I totally respect your rant about disturbing horror! I agree it can go both ways, and I’m sure I’ve contributed to gatekeeping the other way especially for movies I personally can’t wrap my head around ANYONE enjoying (I’m thinking it’s the same one you won’t mention 😉) but everyone is entitled to like what they like at the end of the day and not be shat on or judged for it! oh also completely agree with your last opinion, one of my favorite viewing experiences was watching Saint Maud on my phone with headphones it was great and really prevented me from scrolling on my phone during the slower parts 😬

Yes to be honest a lot of the harassment I've gotten on this topic has been in your comment sections. Not saying it's your fault but you know, like minded people tend to group up with other like minded people. I get insulted because other people can't understand that I can enjoy a certain movie and not be insane.

My unpopular horror opinion is that I unironically love The Happening. I also agree about not seeing every movie at a theatre. I rarely go to the movies anymore unless it's something I'm dying to see because it's usually not worth the price. If a movie is truly good, you can watch it on a 13 inch TV and still enjoy it.

hey! you may not remember me, but i stitched a tiktok of yours a long time ago where we both talked about disturbing movies, and it ended up gaining over half a million views. what you said about reverse gatekeeping is totally true, as these very young horror movie fans were attacking me in the comments to the point where i had to delete my account. it was really depressing to see young fans of horror tear each other apart like that.

Regarding the problem of the gatekeeping, I absolutely agree. I've been harrassed and called a psycho myself for liking the more disturbing and gory movies. And I also heard from female friends of mine that they sometimes get gatekept by men in the horror community, simply because of their gender, which honestly make me sicker than any of the movies ever could. #HorrorIsForEveryone

As I get older I am surprised how few people had parents teach them not to give af about other people's opinions about them or to even grasp the definition of an opinion. Beyond the simple lesson of "sticks n stones", it's so bizarre to me how many people get so bothered by other people that I have to think it's in their upbringing. I know I had great parents but considering how many people hate their parents it leads me to believe that so many simple life lessons got lost in that emotional block & distrust so many people had with people in their own families or childhood, including most apparently parent issues. The way so many people feel the need to almost apologize ahead of giving their opinions is sad, depressing and is creating so many muted personalities based on that seemingly fear of social feedback. I hope one day you feel like you don't need to remind people these are your opinions on your own channel and don't have those viewers who need babysitting. You are my favorite person to listen to talk about horror since Elvira even if at times I don't agree with your takes. I am very impressed how well you can talk about movies without spoilers unlike so many movie channel commenters. That alone should earn you the utmost respect. Take care Emma.

I find that Gatekeeping happens in waves - as kids age up into being fans of a genre, they take the baggage of highschool cliques with them, and as those same people become adults, they eventually get over it (on average) and become more permissive about letting in outsiders (or "outsiders" from their point of view), then as they get even older, their personal opinions calcify and become more strict and exclusive, turning them into gatekeepers again. That's also why it's possible to encounter situations like you describe, where two groups of gatekeepers at odds with eachother end up attacking you from both directions

TikTok can honestly be one of the most vapid echo chambers, I wouldn’t let their comments get you down. Most of it is teens using the guise of social justice to go around harassing people and feeling like they’re somehow making the world a better place while doing it. In a few week’s time they’ll have forgotten all about their crusade against disturbing media and will be on to some new bullyin- uh, I mean, _educating_ quest.

Oh mood. It’s kind of a thing not only on tiktok, but among younger teens in general. They feel like they have to be Unproblematic and Completely Pure at all times, and if you disagree you get harassed... which is ironically pretty problematic in itself. But it’s toootally fine if the person they’re bullying is a heathen who goes against the hivemind. God that sounds so dramatic, but it really be like that.

Thank you! I have often felt the same way. Let people like what they like and stop judging. I watch some pretty extreme stuff, but I draw the line at stuff like The Guinea Pig films and August Underground. I'm called a wimp and a poser. Also: extreme gore or violence is not the only way a film can push boundaries. Remember how divisive Hereditary and It Comes At Night were? Those films put families through extreme emotional situations in a way which isn't interesting for some but can be nerve-shreddingly horrifying for others. Meanwhile I watched Gaspar Noe's Climax and was like "well that was pretty disturbing I guess but it was an interesting art piece"

Thank you for putting this out there, very good points re: Gatekeeping going the other way with folks that enjoy disturbing movies! I guess to contribute one of my unpopular opinions, I really think we need to be redefining our metrics for cinematic success. "Opening Box Office Weekend" just doesn't cut it anymore. Aside from a handful of blockbusters per year, this metric was misleading even prior to Covid with theaters suffering and failed to take into account the total lifespan of a film, from marketing to release to home viewing. I don't know what the film industry will look like in 5-10 years, but it seems clear that there needs to be some industry mentality shifting, because the old way just isn't viable any longer.

I really enjoy The Guest, I think it is meant to be cheesy. Adam Wingard's style I feel is always blurring lines between "is this funny or really messed up" and I think they're both. I've given my unpopulars before, so not this time. Gatekeeping. Ever go to one of those buffet restaurants? You can have as much or as little as you like, and they offer all kinds of dishes. _You eat what you like._ No one, _no one_ , ever questions your street cred as a diner for not taking some of absolutely everything, and loving it. If they did, they would be laughed out of the building as delusional. Why do we allow it when it comes to taste in cinema? Does being a "true fan" mean that one cannot have personal tastes, likes and dislikes? That is essentially what the gatekeepers are arguing, like a bad parent at the dinner table: 'You'll eat it and you'll like it.' Hey, Emma, there are kids in Africa who don't get to watch horror! I watch the movies that strike a chord with me. they don't even have to be good movies, they just need to fire me up in some way, touch off a spark. I don't watch to be torn down but to be lit up. Amuse me, scare me, appeal to my imagination. If you general 'you', not Emma) are someone who finds it enriching to view films as an endurance test, more power to you: you do you. I mightily regret non-horror choices like Requiem for a Dream, and slapping a horror veneer on the same emotional brutality doesn't make a film any more appealing. And...I'm 55 years old now, been watching horror of every era for at least 50 of 'em. Horror cred? Mine's unassailable. And I''m sayin' right now, being a horror fan does not mean you have to watch the movies you don't like, let alone the ones that erode your soul. It's not a goddamn endurance contest. If you hate feel-bad cinema, avoid it and tell the unlearned gatekeeper punks to go to hell, they can't touch your cred. ************** One of my best horror viewing experiences was at home, on what would now be considered a small TV. Hell, it was the era of pan&scan, plus on an American network (so it was censored and shot through with ads). Phantasm, CBS Late Night, American network premiere, 12:35 in the morning. It was preceded by an episode of Kolchak: The Night Stalker ("The Zombie"). My first time seeing Phantasm. All the light out in the house, me the one up, sitting with my back turned to a spacious living room, the front door next to me creaking now and then as the house settled. It's all about context, kids! Just ask the people who discovered Videodrome in the era of VHS, there was an extra bit of magic to it. AHS: Freak Show, Asylum, and Hotel in no special order. An aside, I caught Candyman last week and thoroughly loved it. The third act is choppy, with some turns that needed some character development to support them... but for its subtexts, beauty, poetry and even the scares, it's one of the best I've seen this year. Which, admittedly, means nothing as I've seen so little. But still.

Love your videos. Keep it up! Lots of love from a Belgian fan! Btw: my ideal way to watch a movie is the sound has to be all the way up. Every light needs to be out and every curtain must be closed but most important of all. Everyone needs to SHUT THE FRONT DOOR! Its movie time. Not talky time.

Good video, Emma. And I totally agree with you on Gatekeeping. People are exactly the kind and degree of horror fan as suits them to be. You like old Universal horrors? Cool. Enjoy. You like Gothics? Cool. Enjoy. You like the modern mainstream films, like James Wan, etc? Cool. Enjoy. Like what you like, but remember; everyone else has as much of a right to their opinions and preferences as you do. And there is no such thing as a "better" horror fan, or a "worse" horror fan. Not agreeing with someone's taste is one thing; thinking badly of them for having a different opinion is just snobbery. And as for people who criticise how people watch films; well, they need to remember that people have different lifestyles and other needs that may affect how they can access movies. Not to mention the cost. Not everyone can afford multiple cinema tickets per week; or they might not have the money or storage space for a large Blu-ray collection, so streaming may be their only option, for example.

I agree that Freak Show is one of the better AHS seasons. Maybe got a little long by the end but it had everything in the right place. And while I personally would prefer a cinema for something I really want to see, most of the movies I've watched for the first time have been on video and I'm okay with that, especially nowadays. Streaming can be good too, if you have access and your internet doesn't crap out during the film. Nobody sees eye to eye on everything, but that doesn't mean people can't be civilized.

I've been called disgusting, a psychopath, evil, an edgy child just trying to get attention etc etc, multiple times when I've brought up the topic of me enjoying disturbing films. People go crazy at me and physically can not understand that some people are level headed enough that they can watch f*cked up stuff like that and just not be phased by it, it's just entertainment and although it may be too hard for most to watch.. I enjoy it.. And I'm sick of people calling me and edge lord and a psychopath just because I appreciate them. I have never found my personal threshold, Never once found a film that was too much for me, sure some make me uncomfortable but never to the point that I want to turn it off... and whenever that comes up in online conversations I get harassed. Some people are just not as easily disturbed as others, but a lot can't accept that unfortunately.

I don't like going to the cinema, but it's because I ALWAYS get headaches. I'm very sensitive to loud sounds, so even non-horror is too loud for me. I like being able to control the volume. I don't even wear headphones... they ALSO give me headaches. I wish I was kidding. Tbh, I'm also a paranoid germaphobe haha, so going out is uncomfortable for me. It's okay with me if people think I'm missing out, and I probably am, but I just don't want to suffer from yet another headache. I get enough of them as it is! Not to mention that not all horror films are even available in the cinema. I like watching foreign language horror films (I think some of the best horror is non English) and more extreme stuff, which you won't be able to find in the cinema for the most part. I think the way someone enjoys horror doesn't affect someone else's life at all, so they should just mind their own business lol. I agree on the disturbing movie/ extreme horror front. No one has to enjoy them, BUT it's totally okay to enjoy them. I really like Martyrs, Eden Lake, and Antichrist, but I get why others don't. You can watch only mainstream stuff and be a horror fan, only watch underground extreme stuff and be a horror fan, avoid certain kinds of film because it's too much and be a horror fan... at the end of the day, it's entertainment. You should like what you're doing. I don't think there's a criteria for being a horror fan.

My other unpopular opinion is that I actually like jump scares (as long as the movie doesn’t rely solely on them). I think that’s what first got me interested in horror, being the on the edge of my seat waiting for something to jump out at me or catch me off guard.

I first got into horror movies watching them at home on VHS. I rented I Know What You Did Last Summer from my local grocery store (really) at the age of 12 and loved it. Then I watched the original classic Halloween movies with my mother (a horror fan who wanted to make sure I wasn't getting the wrong messages from the films). I wouldn't be a horror fan today without having watched my first ones at home on tape.

I am so glad you mentioned gatekeeping the way we watch movies. I watch all movies on my phone, and while it's not ideal as long as the room is dark it works for me but I get grief about it all the time! I also want to mention that I have always loved disturbing/horror movies but I was not obsessed until I found your channel. I love your videos and value your opinion even when we don't agree! One of my unpopular opinions is that I do not like The VVitch.

Personally, I love horror but I find the cinema so overwhelming that end up switching off and not remembering what I've watched. Not to mention how pricey it is! 😅

Emma , you don't need to justify to anybody your taste in films . You're a great reviewer and i always value your opinion when i'm deciding what to watch . The fact that you like some films that are "out there" means that , sometimes we discover things that are off of our radar . This isnt just "extreme cinema" , it can also be non-horror films . Keep up the hard work and carry on doing things the way you think is best , because its served you well and resulted in an amazing channel .

My only issue with criticism is when it’s someone making someone feel bad for liking/not liking things. Honestly fully agree with you on so many things. I personally haven’t really had a Found Footage film I love, but I understand the appeal. I completely agree with you on Blair Witch. My sister and I saw in theaters. We both liked it and the finale was intense.😬 Also I think Freak Show is an underrated season of AHS, but the best season for me will always be season 1 aka Murder House. I can’t believe people are judging others for how they view films. In a movie theater is ideal, but you can still get just as much out of a film watching it at home. Honestly I hate gatekeeping of any kind in any community. Let people like what they like.

On the topic of viewing movies, I watched I am Legend on my laptop, in my bed in the complete darkness and other than seeing the first Cloverfield in theaters it was the best viewing experience I've ever had, I was so immersed that I felt alone and isolated and every other emotion that Will Smith's character felt. Great video by the way.

As far as how and where one watches movie, what does it matter? What did the gatekeepers expect when the theater were closed? Are we to avoid those movies that are video and streaming only? In the dark, with the lights on, headphones, no headphones, it doesn't matter. Love and let live.

Personally, your channel is one of the best horror content and reviews. You give us amazing movie recommendations. I love watching Disturbing/controversial films. It just fascinates me. I absolutely agree with the first one. People are like oh you like that disgusting/disturbing crap and I'm like...It's a movie...it's not real. People act like I enjoy watching snuff films. I've actually like tried to watch things where real things were being depicted and I just couldn't...makes me sick to my stomach just thinking about it so my brain knows the difference! One of MY unpopular opinions I would say is that jump scares don't bother me. People get so hung up on how jump scares are cheap or overly relied on or "ruin" a movie...and truth be told, it's never really bothered me. I'm usually unphased by horror movies so getting startled every once in a while is actually quite nice.

I've seen the same thing you were talking about with people saying you're terrible for liking the darker films in other areas as well, especially in the YA/Fiantasy/Romance Novels and Fanfiction spaces. There seems to be a movement coming around where people think that any sort of darkness or toxicity in fiction is going to affect people in real life, which is a mindset I thought we'd somewhat banished.

As far as the cinema being "the best" way to watch films, I think for some films that is true. It's wild that purity culture is even seeping into horror fandom. How can any one person attempt to set objective boundaries for which totally fictional scares are acceptable, and which aren't? The whole genre is about exploring fictional ideas and scenarios that you wouldn't want to experience in real life. Also? Thanks for your last opinion. That one really applies to ALL movies. I'm tired of reading movie reviews that suggest that you might as well not even bother watching a movie unless you watch it in the theater, as if that's the only "true" way to experience it. I hate movie theaters. I get severely overstimulated by the noise and the huge screen and the rancid popcorn smell, not to mention people who kick my chair or talk during the movie. The only "true" way for me to experience a movie is in my room, alone, where I feel safe, and where I can actual focus.

@@kirstyfairly4371 I’ve seen as many docuhorrors as any other horror hound has seen and the acting in this one is superb.
