There are only 3 countries with a nuclear triad, usa russia, and France/ UK. I'm counting them as one bc they have a very limited underwater nuclear arm. The US is robust, and who knows how well russias is
@SmokePoppa4 ай бұрын
That's actually not true. Mutually assured destruction has been an absent concept for quite some time. Prior to the "START" program, the United States alone had approximately 4X the amount of nuclear weapons that exist in the world today. During the 1970s, the USA and USSR had approximately 7X as many nuclear weapons as exist today. It was complete overkill designed to do exactly that. The United States realized that approximately 90% of the population of Russia lives in Moscow or St. Petersburg so as few as 5-10 special tomahawk cruise missiles could eliminate Russia as a serious threat, but that would violate the Geneva Convention because they would be specifically targeting civilians which is actually not what nuclear war is about. The vast majority of nuclear weapons are targeted at nuclear missile silos, military bases, military areas, etc. Civilian targets were not targeted unless it was a complete weapons release by all parties. Having those extra silos was an integral part of the planning because nobody knows where their missile is targeting. Is this missile targeting China? Is it targeting Germany? That meant you had to either target everything or wait and see. Keeping in mind that it takes roughly 30-50 minutes for ICBMs to go from one side to the other, then add in that you have systems like the B2 and B1 along with submarine based launch systems, and the entire thing gets crazy. During Joint Guardian (1999 Kosovo) the US troops talked with Russian troops who basically stated that they lived in terror that the United States would launch nuclear weapons at them. The point being, nobody wants or ever wanted nuclear war. They talk the talk and posture because they want to be heard and not dismissed like children.
@SmokePoppa4 ай бұрын
@@josephsmith6777 The nuclear triad is a dated concept that's like talking about how thick your walls are surrounding your kingdom. Things like nuclear submarines and stealth bombers are first strike weapons disguised as a guarantee to penetrate. It forces the opposition to invest heavily into countermeasures which was the weapon of choice used during the cold war. The USA bankrupted the USSR instead of fighting them with soldiers. Our true nuclear deterrence at this point is our submarine based weapons which is why most of the cold war era ICBMs are rusting and their systems haven't been upgraded for the service life of like three different military uniforms. Truth be told, I don't know if they even work anymore.
@josephsmith67774 ай бұрын
@SmokePoppa honestly, they are very well maintained, especially on our subs I don't know where I wrote it but I basically agreed with you since the usa would never be a first strike nation having our subs and b2 and newer air wing I think the land based are basically for show anyway

The only reason why the USA uses the RD-180 was so that we could infuse money into the Russian economy so that their rocket scientists didn't go work for Iran or North Korea to build ICBMs when the soviet union collapsed. The entire block exploded with a force equivalent of a nuclear blast. No radiation was detected and left Chinese observers puzzled.
@SmokePoppa4 ай бұрын
@@andrewgoldman1710 First off, your understanding of physics is incorrect. Terminal velocity is the constant speed that a freely falling object eventually reaches when the force of gravity pulling it downward is balanced by the air resistance (drag) acting upward. The rods from god concept falls short due to the extreme weight being lifted to space that would be required to achieve similar energy displacement as a nuclear weapon. A 1000 kg rod from 300,000 feet would strike the Earth with about 12.5 gigajoules of energy. That's like 3 tons of TNT. The bomb dropped on Hiroshima was 63 Terajoules and that's looked at like a firecracker compared to modern nukes. In order to be competitive, the rods from god concept would need projectiles that weigh something like 3500 tons. We could complicate the math by adding features like rockets but the variation would be minimal. That's why Rods from God was never implemented past concepts. There are theoretical applications where it works nicely with military strategy. Instead of trying to replace a nuclear weapon, the rods could be configured to work as deep earth penetrators designed to target facilities like NORAD. Likewise, they could be used as first strike weapons to target naval ports to take out naval vessels like the pearl harbor attack. The most realistic place that we'd ever see the rods from god concepts used is in combination with the concept of orbital payload deployment. The USA is shifting to use drones and robotics on the battlefield, so in theory an entire division of infantry robots and all of their gear could be stored in the vacuum of space and could make landfall anywhere in the world in 10 minutes or less. The rods could be used to prep a landing zone for incoming drop pods. Additionally the same concept could be applied but the drop pod is given a glider like shape like a wing suit for cargo and it could glide 200-1000 miles deploying special forces robots with vehicles. The future of warfare is bright boys and you ain't seen nothing yet.

Developed by the Dept of Energy and the DoD in the 1990s, this project went black before the year 2000. The rumor is that it was further developed into a plasma-based, point defense system. Based at Barking Sands military base on Kauai island, the new system, dubbed "Marauder I and II" uses multiple batteries of focused plasma cannons, which can fire rapidly. The plasma burst uses advanced cavitation technology, and can travel at roughly 10, 000k per second to the target, hit to kill (incinerate). An ICBM from the 1950s is hypersonic and the Kinzhal turned out to be a Russian lie thus no more potent then a standard air launch IRBM, thus gets intercepted often by Patriot and MEADS. Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) is a given since the 1960s, and what is the US ground launched anti ballistic missile system along with US Naval assets is to stop a few missiles launched say by a North Korea or a Iran in the future, not thousands of missiles from China or Russia. Avant Garde no more than a glide not powered hypersonic vehicle but it is the US not Russia who have proven powered hypersonic manoeuvrable flight recently. With the closure by Russia and the non involvement by China of the Strategic Arms' Limitation Treaty (SALT) it is the US who is will gain from recent research advancements in powered manoeuvrable hypersonic, deliverable conventional and nuclear weapons. One must note it is the US that will have far more money to do research than Russia or China and one might want to throw in the research done by the west as well. Defence budgets are as and one might add NATO countries, Japan, Australia, South Korea in the research efforts ................a new cold war has arrived "thanks to Xi and Putin" Defence budgets are as accordingly USA = 830 billion, China = 220 billion, Russia = 89 billion as it seems to me it is the US and west who have the monetary advantage of research.

Why Tungsten for the Rods from god? Because it has the highest melting point of any metal and is the hardest.

Seems even crowbar sized or slightly larger would be effective if traveling at orbital speeds.

As US officials have already said, Rods from God isn't feasible. The cost and logistics it would take to get multiple 10 ton tungsten rods into space would be impossible. It's hard enough to get a few personnel and their equipment up there, unfortunately

Up until Elon musks Space Ex debuted the USA was solely dependent on Russian rockets to get to space… it’s 2024 and the only conventional ground launched delivery systems consist of (HIMARS/ATACMS) that’s not promising given the fact these designs are from the 60’s and country’s with the half the budget have a greater, more robust inventory of “similar” capabilities if not better.

Next decades? Are you nuts you better get this crap done with and you better hurry up with defense being first and foremost over everything else if we aren't here what's the sense of doing something else since we won't be here and we need to be able to take GPS off line in seconds to stop them from getting accurate hits on cities

It still comes down to Russia's number one nuclear threat and if they launch even their older icbms there is no way we can take out all the warheads you have to take them out before they split in space

I think it is more than an invitation to fire on us to allow them to become able with more capable weapons. You must strike before they develop an equivalent capability. Essentially equally capable advisaries do not have the reason to sensibly launch an attack without any advantage. It's critically important to maintain an equal to or superior to status at all times
