The lightning engine is insanely realistic, I could only spot few parts where it didn't look like a movie anymore. But this demo is definitly far from 60fps, it was actually quite stuttery, looked more like 20fps ( might also be due to it being recorded). Still, with the PCs in the next few years this should run smoothly

I'd say that's pretty accurate soon as there seems to be a lot of things to upscale performance in this. It's good the application and engine can render at 60fps with intense graphics but there just isn't enough power in today's average gaming PC to run the same graphics on a higher scale such as Borderlands 2 or 'on the battleground' shooters etc etc. The engine could develop some features to depolymerize (I think that's the word (reduce polymers)) in objects that become further away, but the engine still has to update the objects in real time and this is a task. In further detail depolymerization will also cause some graphical bugs with polygons or polygon groups that have opacity and reflective properties, as the light reflected or projected would be projected from a less polygon count but may be closer to you than the actual object. That is an example of one of many impossible or extremely hard to optimize features about the graphical advances you may see as promising for Unreal Engine 4, so expect graphic cards and processor powerful enough to stream arrays of data from individual polygons in a large map or moving objects with skeletal features in the farther future, it's just simply not going to happen to games right now (sorry I'm a kill joy)

Both the XBox one and PlayStation 4 are perfectly capable of running this scene. The lighting is precomputed as are the reflection maps. Nothing fancy about the runtime components of this scene. The problem isn't the use of the console, but rather the amount of time it takes to bake the scene's lighting for full levels of most games. This is becoming less of a problem, though, and you will very soon see scenes in games with this level of lighting fidelity.
@user-md2iq9vb9z9 жыл бұрын
Don Smith alright well as it stands, both consoles are running laptop-tier specs. integrated graphics are never a good sign. luckily, they were both made by AMD, which will help a LOT with optimization for PC ports, it already has. but it will only get (much) worse, as these consoles last years and years and years before a new one with upgraded hardware comes out. so yea, for now it's fine. but how do you not see the measly hardware in those consoles running the exact same course as the ps3/360 did?
@daveywavey509 жыл бұрын
You need both consoles & PCs!! Consoles make programmers better because to improve with set hardware means better programming - PC programmers can just tell people to buy better equipment - you need both - PCs push hardware - consoles push software. Anyone who limits themselves to one path will only end up at one destination!

The camera movement is a disgrace, but I recognise overall it's something amazing.
@Sedilkin9 жыл бұрын
the camera movement does signify that it's rendered in-game (or whatever you'd call this) by extension that means that all this advanced lighting is rendered at real time. Yeah it's not professional camerawork, but it shows truly the power of it. If they'd used a real camera it could have been pre-rendered
@CrispingChicken9 жыл бұрын
The camera was to simply suggest that the game is consistently rendering at real-time. There doesn't need to be much advancement in the camera as the objective of the virtual world is to show off the Unreal Engine 4 (which it does if your not good at paying attention to details. These graphics simply wouldn't function on a larger scale map with objects that move and/or have skeletal structures). The camera is not the best but it's showing off dem fancy graphics can work as an actual game or related (which if your player hugs the walls it can do on a standard gaming PC) ;D

Harry Massey It's a model/shader display showroom... and honestly, it's not particularly impressive one at that. Give me the models and the textures, and i'll make a scene that's indistinguishable in Unity 5. It'd be doable in 4, but i wouldn't feel like programming shaders just to prove a point. As a game dev, you can see the pre-baked lighting, cheap cubemaps with transparent filter textures on top and faked reflections with blur shader occlusion a mile away. The cloth may look impressive to the everyday viewer, but the cloth physics and folding clearly aren't done in-engine, but whatever 3D modelling software they used for this. I expected there would be no motion to indicate cloth physics the second i saw the bed and curtains, and i was quite annoyed that i expected correctly. All in all, it's nothing but a beautiful facade, and tells nothing of the engine. I'd rather they display what the engine can actually do, other than "it can display textured models and it has shaders too".
@ghfsd786fa9 жыл бұрын
***** you know, ***** is right, lightning is prebaked, not real time reflections, and there is not any physics involved at all in the clothing, polygons quantity is small, it does look good, but for a game work and look cool you need a ton of things that stress the gpu even more.

@CrispingChicken9 жыл бұрын
CheesySombrero The environment is very small and derendering objects that become less or non-visible to the FOV is obviously key advantage to this, however the objects currently visible are very specific to textures and lighting collisions, reflectivity and opacity. All the features to make the objects and surfaces have the properties they have have to be constantly related to when rendering the new frame. This is a lot of work since all the object seem extremely high polymer and have large data array lists of properties, so Colm is probably quite correct it must take a very powerful computer to render and record this quality of an updated virtual world. Either that or Unreal Engine is one hell of an amazing engine.

And now due to Xbox One And PS4, the next 10 years as well. Top of the line technology is not everything in videogames, there are actually really good games in platforms like phones and handhelds, or downloadable indies for consoles and PC that don't need that really expensive tech to be good. And that doesn´t mean that I hate on hight-tech games because I can't afford them, there are real wonders in that category and it's great that there are people making them and people who can buy them and play them. But yes, some respect, tolerance, empathy and understanding would be nice.
@AidenWarren9 жыл бұрын
you are wrong, it seems that you didn't research, read of the Unreal Engine to know, so now there is nothing you can, until you read and see it for yourself, but here is the obvious thing that you are missing, most games on PS3 and now PS4, are using Unreal Engine 4, but even though that when going in the game and it shows the logos the Unreal Engine 4. Developers explains what it takes and the limitations of making certain games, but now PS4 already has games or the graphics that goes further of the limitations of the Engine and Graphics capabilities, Unreal Engine has nothing to do with the consoles and Graphics chips and cards. There is no holding back, Graphics and be as good as it can be, but the Limitations what holds it back, not the consoles, Regardless of Graphics cards, it's also what the Power of a PC Can handle, and requires RAM< 3.0 + Ghz, in which Specs Requirements to be able to play the game, Unreal Engine has the Limitation of you can do so much, you can't just go all out on pure Graphics, it's too much of what the current TECH of PC's, Graphics and Consoles can deal with. if it has enough power, it can run it, the reason behind this is because it can run the best graphics there is, it can, but here is what the Limitations are, the Graphics takes up all of it, and there is space needed to actually make the game, CGI, Story, Content, Mechanics, Character,s Music, the Production of the games that takes up Gigabytes. but if it's all out graphics, then you just a camera and move it around, there is no space left to add characters, mechanics, and story and the Movie, cut scenes. It's how a Balance Scale works, you need to put two things with the same weight for it to balance. also, what another thing that hold its back is money, devs just don't have the money to produce more limitations for that much graphics, now the PC Power and PS4 can handle this, its just he money that the devs willing to risk to spend. PS3, and PS4, can run these graphics and a PC can, it's made purely on graphics, now to actually make the game, you have no limitations left for it. what you gotta do when your out of space on a Computer, you gotta remove stuff to add more stuff.

Most of you are missingg the point with this. Dereau, a recognized artist, has produce quality models, textures and presented them well. The models clearly show a tight and precise workflow which is easily recognizable. Prebaked lighting and cubemaps aren't cheap methods, they're necessary methods. Using dynamic lighting to achieve this quality is absolutely shabby and isn't needed. It's a waste of resources. As for the camera, he's just walking around his scene. Maybe it's not the best way to show his scene off, but instead of bashing it, provide constructive criticism. All in all, it's OTHER people that are saying this is spectacular and uncanny, not Dereau. He's not telling everyone 'look how real and amazing this is', he's just uploading his recent work, as all artists do, and luckily has gained recognition. What a wonderful opportunity for an artist and his resume. This isn't a UE4 showcase or tech demo, it's a personal project he probably did whilst working on some title you lot may play one day. If you're a game developer, you should be aware that programming your own shaders, adding physics and realtime reflections isn't easy for an artist, bearing in mind that this is ONE guy. For those who are wondering, he has used prebaked lighting (like most games) and screen space reflections for this scene. Plus, the windows aren't open so the curtains wouldn't move... Right?

***** Surely the graphics are drawn from collision fetched from the object files for lighting and shaders. The light successfully curves around objects such as the curved chair meaning it is very accurate in terms of rendering shaders and shadows based on object polymer co-ordinates, what more would you need...? This is how objects can have opacity and reflection preferences in different polymers or groups of polymers (I think that is how UE4 is working with these skin related objects and all that but I'm not fond of Unreal Engine or many 3D engines in fact, but I have developed with 3 Dimensional objects and light/raycasting/shadowcasting).
@CrispingChicken9 жыл бұрын
***** ahh I get you now! Yes when UE4 include a more powerful and optomized graphic library to support lighting and reflections, many games can start being produced with new lighting effects. This is what we should all expect to see sooner in the next big games, things like reflection and improved lighting will come a lot faster, however for games to have the same quality objects and build of this virtual apartment I think we will unfortunately have to wait a while! But yes that's a good point and it would be a good addition to UE4!

Obviously a mistake whilst making the map. Doesn't take away how insanely detailed everything is. I can imagine with Oculus, this looks great! I'm not a game developer or programmer or anything so correct me if i'm wrong. But to all the people wondering why games do not currently look like this, well my theory would be this: This entire demo is basically super high res textures placed on STILL objects. Which in terms of computing wouldn't take that much power to run, basically would be the same as you viewing a bunch of 4k screenshots all at once. Now once you start adding movent, physics, and particles to textures this high, well that is when problems start arising. You would need one MONSTER of a machine to be able to process a 4k game at 60fps, i believe it's possible today with a couple titan x, or gtx 980ti maybe? but still, game studios aren't creating content this high mainly because the average consumer doesn't have the rig powerful enough to run things like this yet, and consoles couldn't even wish to try.. well yeah thats my theory on the whole thing. Sadly Moore's law has been proven to fall behind it's regular pattern since something like 2012 i believe, so technology isn't quite upgrading as fast as it used to, but hopefully we'll see games like this within the next decade or so would be nice >..

I am so used to 30 and a little over FPS. But this is so smooth it's disorienting. And I like it!
@NicolaiSyvertsen9 жыл бұрын
Excellent. But please smooth out the camera movements. I know this is just a capture of someone walking around in the scene but you can at least apply a spline to player input to smooth out the movements. It really takes you out of the scene with this staccato movement of the camera.

Lighting is baked, there is no reason why an interior from Rage or recently released Dying Light couldn't look as good (and sometimes it does). Now it would be amazing to see the time of the day changing.

Very cool. Now put an NPC in the mix and some particle systems, and an actual game.

the only real and obvious flaw is the curtains and the glass shaders used, a LERP with some directional grunge to make it make it more real should've been used. Some screenspace reflections wouldn't been bad either

To people wondering if you need a supercomputer for this, my first generation i7 875k from 2010 and a 5 year old GTX 660 graphic card handles this at 25-30 fps. I am amazed. The original link is dead, but you can download it using Wayback Machine.

darkzler It all depends if the console begin to use normal gfx cards, My GTX 750 can run this with no hickups. So it's all up to the console producers. If they choose to wait longer, then consoles will take more than 5 years for this to come.

the screen tearing is real :D looks awesome, however I find it a bit too blurry for the most part, like cmon we don't see so blurry in real life...if we don't have eye problems...but I guess that's not a valid point, since we're talking about computer generated graphics and not real life footage, so this is a big milestone....amazing!

Runs butter smooth on my GTX 770, but I didn't expect anything less from Unreal Engine 4, what a beautiful technology, and really nice work on the interior design and making it, it indeed looks very realistic. By the way, is there also a command to make it run in full screen? Alt + Enter doesn't seem to work and neither does adding "-fullscreen". :o
@eraldmulla9 жыл бұрын
To the uploader, is there any way to go in full screen mode? I wanna try viewing it in 3D with Nvidia 3d Vision glasses but can do it only if full screen! Curiousity question, is there anything pre-baked in this scene? My biggiest congratulations, beautiful work!

I think the shadows are pre-rendered and come with the textures, and the only thing that is being rendered is the Textures the 3D Modeling and the Reflections, so if an object moved or the sun changed it's position... we all get it right?

Mirrors are broken (looks like there's actual reflection, but then this "dirty" overlay comes over it, like on the wall), shadows look like stairs, and I wish I could just use MSAA or Super sampling instead of what looks like FXAA (blurry) Otherwise, this looks really good, especially with frame interpolation.

Found a couple of errors in it. Primarly on the reflections on the lights. The ones in the living room and the bedroom use the wrong reflection (bedroom uses living room and visa versa)

Input is one of most important part of gaming engine. But looks like there are lots of skips and negative acceleration.
