For sure! I got the house I live in, it had all the original 70's wallpaper and just totally outdated, but only in the way it was decorated. Everything else was brand new. They struggled selling it for months, so we got it for a HUGE discount. We've lived here for 4 years now with little problems. Definitely a steal!

Simone's situation is a prime example of buying a home but not truly being able to afford to furnish it/decorate it properly regardless of the reason, money or simply not knowing what to do. $20K above asking price is amazing! I hope she moves to her new condo and takes all the new information she learned and makes that condo awesome!

When she kept saying, "It's not my taste," it reminded me of the program SELLING HOUSES AUSTRALIA, in which designer Shayna told a homeowner, "We are designing to SELL, not designing for you to STAY."

I find it very interesting that potential buyers cannot see past someone else's decorating limitations. Structural flaws are one thing, and I can see that having too furniture in a room can disguise it's size, but the color of the bedspreads, and granny-ish furniture shouldn't be an issue. I could totally see this house as mine and what could be done with it. When I looked at what would be my house, no amount of forest green paint and ugly furniture could obscure the leaded glass windows, hardwood floors, and high ceilings.

I know, I've pondered this for years since I'm an HGTV junkie. I think it has to do with the furnishings making the room feel (and I do mean feel) dowdy. It's like it would be better to show an empty house than one that feels tired and unkempt. I think if the house has good bones, the order of bad impressions to good impressions goes from cluttered and dowdy -> uncluttered but dowdy -> empty -> well-staged. Someone with a flipper's eye can see past all that, of course.

That has always been my thought!! But I guess since I am the kind of person who loves to imagine how a house would look no matter what's in it, it sure helps and probably not everybody has that kind of imagination. If rearranging furniture, painting walls, adding some personal touches here and there would help sell a house then why not. Still if I enter a house my imagination can go wild and I can picture my furniture, my books, my arts in it right away. Plus i love to imagine and do (when I can) how the house would look if taking a wall down or building a new one..... but again it must not to everyones cup of tea ;-)

I bought 2 houses that were ugly, had never been updated, and furnished badly. In the first one, my sister, mother and I spent 40 hours cleaning the disgusting kitchen. I got it dirt cheap because most people couldn’t see what I did. I spent money on cosmetics such as interior paint, new kitchen and bathroom floors, furnished it nicely and gave the front great curb appeal. Because of that and the market, I sold it for 75 percent more than what I paid, in less than 5 years. The second house was just furnished very badly, a dirt taupe all over, and had layers of carpet in the bathroom. I did pretty much the same improvements with it and made money selling it in a depressed marker. But, most people really lack imagination and vision.

You can use shoes to make art. I have 20,000 pairs of shoes, too :) and I have turned some of my older shoes into beautiful artworks for dining room, kitchen, and the baths. You can do A LOT with the shoes :)

I loved the homeowner. This was a rare episode where the buyers actually seemed like real buyers with genuine reactions of interest, not just people grabbed from a coffee shop to walk through for the cameras. I really enjoyed this episode from beginning to end.

This was a difficult house to arrange. Definitely should not have a bathroom just off the dining room, but I am also not liking it just off the living space (really not much of a room). I would have turned that area into a nice entry way with storage, a nice comfy bench, and a coat/hat rack so having a bathroom there would not be awkward. I would have made a nice living space where they put the dining area like she had it before but with only a small sofa and two comfy chairs (not over-sized). And instead of a bar in the kitchen, I would have put a small eating table with 4 chairs just like she had it before. No need for a separate dining room for such a small house. I would not have had a bar with stools at all. Also, I would have turned the small area just off the kitchen near the back of the house into an area for a desk and small chair. You could do your work on your computer while looking out at the back. Having a bathroom near any living space especially such a small space is just awkward.

Simone is classic; people buying a house because "other people tell you it's time" and get sucked into that belief, then as time goes by you realize you are not happy with your choice or you're actually spending too much a month on mortgage payments or your house is too far from your job and you spend more time in your car.

What a great series! Very grounded in what is doable and working primarily with the owners possessions helps us regular people rethink what's possible with what we have and not having to rely exclusively on expensive staging to sell or even just refresh our space. i think she's counting in the estimated cost of labor. if you do a quick estimate of the 'cost' of each set of building materials, it usually adds up to a lot less. plus she's throwing in free labor because she's got a youtube channel, which is making her bank. but, effectively, you're right: contractors will charge you an arm and a leg to do any of this. factor this all in. do what work you can, ikea the rest, and pray...

How you keep your home is a reflection of you. If I hadn't seen the homeowner, my first impression would have been "a sloppy and unkempt FRAT HOUSE" (sans the shoes). Many people get caught up in the "I want to buy a house" idea without having a clear understanding of what it takes to maintain a home. For what we saw, the house needed cosmetic upgrades, but I wonder at what we didn't see, i.e., structural, plumbing or wiring issues. Kudos to the Unsellables Team, good work on this one.

On an episode of Holmes on Homes, that is a fake window area. He actually removed that weird addition that has no purpose other than to make it look different. He even offered a discount to the adjoining house to remove their's also if they wanted and they did have him remove it. It is just built onto the roof and not a part of the home.

Originally unfinished, it would have had a window in the gable dormer. Chances are that it is framed properly into the roof structure. Often, on those houses, that attic area is able to be finished into a rather lovely bedroom, which would make this a 4 bedroom house.

I am sorry that when the powder room was added that someone did not have the vision to have put it where the closet was and create the door under the stairs like Anthony planned. Entering and exiting a bathroom there would have been much less intrusive and that lovely little window would have been in an actual room, not hidden in a closet.

You'd be surprised at what people do or don't do. When we were looking for our home a few years back, we saw some of the dirtiest and most unkempt houses that I could imagine. The two worst, we didn't even walk through the entire house. #1 - This one was almost completely empty but the little furniture that was left behind was just garbage but the listing had this "quirky vintage furniture" included in the asking price. Translation: seller didn't want to pay the dump fee. We walked into the living room, saw the broken couch, then proceeded into the kitchen which has numerous roaches walking around and promptly walked back out. Once in the car, my boyfriend told me that there were either baby roaches or bed bugs on the couch; he saw tiny critters walking all over it when I walked away. This house didn't even meet the bedroom minimum we wanted. That combined with how disgusting it was, no need to keep looking. #2 - Walked in and immediately were hit with the smell of pee and "I never clean this place". There were stains all over the carpet, one so large that it almost took up the entire dining area. We glanced into the backyard through one of the windows and noticed that there was a fallen saguaro in the backyard that took down a large chunk of the back property brick fence. It was obvious from how rotted the saguaro was that it had fallen ages ago and just left there. Walked out of that one too. If you fail to fix that, I can't imagine that you took care of anything else in your house.

I've watched all of season one that was available and now on second show of second season. I love the show. One thing I've noticed is that nearly every house is redone in the same color. Wonder if they get a discount on that color? It's pretty but it's used often.

I frequently drop into local thrift and charity shops, estate sales, etc. and it is amazing what decor items you can find that is priced to sell fast. There is a lot of junk, of course, but many vintage items such as oil paintings, china and stemware, linens and small furniture that look classy, once they get out of the ratty shops and into your homes. $100 would go a long way at Simone's.

She's obviously very successful in her career as a business analyst. As a single 30 year-old, she bought a home in a hot Toronto neighborhood. Now she's learned her lifestyle & budget don't match with a home ... She's going into a condo. No clinging to the house. I thought more like the dump - stuff that wouldn't sell, even at a big discount, at garage sales. Why the heck did she buy the house if she couldn't afford the mortgage payments? How did she even QUALIFY for a mortgage? This program takes place in Canada, they didn't have the "mortgage derivative" junk that went on down here in the states and crashed the real estate market (and then the stock market) and wiped out a major corporation, and the portfolios of colleges, 401(k) plans and pension plans all across the US.

Amazing transformation. I sure miss these old HGTV shows, Designed to Sell, Decorating Cents, they whoed the average person how to sell their home on a budget. Now HGTV only sells real estate or expensive houses with expensive demo and rebuilding. Also, has anyone ever seen anything about gardening? Sad.

If she has the money to get a Library Card, she should consider that many libraries work in conjunction with local artists' guilds that donate/provide art-work, or have 'hanging art' that is loaned out, the way books are; there are generally many selections and it doesn't need to be brought in for a re-loan until 2 months or so...Also, estate-sales, and garage sales...Really, I think she doesn't 'love' the house, only what it represents...and that is fine. But--the designer is correct in that the house reflects the owners lack of personal interest. The house needs to reflect some warmth. I know the design team will really help get this house sold!

Well DUH! Poor Simone. Her home looks like she took everyones castoffs. But she did jot get any of their pictures, something easily bought cheaply at yard sales and secondhand stores. She obviously has no clue about decorating. And she needs to be neater. Also, this home will never look better until someone puts windows in both dormers.
