Something about this makes me want to unpack it with a film class discussion. My first thought upon watching was that this film seems to go against that often-told notion that "you don't need a super expensive camera to make great films" because, well, does this film not look super stunning because the camera and lenses and editing software which Mumbo has bought all capture a scene with a certain beautiful look? Visual quality and fidelity which he has no doubt poured thousands of pounds into obtaining? This film certainly would not look the same if I had taken the same shots on my £300 DSLR. But then I thought that, perhaps, there's more to this. Sure the gear IS super high-quality. But there are elements of skill at work here too. Mumbo is a skilled camera operator and knows how best to use his equipment settings to best capture the scene. He knows how to edit and grade his footage with finesse and subtlety. He knows how to utilize the rule of thirds, silhouettes, or depth of field to create an interesting scene even if it's just a flower or a copse of trees. The sound design is minimal but intentional, binding the whole thing together with the nostalgic music of birdsong. It's a very complete piece for an unplanned film. But finally, and funnily, this is only my opinion. And like with any art I could be applying so much to something with the artist actually gave little thought to. But this is why art is interesting, because of the discussion. And because of what you can create on a whim.
