Say what you will, Ryan Boundless never told a lie. He lived in Japan for a long time and genuinely did hate it here but what kept him complain about it was the number of people on the internet that deify Japan and minimize/ignore/justify/deny the shit aspects of the country. Having one person who lived in Japan and would shit on it on a daily basis prepared me for life in Japan more than 100 glorified travelogues which made up the Jvlog community. In the end he moved around and still bitches and moans about the countries he lives in but is clearly a lot happier. I think that's just his style.

If you call that “happier”, he caught multiple diseases and had been contemplating moving back to the states for money. He gets super depressed and you can tell when he has depression fits because he starts to make “I get so many hot women” videos. He makes decent content but when he starts doing the “Im such a Chad” thing it is very cringe. I do think there needs to be some sort of “dreamcrusher” series again that keeps people with mental illnesses thinking Japan is going to “magically fix it” from going. Lots of things people need to be aware of before committing to live there.

???????? 99,99999% ogf people who lives in Japan hates the country. I don't know any other country on the Internet who gets that much hate as Japan, not a single one. The funniest thing about all of this is that always introduce themselves as the "only one" who shows you guys the "dark side of Japan" when in reality every single person who lives in Japan (and even who doesn't) are always talking on how terrible this country really is. I insist, I have never met a single person who lives/has lived in Japan who's happy living in the country.

It’s possible but it’s also possible that he was looking for the negatives. If you’re a cynical person, any environment can be bad. Also negativity gets more views on KZbin. It’s sort of a “dirty secret” many KZbinrs utilize for extra clicks. And if I remember correctly to fight off a “troll” he did admit to making money off his videos

I agree, I think a lot of things Ryan said were really important since a lot of people at the time were only talking about how great japan is. I really like japan but there a lot of things that arent covered by most vloggers cause most people arent talking to people planning on living in japan. They're talking to tourists. Quite a few things that he mentioned in his videos arent anything ive experienced but its still useful information.

I went to Japan on the Jet Program back in 2013. Side note Scott I remember you randomly commented on my picture of my money I exchanged before going over there lol. I did Jet for 3 years and a two year master degree program. After getting my master’s I thought I’d stay in Japan and probably teach at a university. It’s better than being an ALT I thought. Well long story short, the goal post for becoming a university professor got moved. Now at that time in 2019 you needed to have a PHD published at least 5 research articles and have teaching experience. All to get a job you can only max out in 5 years unless the university really likes you and want to make you tenured. So I went back to the US to teach because as a teacher, not only did I make more money than a university professor in Japan, I have upward mobility and am working as a vice principal in a high school and can move up even more. My salary is like 4 times than it was on JET or what universities were offering.That’s something that would never happen in Japan.
@unrested
@unrested Ай бұрын
Yeah wow sounds like my situation. That’s why I moved back. I merely work as a simple art electives teacher for k-12 and I make 4 times what I made teaching or running my own business here. Even right now as I am not working and chilling in Japan for 2 months I’m making the most I’ve ever made. It’s really unfortunate that Gaijin are given little to no chance to live even a simple middle class life here on the pittance we are offered. I guess that’s why we always get the question “when going home?”
@TheTezExperience

@@unrested Japan should adjust the salaries in general. You are absolutely right. I’m glad you are able work in the US and still enjoy Japan in your off peak summer time and not have to live paycheck to paycheck like I did as an ALT in Japan like I did. It was cool while I was 23 just out of college but got old real fast as a 29 year old. Lol
@unrested
@unrested Ай бұрын
Yeah that is one thing that was killing my spirit here in Japan. Imagine I’m 40 and I’m earning the wage of a freshly graduated college student. It was crushing to my mentality to never be taken seriously by peers and just salary wise in general. I honestly felt like I was letting my family down. My first year back in America I was able to buy a car and then a house and secure a safety net for my family should japans situation ever get too dire. For the first time in ages I felt like I was living up to being the man of the family and that Japan had never given me that opportunity and most likely never would. I understand japans resolute stand against mass immigration as even being liberal myself I can see how immigration run amuck can upset a place like NY. But for those of us who relentlessly pay taxes, insurance, and retirement here (something I’m still doing abroad in America) and will never see any benefit from we should be given a chance to succeed. Alas we are forever seen as the dancing bear, a novelty where we work and live. Meanwhile I’ve added more Japanese children to the population than the average family which is below 1 child a family now. I love Japan I really do but I fear sometimes its stubborn ways will end up bankrupting the entire country. Anyway, thanks for convo it’s so refreshing to talk to someone who completely understands what I went through job wise

This is a cracking bit of J-Vlogging lore! I used to love pre 2015 Ryan's vids as he just seemed like a normal guy living in Japan trying to get by like everyone else. He offered a different perspective from the barrage of "OMG a convenience store... IN JAPAN" videos that were popular during the peak J-Vlogging era. I always thought he was actually quite talented at telling stories, and I enjoyed his daily life vlogs about life in Kobe and Osaka. They had a really cozy vibe to them. He didn't shy away from the negative aspects of Japan, which was very refreshing and needed at the time, but he still seemed like a decent guy overall. You could always tell he was quite unhappy living in Japan tho. He often seemed kinda down and legit frustrated about living here. Although, to be fair he didn't seem to do much to try and improve his situation like making a career for himself etc. Idk why he even stayed that long as he came only for a girl he liked, but that was like 20yrs ago. When he started with his "dreamcrusher" series and onto ragebaiting weebs full-time, it was the start if his slow decline. Ryan went completely bonkers after that. At first it was quite obvious he was taking the piss just to get a rise out of people obsessed with Japan, but it wasn't that serious and he'd go back to his normal content. He started milking the trolling thing so hard as it got him a lot more views. This would eventually morph into his future persona. Over a next few years, he privated most of his videos, successfully alienated almost his entire original audience, and finally left Japan for good. Now he's off gallivanting around Africa and probably up to no good. Good for him lol if he is happy. BTW he seems to be back on a seperate channel under his old "Ryan Boundless" name and is making content again.

This is insane. After years I was like “what the hell was the name of that dude who vlogged his shitty time teaching English in Japan” and it was killing me for years. Just 4 days ago I sat down with ChatGPT, Google, and a Coffee and did some proper digging around. I had no idea what his name was, just some vague hints I could throw at gpt and Google and go from there. It took a couple hours of digging around, which is where I found your channel, and discovered the ridiculously large number of what I now know as “jvloggers”, but I eventually found him, almost by accident even. Turns out dude scrubbed his Japan content is now manwhoring it out in Africa or something. So I wanted to know what the jvlogging community thought of Ryan, and was kind of surprised to see not many talked about his channel, though the few bits of content I did come across were surprisingly supportive of his harsh takes. And then you upload this video about him LOL Incredible timing.
@unrested
@unrested 2 ай бұрын
It’s funny, the more I do these nostalgic flashbacks the more I get messages like these of people who were trying to find these long forgotten jvloggers. Yeah I think we are supportive of Ryan was the fact that he pretty much laid on his sword and destroyed his channel just to talk about all the negatives of Japan. Some were exaggerated but most were pretty true and things that pissed us off too. So I think most of us were happy that he would complain the way some of us wanted to but at the same time didn’t want to turn our channels into Japan hate channels.

Hi my name is Lauren I am commenting using a friend's youtube account. I am loving all of these throwback videos you are doing, it really brings me back! I was just thinking about Mira and came across your recent video on her and now this one. Ryan Boundless. I don't know what to say about him, but he was entertaining. I remember he posted a video venting about "how rude Japanese people," were. His words not mine. Anywho, he went on to describe an encounter with a Japanese person that he thought was so rude because they would not look him in the eye while they were talking. He blocked me after I made a comment pointing out the elephant in the room: Ryan had (at that time) a lazy eye, and a quite pronounced one at that. Maybe the Japanese person he thought was rude didn't know which eye to look in! I know it might not be the nicest thing to comment but I meant it in all honesty.

Goals: Be around long enough, or be cool enough to make it on Unrested's: Natsukashii JVloggers series. Ryan's channel was the type of channel that people needed. People need to see the realistic side of Japan, of course he sometimes went over board. I didn't see all of it, just snippets over time. For some reason the realistic videos always either do really well or really bad. Someday I'll get back into it. Also when do we get a TKYOSam video?

Yeah Ryan was sincere. I got annoyed back then with people basically calling him a d***head for being unhappy, because people can have differing experiences. It's like telling someone with depression to just get over it, but for life experiences instead of mental health. (And yeah Ryan was also upfront about his struggles mentally and emotionally - that's also what annoyed me a bit, some of the people who were throwing shade had clearly struggled, you could tell, but they didn't have the damn balls to talk about it.) Obviously there are people who romanticise stuff too much just as there are people who go out of their way to spread negativity. Ryan was not really the latter, but yeah it's not like anyone is necessarily going to experience everything bad that he did, many people are in Japan and happy... The 'Japan isn't a first world country' takes seemed a bit goofy to me because if you live in enough developed countries in Europe or Asia you'll see plenty of comically 'backwards' stuff. I think a lot of people with perspectives like that are from fairly developed areas of the US. I also think really in a lot of cases when people speak about racism in Japan they're experiencing for the first time the microaggressions that come with being in a minority group (in a country where minorities are actually still pretty rare no less), and being like 'damn this is racist af' but actually it's kind of just like, not even the teeniest tip of the racism iceberg. I'm not saying that makes it OK or that there aren't more severe forms of discrimination (at both an individual and systematic level) nor am I trying to diminish people's experiences but... yeah. This all said Ryan was still kinda sad last I saw his stuff. Guy deserves a break.

He was maybe the one and only completely honest Japan vlogger..? Not hateful but he gave it to you straight. The vaaaaaast majority of people seeking out Japan-related videos are anime/manga fans deeply resentful of any Japan-related presentation which is not completely spotless. 95% of them will never reach Japan. Of those that do, 90% will never develop the Japanese skills to really know the country; they'll have a two-week trip around Japan and consider themself some kind of "Japan expert". A smaller number of dedicated gaijin will leave Japan within 3 years, probably less than 2. Of those who stay a long time in Japan, 90% are people who started out with few job prospects in back in the Occident, or they did have some job choices at the beginning, but those diminish the longer one stays in Japan. You end up STUCK in Japan. Could be u have a half J family and mortgage, or for some more pathetic ones, that's the best gig they can land. See, a gaijin is similar to parsley on the side of a big steak dinner --the parsley LOOKS nice. But who wants to eat a plate of parsley? NOBODY. You're a quaint decoration and little more, you're not going to be taken really seriously, even if you wave a Japanese passport around. You're not REALLY Japanese, and that absolutely is a racial thing. The gaijin disputing that is stupid or a liar. The smart gaijin will bail, go home and then make Japan-related videos for otaku or Engrish learners --rest assured those gaijin will really, really watch their asses and will hold back very much they learned about Japan. They're going to feed their audience the info that sells, which is ALL positive info. The one surprising aspect is even if you can speak/read Japanese fluently, your skills after returning are not really marketable (outside of YT vlogger or maybe freelance translation). The vast majority of tech companies in the Occident doing biz with Japan want an ETHNIC Japanese, and that's true even if they're spouting off about multiculturalism and globalism 24 hours a day. Honky J expert...? NO THANKS...!! That's their attitude, even if they don't say it.

@ImRezaF

@@unrested For me, it's not really a matter of efficiency as it is more about flexibility. I gotta admit that i'm not very familiar with central AC since i came from countries that mainly use individual AC but central AC gave me the impression every room gonna have the same temperature and with no ability to have different temp for different rooms.

@@unrested how is the dollar strong when a Starbucks drink will cost you 8 bucks there in US? It looks like it's not worth much if you spend 1400yen and leave with only one cup in your hands lol. The only thing giving you impression that it's strong is the fx which is manipulated. In Japan, 30 years ago, drink at machine was 110yen, today, 120yen. Purchasing power keeps constant while dollar lost like what, how much was a Starbucks drink in the 90s?

Ryan Boundless, now there's a blast from the past, lol. KZbin would not stop recommending him to me when I was first interested in moving to Japan, around 2014-2016. There were J-vloggers who focused only on the positive aspects of life in Japan, making it out to be all sunshine and rainbows... and then there was Ryan, who only focused on the negative aspects (and seemed to just be unhappy and an unpleasant person to deal with in general), most of which were likely exacerbated whenever he dealt with them by his terrible attitude. Not sure why his wife would want to divorce him, he seemed like such a catch /s. Saying all that, I can see that negative downward spiral Ryan was on being an easy trap for gaijin to fall into, especially if you're moving to Japan expecting life there to be like your favourite anime or all the glitzy travel vlogs.

I find any foreigner praising almost everything about Japan rather unnatural. I mean, I’ve been living here in Japan for nearly 50 years as a Japanese national and I’m still struggling to blend into this small suffocating society. Every day I try to keep a smile on my face as if nothing disappointing is happening but deep down I feel crushed so many times, really. Some of the things those so-called dream “crushers” bitterly say about Japan are actually right. They just show you the reality of Japan. In order to be able to accomplish what you aspire to do you need to discern which dream to follow as a genuine dream and which one to actually see as a delusion and thus to crush…😢

The guy has highly depressive outlooks on many parts of life masked as having a strong sense of realism, which is something I've seen mostly long-term depressive people do and I believe it's a primary method of coping. To me, he appears like a man who was permanently wounded mentally by his earlier adult life and has never learned to appropriately move on and grow past it. His content creation existence today is just an echo chamber of non-sense in my opinion which is unfortunate.

Mmm, yea its not a 1st world country. If you need to work 12 hours and basically spend your life at work only to appear as you are doing well and the country is doing well, the country isnt doing well and you aren't either. You devote most of your life just to make it seem like things are goin good, devoting all that time and energy to create an illusion that things are good and the system there works... Mmm, thats why the Japanese currency fell to half of the American after the pandemic, they couldn't keep going to work to keep up that illusion in order to maintain the delusion. Ehh, if you dont know that it offends, its not really being racist. When I was a kid just started working, I asked a African American guy I worked with why his hair was greasy. He became enraged and I had no idea why and became confused. I myself am not and I didnt expect that to be offensive, it was something different and I wanted to know why. I couldnt imagine how it would become like that, so I asked. Turns out thats a racist thing to ask, I didnt know it at the time, I do now, but the point is some things you end up having to do before you find out its racist and offensive and not do em anymore. I imagine the Japanese are pretty much the same in alot of cases. They dont teach what is offensive to ask another race anywhere, so you gotta guess.
