Hey everyone. In this video, we install the new 8TB drives we shucked in the previous video, into our unRAID server.
This, hopefully without losing data.

Having to rely on third party plugins is one of the things I don’t like about unRaid but there is a plugin called unBalance that would be useful for this.

Hey Raul Sarmiento, thanks for watching. I get why you think that. Personally I think it's the best having all these plugins you can choose from. unBALANCE being one of them. I wasn't familiar with it but it turns out to be quite handy. Thanks for mentioning :)

Very informative video! Did you need to reconfigure your shares, Dockers, and VMs after you restructured your drives in your array?

Thank you for your videos. I noticed that you don’t use Krusader, I find it to be a very helpful tool for moving files. You might find it helpful, do you use a different tool for moving files

Hey James Struble, thanks for watching. That looks really useful. I will give it a go, thanks for sharing :). At the moment I mostly use the command line or FileZilla

Another great video - really enjoyed it ! Could you have attached the 8TB drive via USB and then transfered the data to it, then removed the 2x WD 2TB drives from the array, then changed parity drive? Also, could you lose one drive from your set up? When you came to change one of your 3TB drives you wouldnt have to disconnect a drive to be able to install the replacement drive.

Hey GreenZero, thanks for watching. I think you can assign the USB drives to the array. As for the parity, I removed the 3TB parity drive so I could install the new 8TB drive. At that point, I had no parity for the array. As Raul Sarmiento mentions I could have used unBALANCE to move the data around. With the USB drives attached and added to the array, this would have been easier because I had no spare slots. Then afterwards a new config with a new parity drive would have also got me to this point. Hehe, well it was still fun nevertheless and eventually, it worked out pretty well.

@@b00bytrap What do you think of the new HP Gen10 Plus ?

Well, not so thrilled tbh. I do like that is has a socketed cpu again but no extra SATA connection (for use with for example an SSD) is a deal breaker in my opinion. The iLO interface being optional I’m also not a big fan of. I’m still very happy I bought a Gen8 a few years ago.

Why do you use BTRFS for your cache drive? Wouldn't XFS be the better choice for cache?
@b00bytrap
@b00bytrap 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Walter Bishop, thanks for watching. Good question. When I installed the first caching SSD (a simple Kingfast) kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6vMeYyBf952gdU it automatically created a BTRFS. Now unlike some other people I haven't had a single problem with BTRFS on a caching SSD. A couple of months ago I replaced it with a Samsung 860 EVO 500GB and transferred the data over, still BTRFS. I'm also running my dockers from this SSD for over a year now without a single corruption.

If using hdds really should use z2 parity redundancy (makes this less a problem and protects from dual bit errors or 2 disks flat out failing) raid5/z1 been dead for over 5 years (disks are to big now and your using shucked drives on top of that)

A command like question (leads to probably basic knowledge but it seems to elude me each time)... so the source is /mnt/disk3/ and the destination /mnt/disk2 When it needs the / the destination also and what is the difference of using it in both the source , destination , both and none. What would be the results? Thank you PS Its critical question for me because when you use also the --delete option then great things of disaster can happen to the source

Hey ierosgr, thanks for watching. Leaving the trailing slash out of the source, will just create a new folder on the destination. A trailing slash at the end of the destination will create a folder if it is not there already. Therefore, we leave it out because that destination already exists (because it is a mount point to our hard drive). Example one (where we use the trailing slash after the source): root@R7UNRAID:/mnt/user/b00bytrap/test# tree . ├── disk1 └── disk3 ├── file.txt └── folder └── file2.txt 3 directories, 2 files root@R7UNRAID:/mnt/user/b00bytrap/test# rsync -avX disk3/ disk1 sending incremental file list ./ file.txt folder/ folder/file2.txt sent 235 bytes received 69 bytes 608.00 bytes/sec total size is 0 speedup is 0.00 root@R7UNRAID:/mnt/user/b00bytrap/test# tree . ├── disk1 │ ├── file.txt │ └── folder │ └── file2.txt └── disk3 ├── file.txt └── folder └── file2.txt 4 directories, 4 files root@R7UNRAID:/mnt/user/b00bytrap/test# Example 2 (where we leave the trailing slash out of the source): root@R7UNRAID:/mnt/user/b00bytrap/test# tree . ├── disk1 └── disk3 ├── file.txt └── folder └── file2.txt 3 directories, 2 files root@R7UNRAID:/mnt/user/b00bytrap/test# rsync -avX disk3 disk1 sending incremental file list disk3/ disk3/file.txt disk3/folder/ disk3/folder/file2.txt sent 245 bytes received 70 bytes 630.00 bytes/sec total size is 0 speedup is 0.00 root@R7UNRAID:/mnt/user/b00bytrap/test# tree . ├── disk1 │ └── disk3 │ ├── file.txt │ └── folder │ └── file2.txt └── disk3 ├── file.txt └── folder └── file2.txt 5 directories, 4 files root@R7UNRAID:/mnt/user/b00bytrap/test#

@@b00bytrap Thank you it was very thorough so there is not a unisex solution to let rsync decide-check if the destination folders/files exist and skip the creation of them else to create (else someone has to check each time if the tree is the same in destination and source which in cases of thousands of directories its impossible)

I give unRIAD a first try for my Backup Server. Actually I'm Using Windows with Drivepool and I also tried OMV with unionFS. I have seen a lot of video also all of yours. ;o) Due to migration I started with one 3TB drive copied all the data to it and afterwards I put in a second drive. The share can use both drives. Now I want to balance the used space between the drive. In Drivepool which I already using this is working automaticly. I searched a few days now for a solution but only found unbalance for in the unRAID Apps. I think that is not the solution for me. For Linux you can use union FS or mergerFS to merge all your drives to "one". With commandline tool your are able to balance the drives. Do you have any idea?
