It's bc it can happen. I think I enjoy the realistic story lines more than the non-realistic. And most people do bc anything that says based on a true story sells better. So, anything that could be true also sells better. But, this one was that reminder that those kinds of people do exist. People who murder for no reason. Just bc they feel like it. That is what's scary.

That covers The Exorcist, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Jaws, The Omen, Phantasm, Alien, The Shining, The Thing, Halloween, Carrie, Suspiria, Dawn of the Dead, Evil Dead, Poltergeist, Friday the 13th, Cannibal Holocaust, An American Werewolf in London... the list goes on and on.

For me, the Strangers loses its realism scare factor by having the villains mess around for hours (putting on vinyls, spreading flower pedals, writing on the walls), come without any weapons on hand, and pass on a lot of opportunities to easily kill or subdue the couple until the end. They're just kinda dumb and as a result the move doesn't logically progress as escalate as a story should

Honestly it's for this reason that I can't really settle on a favorite horror era; I love the classic slashers that came out in the 70s and 80s, but the way horror is being approached in a very psychological way recently, it always seems to make for an interesting watch, whether the movie is even good or not

@Raymond Douglas I think CGI is on the way out these days. You still see it here and there, but producers are no longer chomping at the bit to have featured monsters in full CG like they were in the 2000s and 2010s. One thing going for (what does this count as, the 10s? Or are we defacto 20s now? whatever) the current crop of horror is this desire to embrace old ways of doing things, be it setting films in certain periods, dredging up long-dormant subgenres, or remixing classic aesthetics in a new way. There's a lot more creativity and much less fear of the past than there used to be.

While I do agree that the remake is pretty much trash and that it was created and changed established lore DESPITE the original creator's wishes (which is a shitty thing to do just to make some quick bucks), an opinion is an opinion. I do agree, though, that there was no reason to really reboot the series, and the remake was pretty much absent of horror or tense scenes and was made just to throw another subpar horror movie against the wall, see if it sticks, and make some fat stacks of cash on the side. I hate the movie just on principle and the process of it being made, but the final product was maybe a 4 or 5 on a scale of 10. Felt like a Netflix original reboot of the series with great actors, but no soul.

@@omarxperez Absolutely false. The 90's did hurt horror a bit... and horror, essentially, is dead today. But it utterly thrived in the 80's. It didn't even slow down. 1985 = _The Return of the Living Dead, Re-Animator, Phenomena, Fright Night, Silver Bullet, Day of the Dead_ (and I have plenty of issues with this movie but it did a lot right), and _The Stuff_ (silly but astutely aware of the times). 1986 = _Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, The Fly, The Hitcher, From Beyond, Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2, Night of the Creeps, Psycho III_ (it's trashy and strange but one of the most interesting genre 'love letter' movies I've ever seen), and the director's cut of _Little Shop of Horrors_ (the last 25 minutes of the original director's cut solidify this as perhaps the greatest horror film of the entire decade) 1987 = _Hellraiser, Opera, Bad Taste, Evil Dead II, Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors_ (a fresh and unique take on the mythos of Freddy and the nightmare world/s), _Stagefright, Anguish, Island of the Alive, Slumber Party Massacre II_ (the only good SPM movie), _The Lost Boys, Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II, The Video Dead, Dolls_ (it has flaws but its strengths outweigh its weaknesses), _From a Whisper to a Scream_ (some of the most intelligent, shocking, confrontational writing of any 80's horror film = this needs to be more widely seen, now) 1988 = This year is the year of stepping outside the box. The best horror films of this year are all horror-comedies. _Killer Klowns from Outer Space_ is one of the decade's unsung masterpieces. I think people get lost in the gimmickry, there's more to it. _The Lair of the White Worm, Brain Damage, Rabid Grannies_ (the uncut version is a stab right in the gut, it's so campy for so long that when the gore comes in / it has some of the most shocking gore scenes I've ever witnessed), _Waxwork, Critters 2_ (the only 'great' _Critters_ movie), _Child's Play_ (it took me awhile to see the good in this one but it's there), _The Serpent and the Rainbow_ (the only stone sober horror film of this year), _Fright Night Part 2, Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master_ (heady) 1989 = admittedly a weak year overall but it did have _I, Madman_ (probably the most underseen great horror film of the decade), the misunderstood _Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan,_ the not at all misunderstood _Pet Sematary_ (ultra wonky but... it works), _Bud the Chud_ (hurt more by virtue of fact it was attached unwisely to the original _C.H.U.D._ / it shouldn't have been), _Halloween 5_ (don't ask, I'll never be able to explain it), _Warlock_ (underrated, sorry), and... tragically: the best horror film of the year and easily one of the greatest horror films of all-time is crashed by the fact the director molested one of the cast members and for that reason, I tell everyone not to watch the film. You can tell the kid is really not doing okay in his life. The director preyed on the kid **while** they shot the movie. Thankfully, the film has never showed up on streaming or Blu-Ray. But I saw it again a few years ago: it's a masterpiece. I hate that it is, it'd be easier if it weren't. 1990 is an unconventional year but if you really appreciate horror, you'll appreciate _Hardware,_ nobody need to be told to appreciate _Tremors, Misery, Exorcist III,_ I'm one of the few I guess who calls _Troll 2_ a great film but I think it is, _Def by Temptation_ is very well made if also very confusing..., if people think Romero's half of _Two Evil Eyes_ is not great they sure can't complain about Argento's! _There's Nothing Out There_ has an annoying central character, 'Mike' but it's a really fun, satisfying, atmospheric little meta gem. There's no defending 1991, it's a MESS. 1993 is worse. But we did get _Silence of the Lambs, The People Under the Stairs,_ and _Mom_ which is a very strong sleeper horror film despite weird implications with the son and the mother. Also worth a watch: _The Borrower_ and _Dolly Dearest._ 1992 more than makes up for the deficiencies of '93 and '91. _Dead Alive / Braindead, Candyman, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Innocent Blood, Dr. Giggles_ = 5 incredibly strong horror films! And then there are the sleepers: _Sleepwalkers_ (literally, ha ha) and _Dust Devil_ (seriously needs a Blu-Ray). (Though I've heard a release was canceled after it was discovered the director - yep, another one - had allegations against him). 1994 isn't great but it gave us _Cemetery Man_ which is amazing, and _Leprechaun 2_ which is even more fun than the first. Also, most people are really stuck on Carpenter's _In the Mouth of Madness._ I think it's just alright but it's worth seeing, obviously. 1995 and '96 are both disaster years, but we did get _Scream,_ one of the greatest horror films ever made. 1997 has some really strong sleeper gems: _Cube, Snow White: A Tale of Terror,_ and _Uncle Sam._ All of which are overdue for reappraisal. Also: _Bugged!_ is very fun. All black cast, black director. 1998 is another year for re-consideration: _Halloween H20_ holds up remarkably well, _Ringu_ and _Bio Zombie_ are excellent Asian horror films, _Bride of Chucky_ and _Urban Legend_ are fun, savvy, damn clever meta horror. Then 1999 really stuns on re-consideration: _Audition_ is the best horror film of the decade. It took me awhile to stop hating it but _Blair Witch Project_ is very good. _Ravenous_ is excellent. _Gemini_ = another under seen / under appreciated Asian horror gem. I need to rewatch _Sleepy Hollow_ but I've always liked it. _Stigmata_ is over the top but a strong watch. And I don't know why everyone isn't head over heels about _The Ninth Gate_ but I really, really liked it.

While not my favorite decade, if I really even have one, the 60's is an underappreciated decade for horror. We had Rosemary's Baby, Repulsion, The Innocents, Night of the Living Dead, two of Hitchcock's most iconic horror movies (The Birds and Psycho), and all those Vincent Price Poe interpretations, which, while not actually scary, are disturbing and interesting (The Oblong Box being the most disturbing, forgotten and underrated, imo). The 60's is the spawning decade of several horror subgenre; the slasher film, psychological horror, satanic horror, supernatural, and the zombies. While examples of these subgenre may have appeared in earlier decades, the tone of these 60's persists to this day. The 60's is when cinema came of age. Closing comment, "The Innocents" is one of the most beautiful haunted house films ever made, imo. It is just gorgeous. One of my all-time favorite movies of any genre.

The Village is great. It's haunting, beautiful and the acting is amazing. I personally don't think genre matters, it's the end product. Slasher is my favourite subgenre of horror. There are great and bad films in all genres. Hellraiser is flat out bad. It isn't just you, people are blinded by nostalgia. It's stupid, the acting is atrocious and the story is laughable. I'm going to say late 90's to late 2000's is the best for me. A little before your favourite, but similar. Scream is my favourite movie. Halloween is also my favourite Rob Zombie film and the second best movie in the entire franchise. It's just a really interesting and gritty take. It's a bit much at times, but I love it. Disagree about Child's Play, but they're the best two. The straight to DVD movies are pretty good too. Blair Witch is an odd one. It has some incredible ideas and the ending is great, it has less likeable leads than the original. Rings sucked. The Ring is one of the best horror movies of the last decade but this movie is a joke. YES! THE R RATING THING IS STUPID. My favourite horror movies (Scream and Halloween) are R, but they're not the best to me because of gore. They're the best because they're brilliantly told, entertaining movies with incredible scripts, acting and directing.

@sarkaztik3228 4 жыл бұрын
@@MrParkerman6 What are you even talking about? It is a fact that there is no absolute "best" decade for horror and only preferences, ergo you are incorrect, and your post alone shows that you are by nostalgia. While there are more badly-written horror movies than good in the last 20 years, nearly all horror movies from the 80s and 90s were either badly written or copied from a book thus not even an original creation. Hell, the ratio might have been even worse People on average don't watch horror movies for how well-written they were, otherwise mindless slasher movies from the 80s and 90s wouldn't be some of the most popular horror movies to date (the Friday the 13th series and Texas Chainsaw Massacre, for example are prime examples of braindead writing, but that doesn't stop them from being thoroughly enjoyed by many). There's nothing wrong with that as horror movies don't necessarily need good writing to work. Casting has been bad in every decade, even taking a look at film in general, you would notice that. These days the same bad actors are used in the same horrible Netflix-exclusive horror movies to make a quick buck, yes, but many cult hits had horrible actors and actresses as well. The biggest issues with most horror movies these days are that they're all about demons, ghosts, or possession (all boring and cookie cutter nonsense), bad remakes, or trying too hard to fit in with "modern day habits and technology" (aka, the horrid "Unfriended" and movies of that ilk). Also far too much bad-looking CG. We've come so far and movies are still making horror movies with pitiful looking CG. I personally (AND SUBJECTIVELY) prefer the 80s and 90s the most because of the vast use of practical effects and the aura of cheese that comes from the difference in video quality from the 80s to now. Most bad movies these days aren't as fun to watch as bad movies from the 80s, in my opinion, and it's very rare for movies to be made with care and nice looking practical effect.

I remember watching The Village on cinemas when it came out and absolutely hating it because it was advertised as an horror movie and I felt so cheated... but as time passed I kept thinking fondly about the movie until I gave in and rewatched it last year or so, turns out I love it now! Also my best era of horror is the early 00s! We’re around the same age so I’m pretty sure it’s for the same reasons haha

early 2000's horror films are amazing. especially the ones where it is something that could happen, and has happened to people. tcm, house of wax, hills have eyes, hostel, the hannibal series (half the series came out in the early 2000s it's valid). they're all possible, and as someone who's doubly a serial killer fanatic, it's kind of like watching a real serial killer, massacre, etc. crime scene happen.

Childsplay 2 is definitely my favorite out of the franchise, but it depends on what you like. If you want more cheesy/campy fun horror then the OG trilogy are definitely the best, but if you enjoy a bit of comedy mixed in Bride and Seed are what I’d recommend. (Though seed is..... something. 😂) If you want less cheese and just straight up horror Curse and Cult are awesome too. I thought cult was good, but Curse was great. 🔪❤️

1980’s is the golden years of horror. I’d say 2017 to 2019 horror has gotten better in the mainstream world and even the less know ones. However nothing can touch 80’s horror movies in my opinion. Also I am very curious in why you don’t believe in the paranormal? I could share my experiences with you. If you don’t believe because nothing has happened to you in that vein I can understand, but either way I’d love to hear your side.

why you don’t believe in the paranormal - I obviously cannot speak for her but its largely because pretty much anyone involved with "hauntings" etc are either woefully ignorant of science or have mental issues or a combo of both

@@atomiccritter6492 this argument although decent is false. I’ve had many paranormal experiences as well as everyone on my Mom’s side of the family. I’ve seen a demon face to face. I was borderline close to exorcism when I was just 8 years old. The paranormal is very tangible. I can understand when people don’t believe if they haven’t experience it for themselves.

I love all of those east asian horror movies like Ju On, White Ghost/Black ghost, ring-u, Noroi, Dark Water, and all their American remakes that came out in the late 90s/early 2000s. The Ring was also one of the first horror movies I ever saw and one of my all time favorites. The ghosts have such a haunting look, and I always loved the grey, misty atmosphere and shots of rainy cities and small apartments. The films have such a melancholy, quiet tone with a creeping uneasy undercurrent.

I think The Village suffered from really bad marketing, because even when people say they hated it a lot of them will still say they liked everything up to the last 20 minutes or so. I do think it’s overall a strong film but I didn’t care for how The Twist is revealed.

re: hellraiser, I hated the first film because I didn't know what I was getting into, but I just was so curious I picked up the original book 'The Hellbound Heart' (yep Hellraiser is a book adaptation). and the book is just so much better! Clive is a decent author, but an awful director (he directed the first film) the book better explains the more horror parts and doesn't have the 80's cheesiness (just read where Kirsty meets pinhead, and it's just a conversation, none of the hallway shit in the film, and I feel like it's more effective). So I def recommend the book if the film wasn't your thing (it's a tiny book.) Also Hellraiser did suffer because they really wanted a new slasher icon, but Hellraiser really isn't meant to be a tradional slasher.

Clive Barker is actually one of my favorite authors. I think he's a great writer (better than a lot of other popular horror writers) and a fantastic artist also. It's unfortunate that a lot of people are only familiar with the film adaptations of his work because most of the films aren't very good. Perfect example is Cabal; I love the novella but the movie Nightbreed based on it, also directed by Barker, is super cheesy. I do like the first Hellraiser movie though despite its flaws.

I'm a HUGE Child's Play/Chucky fan! I reccomend Bride of Chucky, Seed of Chucky, and Cult of Chucky. Those are my personal faves (although I will continuously rewatch Child's 1-3 no issue). Jennifer Tilly really does Bride and Seed some heavy justice and the ending to Cult was really interesting for me. One reason I adore the Child's play/Chucky franchise is how casually they slip in LGBTQ representation. Like one example is that Chucky's kid is gender fluid.
