The way the lighting reacts dynamically is just brilliant. There's alot that goes into photorealism but the cornerstone of a convincing set is accurate lighting. This is definitely a leap in our ability to replicate realistic light behavior. Oh man I'm so excited for next gen games. Hellblade 2 is being made with this engine and the gameplay reveal looks unreal (pun intended).

I've always loved games that were able to showcase dynamic lighting abilities which also had an effect on gameplay. Horror and stealth games usually excelled at this aspect.

Yeah, I remember back in late 2005 when the 7th generation started and the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 were released. Those looked totally incomparable to everything that had come before. The 8th generation was nowhere near on the same level.

@Umbrella Corporation VR comes with such a massive performance penalty though. We need the "order of magnitude performance improvement" eye tracking & foveated rendering Oculus are working on, but that level of *p-e-r-f-e-c-t* eye tracking & extremely efficient rendering pipeline is a number of years off still, unfortunately.

making a realistic character is very hard, just look at Star Wars, it's easier to make a stylized character and say it's not realistic because it's stylized than to try to make it look realistic

Didn't the Matrix Tech Demo look and play like this? "Oh but that's not a full game" yeah who cares, the map is procedurally generated and bigger than GTA5's map. The literal purpose of the tech demo is to show what the engine can do, and it's clearly shown that a full game at that scale can run, play and look great.

Actaully, the youtube compression removes noise/smooths everything out.
This looks like a sci-fi fantasy version of Tomb Raider. The character even looks and sounds like Lara Croft a little bit. The graphics are pretty much photorealistic, and the lighting is fantastic.

When I see the sandstone environment in such detail, it makes me feel like I'm back in the slot canyons of southern Utah. I can almost feel the temperature changes from light to shadow and the dry air. I don't consider myself a big gamer and nowhere near a cg artist, but man that's beautiful.

This is so syncronistic... I went and re watched this after more than a year and I also caught that before I scrolled down and saw your comment. Maybe my brain saw it this time since I played around in the Matrix demo with triangle view and saw how they update with distance. This was probably a glitch cus it was a cutscene and is not limitation of the engine since I havent seen anything like it in the Matrix demo.

The main thing is that you don't have to worry about poly-count, their system will downgrade and create LOD for your meshes. (if it works as well as he says).
