One of my favorite parts of this game is that the pawns learn about monsters, quests, and areas as they experience them. This happens both when you play and when other players "rent" them out. FAVORITE GAME OF ALL TIME! And before Dragon's Dogma, I hated fantasy games... only played WWII shooters and strategy games. Yes, the story and world were abbreviated by Capcom in an effort to push the game to market, but so many elements and systems were present to make the magic, combat, and exploration AMAZING (and IMHO the art direction is wonderful). After 4 playthroughs I'm still finding elements and systems I hadn't known about. And those pawns... I love the chatter and their abilities (AI); it makes an SP game feel alive and not a solitary experience. Great stuff!

One tip for newbies, don't rush to Gran Soren (even though it gives you an early quest to protect a caravan to Gran Soren which you can just do when you are actually ready to head there). I have a soft spot for Dragon's Dogma, but it always felt like a game with a lot of interesting ideas that were overall poorly developed. Like your character's height and weight playing into pressure plate puzzles or holes you can shimmy through... but those were so rare as to be largely irrelevant. Or how it impacted stamina and carry limits, which wasn't well explained by the game. Having to plan out your build well in advance and swapping classes to ensure specific stat gains is something I loathed, because it meant either playing the game with a guide open the whole time or getting to end game only to find out your character is underpowered. The ability to climb large monsters and damage specific parts of them was the coolest aspect of the game to me, but suffered from some jank that detracted from the mechanic's potential. Just getting the game to let me grab onto the chimera already was so tedious. All in all, it's not a bad game, it's just that it could use improvement in a lot of areas. It's a shame more games didn't take those ideas and improve on them. (Well, there is always Monster Hunter for jumping on a monster's back and cutting parts off it, but that has its own foibles to deal with.)

When this game came out, I tried so hard to get others to play it, with mixed but equally negative results. The gamers I talked to either dismissed the game as a "cheap Skyrim knock-off" or they tried it, played for only an hour and gave up, saying the game was "trash." Also, it should be noted that the original game (missing Bitterblack Isle) featured two unique armor sets that were inspired by the Anime Berserk, but were taken out with the release of the Dark Arisen expansion because Capcom was too cheap to pay the Berserk license fee. The armor sets were that of Guts and another cool looking set. I wish Capcom would have included them in the remaster, but nope.

The game has Cycle as a theme, both in lore and somewhat also in gameplay. It doesn't expect you to find and complete everything in a single playthrough If you missed a quest in this cycle, try again in the next And as you complete more cycles and find more things previously missed, it will broaden your perspective about the game's world I view the story as some sort of interactive mythology. It's not a big narrative adventure, but more of a collection of vignettes of the game's lore, Some of side quests gives you more context about what happened in the main questline, While others only makes sense if you complete the game at least once. At least that's what I remember, it's been a while. Currently, I'm playing it again on Steam, but haven't got that far yet

Most satisfying magic system I've seen so far. Magic being strong in game isn't something new but rarely they "feel" satisfying or really powerful, just big number from afar and that's it. Conjure an earthquake in DD and you will see enemies at the epicenter getting blasted sky high while the others lose their footing because of the power, the stones falling and crushing others. Tornadoes will actually pull everything in, you see trees suffering the effect from the pull, the environment being affected by it, small/human enemies unable to resist, being flung everywhere and cracking their backs on the fall when the spell finally ends while big ones stumble around unable to maintain proper footing. Everything is crazy satisfying to see. And I probably don't need to comment on what happens when you cast a meteor shower.

My biggest critique on it is the love relation it was quite common to Asalam (whom you change vocations with) was chosen by the Dragon and he was lost. I played the original game alot when i discovered there was the Dark Arisen avaliable, so i got it too, as a reward i got some itens and a infinite ferrystone. Well, Dragon's dogma combat system is one of the best around, masterworks all you can't go wrong, with it.

i did a full playthrough on my stream account (wont self promote here), and one memorable thing was a pawn named Quintus who despite falling back in level still held strong, i had him for 3/4ths of my playthrough when unfortunately, gravity was his undoing. I left the area unknowing he fell until i looked back on stream. May Quintus rest in the piece.

Its very true that the game puts off most players in the early hours. I Bought Dragons Dogma 11 years ago, and just played a few hours before forgetting all about it. Bought Dragons Dogma: Dark Arisen för like 5 bucks last year and played the whole game. Now im a big fan and so excited about Dragons Dogma 2

On my first play threw of it currently. The combat system is really good, if this game and skyrim had a baby it would be so much fun

The biggest flaw of the game is the lack of multiple save functions. I want to make several Arisens not being limited to just 1. Hope the next game fixes that

they didnt do it cause there wasn't a need to considering you die you start over again.. the whole concept of the game is that you are Hero who turns into dragon and is forever stuck in that loop, reasons why you can change your hero after ever run through and cahnge into any vocation at any time what are you gonna do on another saved filed?

This came out RIGHT after Skyrim, so I doubt Dragon's Dogma took inspiration from Skyrim. I'm surprised you never mentioned climbing on monsters. That's one of the biggest additions to the combat. Just about all other games do not have this mechanic. And even fewer allow you to maneuver while climbing so freely. Pawns also learn and grow, not only from yourself, but from other players. Other players will hire your pawn, and your pawn will learn of quest lines that you haven't been through yet. And they will tell you where to go or what to do from what they've seen. Or, they'll tell other players how to do things. The pawns also learn how they should fight from watching you. It's a bit annoying, but it's an interesting mechanic. If you pick up items during combat, your pawn will pick up items during combat. If you focus on fighting the largest creature, your pawn will as well. And you can change the way they act manually, but it can be hard to understand. THE WIND IS PUSHING ME!

The point i remember most after about 10 years not playing it is that Dragons Dogma is the only action RPG with actually helpful NPC companions. In any other RPG the companions are either canon fodder or simply overpowered and did all by themselves. In this game they put a lot of work into teamplay with the ai and it works exceptionally well. Of course not flawless, but the companions do what you tell them to do, communicate what they expect you to do or how they can help you.

It really isn't. If it was, so many people wouldn't bounce off it so hard. It's an absolutely outstanding niche game, and everyone who enjoys it knows exactly how good it is. It's held in exactly the regard it should be lol

The Pawn system back then for DD was revolutionary🔥🔥 It’s what really made the game unique and worth the experience. After awhile you tend to grind more and more just to “perfect” your Pond. But what really makes them an asset in battle are their “Inclinations.” It’s some what of a complex system which predetermines how they respond in battle. At first if you’re wondering why your main Pond or hired Ponds are running around with like a headless chicken, is because their inclination is all wack. There’s a method to change their behavior, but it takes a time and experimentation. Of course there’s no guarantee they’ll be the perfect Pond. Ponds in DD run by a script they must follow. But for the most part a well trained Pond with the right set of skills will benefit from one to another (inclinations)

I am the only one that love the Story?. After playing the game and beating the final boss, you start a new game and you beat the game again, and what do you see?. Your first character as the final boss, that was an amazing moment for me

If it wasn't for the awful level design, repetitive battles, lack of things to do, and garbage story telling worse than anything Bethesda has done and you need wiki guide walkthroughs to figure out what to do, where to go, who to talk to. Says a lot about how flawed this game was. There's more to complain about but those are some standouts to me. I'm looking forward to DD2. I just wanted an improved DD1 and it looks like it'll deliver on that.

Dragon's Dogma story telling makes the worst questline in Skyrim look like it was written by Tolkien in comparison.

I didn't play this until 2019, damn I missed out years of fun. Absolutely love this game, it's like a combination of Shadow of the colossus, a hack n slash and Rpg. Yes it's rough around the edges but it's certainly very underrated. I can't wait for DD2 to come out, already pre-ordered it on PC. I highly recommend all try this. There are some annoying things about it such as even when you respec you can't change your stats from what you got while levelling and some builds really are cookie cutter, some build make the last boss a joke and others struggle but overall it's superb and you can buy it for a few quid!

It will. Monster Hunter games used to be niche, and Capcom was flying under the radar until Monster Hunter World got mainstream. Dragons Dogma 2 will be launch and alot of people will be seeing this.

Hey Mitch, take a look at the new game, Svarog's Dream, it's a one dev's work indie aRPG, with the vibes of the elder scrolls, a bit of diablo 4, quite a nice story, very good game. The dev has launched a lot of updates and it shows the love in making the game. Certainly worth a look =)
