One of the best days of fly fishing we've ever had! So dang fun when the fish are looking up and the big bugs are out.

Okay..so I am going to ask a dumb question..........but why don't fly reels have gears to give the reel...say a 5:1 retrieve ratio so that when you hook a fish you can just reel him in instead of having yards of fly line tangling up all around a person........surely they could make one that has easy line strip on the outgo so you can build up your cast, but locks in some drag once you hook the fish. Or is it just that fly fisherman's reels have been pretty much the same for decades and decades.

Not super knowledgeable but here's my two cents: You definitely can just reel line in instead of stripping line in to get the fish to the boat. Most larger reels that use heavier weight line (8/9/10) for big fish are large abor so they essentially do exactly what you said and the line will come in quicker. With lighter weight rods like these though you don't want to put a ton of weight on the rod tip so it's safer to strip line in instead of just using the reel. Then you don't have to pull 10+ feet of line back off the reel for your next cast either

@@NoRodnoReel so you think every river on planet Earth is catch and release only?
@NoRodnoReel5 жыл бұрын
Joe Berry all rivers with wild trophy trout should be catch and release only, anything else can be catch and kill.

@@NoRodnoReel Well, that's just like your opinion man.
@NoRodnoReel5 жыл бұрын
Joe Berry it’s an opinion based on fact and conservation, because I want to conserve native trout populations so I can continue to fish and enjoy the wild trout for many years. If the fish are stocked or if there a warm water species than they usually don’t need very much protection and will thrive in most areas, trout on the other hand need protection if we want to continue to enjoy them.

Nice video but please try to get the fish back in the water within 10 seconds. Research shows more than 10 seconds can drastically affect spawning success even if the fish swims off.

Casey, learn how to strip in line like a normal person, I had to turn it off midway. It was painful to watch.
