I remember this game mostly for it's overwhelming atmosphere of loneliness and the fantastic music. There's not a single living human in this game, and everyone we find has already died. Reading the journals and log entries added so much depth to something as simple as a human corpse on the floor somewhere. The music has perfectly captured the awe and wonder of exploring a beautiful alien planet. I'm glad the Unreal Engine is forever carrying on the name of this beautiful game and keeps it on memory of the game industry workers and gamers alike. I need to replay Unreal once again...

Watching this I realise how much this game had an effect on my psyche. When you first get out of the prison ship and the music kicks in utterly blew me away in 1998 and watching it again it kind of did the same. Also weird is how much I remember of the actual game. I think I was playing it on the original Voodoo card although it might have been my Righteous Orchid 3D, can't remember now. Unbelievably atmospheric and not just for the time. Great game. Just looked it up and apparently those two video cards are one and the same. Don't remember it that way but hey its nearly a quarter of a century ago :)

kids and "PC gamers" of today will never grasp the immense greatness of that intro. They simply missed out on the absolute prime of PC gaming (late 90s to like mid 2000s)
@scrublord58863 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for this PT, I really enjoyed it. For those of you too young to remember the release of this game, there are some fun facts you should know. Some of the graphics seem ahead of their time, particularly the reflective floors. This is because Unreal WAS ahead of its time. So much so that it ended up in the discount bin upon release. Very few people had a computer that could play this game and virtually no one had a computer that could play it as it was meant to look. That's because Unreal wasn't meant to be played, at least not in 1998. The game you're seeing was more or less an advertisement to OTHER game developers to sell the Unreal engine. And this game revolutionized gaming, even if no one really played it in 1998. I know, I was in grad school at the time, bought the game and didn't actually play it for another two years. That's when my computer caught up with its requirements.
@Methos_1013 жыл бұрын
I had the privilege of playing this late 1998 because I had a brand new Riva TNT graphics card and... Unreal was included with it. Because of it I was then expecting Unreal Tournament the following year and it became one of my favorite games of all time, I even played it competitively on a clan.
@scrublord58863 жыл бұрын
@@Methos_101 I had a Riva TNT as well and this game didn't play for shit on my rig. I don't remember for sure, but I think I had a Pentium II 300 and I could watch the intro, which was mesmerizing, but killing a Skaarj seemed almost impossible because they were flying around the screen and my computer would start stuttering. Idk, it's over 20 years ago, so my memory might be fuzzy, but it seems like the Pentium IV in 2000 was when this game really started to shine.

I may be a zoomer who's grown accustomed to appreciating the cutting-edge graphics of RTX shaders and modern AAA games, but my jaw dropped at this gameplay demo. Honestly, even if a game is older than I am, that doesn't mean it's less visually stunning than something like BF2042 or Halo Infinite; it's the artstyle and how well presented a game looks that really sells the unreality of it all. The fact that 90's hardware could manage reflections, refraction, dynamic lighting, fog, bloom, high-res textures, and shadows is just nuts to me, but maybe I underestimate what one can do with less than a gigabyte of RAM and processors measured in Mhz.
