after the flesh, ask Jesus to fill you with the Holy Spirit and then be led and controlled by Him through the Spirit. The bible is only history and has absolutely no authority from God to control us, the outward law was under the old covenant. Jesus died to redeem us from the curse of the written law because we were unable to keep it. Have a great journey through life with the Living Christ guiding you. When Jesus words are written down and Satan is using them, then the bible becomes the word of Satan. Constantine (1st) beast compiled 50 bibles, legalized Christianity and set up the false prophet (pope). King James (2nd) beast, born 6/1566, 6th of Scotland, authorized a bible in 1611 that now has 66 books to control people with, an image of God's word they make to speak (the bible says). By having faith in the bible which has been made into an idol, they break the new covenant of having faith in the Living Christ through the Holy Spirit, who is the true word of God.
