I bought a condo in the competitive Toronto market in late 2019. The unit which I bought was very untidy with mounds of dirty laundry, messy kitchen, and cat hair everywhere. They were tenants of the previous owner and they clearly did not want to move so didn’t care how it showed. But I knew that they would be taking their clutter and dirty clothes with them when they moved out. I was actually happy to find a good unit that showed really poorly because so many people can’t look over the superficial stuff and the market was continuing to go up rapidly. We negotiated a professional cleaning (not just the standard ‘broom swept’ condition) and I painted all the walls from builder’s white once I took possession. Amazing how much of a difference good staging can make!

I am from Toronto too and I would agree with you, it is a competitive market. You were lucky that your place was originally was not as move in ready as many buyers would like. Our house (bought 2000), was really disgusting and was sitting on the market for 3 weeks with absolutely no interest. Cockroaches that were really noticeable as soon as you walked in. When my husband and an inspector walked into the washroom, there were EELS swimming around in the bathtub !! Despite the grossness, these things were relatively easy fixes because this house had good bones. 🦝🦝🦝

No kidding! It's called, dusting, vacuuming, and CLEANING! You show your home in this state?! Yikes! You don't need a decorator or redecorator, if you can't do the cleaning yourself, hire a cleaning crew instead, and then, keep up the clean! If you don't, the next house won't make any difference, it will get junked again.

I grew up with my parents and my two sisters at the time and me and my sisters shared one bed room,we each got a corner of the room to put our things in like jewlry,hair supplies etc etc on our dresser,we had two beds on each side of the room and one bed was a pull out bed that l had.Because l was the neatest out of us girls l got two corners to put my things in and we were organized and neat and made it work🥰❤️🖤💚

when people say they have outgrown a house, I wonder what they actually mean by that and how they get to that decision? this house is rather large by some standards and , all they really have to do is chuck out some of the stuff they really dont need and build storage for the rest .

So true... that little boys room is great now... just add some built in cubes at the bottom of the closet... or buy those see thru plastic towers of drawers (my son had 3 towers of drawers in his room plus 2 under bed containers).. and assign him some storage space in the family room... show him how to organize only like things in each drawer... so that when he wants to play with ? It’s there all in one place... And they should institute the one thing in- one thing out rule for their kids bringing new toys into the house.. teach them to donate toys they don’t play with to kids that don’t have many toys... you can raise great kids that way! I realize that their bedrooms are a bit small.. but the family room was huge!!

To give a different perspective, it can also mean just that it is no longer big enough. I have relatives who, to gain a foothold on the housing market, bought a small two bedroom home. It was what they could afford at the time and allowed them to start as a couple and then later, have a child. However, now they have moved up in their careers, have built equity in their home, and are expecting a child of the opposite gender. They have reached the decision that they need a house with a third bedroom and a basement, which makes perfect sense.

I think the number of bedrooms/kids/genders is the key. A two bedroom house won't work long for a family with 2 kids of different genders. However, this was a three bedroom house. I suspect what they really wanted was a play room where their kids could set up big creations and leave them for periods of time to keep adding onto. The boy already had two towers of drawers in his original room, so that wasn't the problem. That said, there does come a point where you just have a mess and are no longer saving it as an ongoing project and it just needs to be cleaned up.

Anyone but me get kind of peeved when 20 somethings walk in and whine “I want a turn- key house “. You guys should’ve seen some of the black holes we started up in! I was thrilled to get off street parking and laundry hook ups! Also, I’ve gotten some sweet deals because I’m not afraid to use elbow grease.

My parents bought an acreage with a partially-built house when my brother was 5 and I was 3. We lived in a converted shed with no plumbing or electricity until my Dad had the house finished to the point where we could move in. You can tell the progress from the Christmas photos over the years - from plywood floor in the living room, to linoleum, to carpet. When our baby sister was born, she shared my bedroom until Dad was able to build my brother a room in the basement. And I do mean "basement", with unfinished concrete floors and walls. We had one bathroom with no shower, just a bathtub. Funny thing is, I don't remember ever feeling like our house was too small, even when I was a surly teenager and wanted my privacy.

In the 60s and 70s - we had a couple of toys each that stayed in our bedrooms. No way were toys strewn over the lounge and dining area. Adults need to take back their homes. Children have overtaken the homes.

That size home would have been a dream home as far as I'm concerned back when my children were young. I don't know why they considered that a starter home. Our first home was about 900 sq ft. Then second was about 1200 and the one I'm in today is 2200 sq ft.

I get what you mean, especially from a more urbanized perspective these homes are humongous. I have a theory though, I think its measured in years of debt. A starter home has you a slave for thirty years, your second house for fifty and the third one's debt outlives your children.

I live in a wonderful neighborhood where working-class homes were built between the 1920s-50s. Most of them are 3-BR, 1-BA, 800-900sf on gigantic lots. The scene back then was that kids went outside. A lot of the homes are being scraped off for 2000sf duplexes, which are "starter homes" for yuppie couples. My elder neighbors just don't get it. Many of them raised 4, 6 or 6 kids in 3-bedroom homes.

I love the finished house. This is one episode where I think Sophie and her team have really struck gold. I still cannot believe what some people demand of a house. I was one of two boys in a 1,000 sq ft home with a single bath. Our house NEVER looked like that. There is plenty of space, and now looks terrific.

For the love. I think your harsh criticism is out of line. This soldier should be respected for his sacrifice and also his wife who keeps it all together while working as a nurse. So the house was a little messy. Big deal, they weren’t exactly living in squalor. And they obviously weren’t keeping the house ‘show ready’ after such a long period on the market. They were an adorable family and really appreciative of the help.

I really liked this episode! It’s the very first one that actually kept kids rooms decorated as kids rooms! And they allowed way more clutter in the kids rooms and the entertainment center than I’ve ever seen! They also spent a lot of money for things like a new laminate flooring for the family room instead of just their usual paint and a few small projects.. plus the large entertainment cent and the Murphy bed for the boys room..! Wow ! Yes I’ve been binge watching Unsellables for the past few days....lol.. I’ve had a stomach virus and been stuck in bed... I love reminiscing too - I used to watch this show back when it was on TV.. I stumbled upon another YT channel with part of the first season, then this channel popped up...

The Murphy bed and the entertainment center are fine if you are planning to remain in the house. Try moving them out of the house after the house is sold. The units have to be dismantled, and packed in the moving truck. Then they have to be reassembled in the new house, with no assembly instructions. The original contractor has all the instructions in his head. The parts will be dumped somewhere.

Amen! I don’t get how the first thought is bigger house rather than less stuff. I do understand the lego issue. My boy was into them and no matter how much storage I created, he had more legos! He was chronically ill and spent large swaths of time in the hospital so people always bought him lego sets to work on so we tolerated it. In fact, I miss stepping on legos now!

I rent a one bedroom + loft apartment that was constructed five decades ago. There is no hall closet for the vacuum cleaner, broom or coats. My ceiling is thirty plus feet high. A waste of design space!

As a European even I think 50m2 is way too small for a family of 4. I think atleast 75/80m2 will be needed and still it will be small.

A lot of people don't really know how to turn a house into a home. Start with two things before you decide you need a bigger house (unless you're having twins or adopting a sibling group): 1) Hire a professional to teach you how to massively declutter & store what you actually need; 2) Hire a designer to help you find you design style/color palette and make a plan (e.g. painting over dark maroon or navy with a light and airy paint color is a no-brainer if your room seems too cramped. Ditto replacing heavy curtains with lighter sheers, putting in more useful lighting, and adding a mirror.) A few hours with either/both of these professionals will cost a FRACTION of what it will cost to sell up, buy a new home, and move.

An already nice decent space, this family just needed to unload all the toys, etc. A few paint changes and storage solutions really helped this very accommodating family. A new wood floor helped too!

I grew up in base housing. They were small. Sometimes they were weirdly configured . Sometimes there was no base housing and a bunch of families lived in a British manor house from the Norman era with only 2 bathrooms. Other times we were in a motel with 4 other families on Key Largo. Only one unit had a kitchen. The manor hall had a dining room. No TV. No A/C. No phones except one communal. It was a blast. In Hawaii, we had a corner unit of a 10 plex with banana trees and tropical fish in an old bath tub. We did have A/C and a dishwasher. My room was known as "the lizard lounge"! No holes in the walls. No tape on the walls. No painting. It was always an adventure! Furniture was someone else's taste. My mother used flat sheets to decorate with. Sometimes a fitted sheet exactly fit the upholstered pieces. We had one or two pieces that went with us all over the world. It always felt like home. Moving every 3 years kept our creative juices flowing. EVERYTHING GOT PUT AWAY IN IT'S OWN PLACE. IF MY ROOM EVER LOOKED LIKE THIS I WOULD BE RESTRICTED FOR ONE GRADE PERIOD!!!

Agreeing with you, Lisa Williams. Discipline might be helpful in getting toys into toy chests. If a couple more containers are necessary, and it appears they are, then by all means, buy & use. It's less expensive than a whole new house.

Let me guess, parents just expect kids to magicly pick up their stuff. Doesn't work that way. If the kids are struggling to put their toys and other belongings away. It's usually because they have too many things or inadequate storage. Firstly, reduce the number of toys. Pack them away for a month and put it out of the kids reach. But keep the same amount of storage. See if it makes it easier for the child to pack up the toys. If it does, great. If it doesn't, either they still have too many, the kids lazy or there's inadequate storage. If storage is the problem then buy more storage solutions and be creative. Also, make it as easy as possible for the kid to make their bed themselves. That bed in the boys room may of offered more play or storage space. But it would of made it hard to make his bed.

It's sad that people really don't take care of their homes. Keeping a home clean and clutter free really comes in handy when it's time to sell but it's nice to live in a clean home too. We've walked away from many homes simply because they were cluttered and dirty then you notice every little thing. Many many people simply don't take care of their homes and just stuffed them full of crap.

Honestly, I have seven children and whereas I have to stay on top of the toys I have the children pick them up. The toddlers have a huge toy box that all of their toys go in and the older children have boxes that go on shelves or under the beds. I also have the older children declutter and throw away broken toys and trash. I declutter the toddler's room.

Years ago I was looking at property and went into a house where the lady had just left to take her kids to school. There were dirty dishes all over the kitchen, in the sink, on the stove, on the table, etc. The kids rooms looked just like this with toys and crap everywhere. Then in the laundry room there was a huge pile of dirty laundry on the floor that smelled horrible! I said to the real estate agent, nope, not this house, lets go!

I really love the changes. It’s so hard for military families. Mom holds down the fort when dad is deployed. When Dad comes home, it’s almost like he’s just visiting. The transitions are tough. Even when he is home, they both come home beat, tired. Many families move frequently. The furniture they invest in is usually furniture they want, as opposed to what they really need. Then they try to fit it in what ever space they can in their current home. Often when they buy a home, they know they will leave eventually. That alone can undermine their efforts to make their current abode really work, decor wise . Entertainment centers that can breakdown for a move make always sense. Easily moved shelves with cubbies in the kids rooms work really well. Let them play grown up and decide which toys they want to donate. Then make a game of sorting the toys in their cubbies. Gotta train the kids to play with only one cubby at a time. They need some serious organization. Their life is full of stress and uncertainty, and a chaotic home just adds to it. Cubbies, cubbies, cubbies. Lovely family, great kids, I wish them all the best.

3 Bedrooms, a huge livingroom, 2 bathrooms, a garden... More space means not automatically happier! Their solution: give the kids all they want, buy a bigger house and you are good parents.... I don't think so! The problem is: dad is (nearly) never at home (ok, changing a job isn't easy) and mom is working (too much to clean the house an learn the kids to declutter their room every day?). I don't know the interest of their mortgage, but with the low price for the house, they don't need a double income. Why is she working? Clean the house, give 50% of the toys to poor people, play with your kids, educate them and be happy with the most important you have: your kids. Mom will be happier, she is a good mom and she don't need a bigger house.

Hate to say it, but you're right. She can work, but it can be much shorter hours. Just while kids are in school, and only if she wants. There was a study done of couples, and it was found that the happiest couples were where one half worked steady hours, and the other half either didn't work, or worked just part time or flex-time and was available for various family needs. Didn't matter whether it was mom or dad. That seemed to strike a balance.

The built in for the TV looks weird with that "pennisula" for its pedestal. It would have looked better and provided more storage had the entire middle section at the same width as that pennisula.

I think Season 3 isn't as good as Season 1. The format change. The location change. Using "potential buyers" to walk thru and criticize the property, ughhh. These home sellers are typically unorganized. Most of the changes seem to be clutter/interior decorating, heavy staging. Love Sophie and Anthony. Wish Season 1 format would come back with a show reboot.

Isn't it supposed the other way around - a kid asking the parents if she could have her room painted pink, not the parents begging and making promises of future perks to the kid? Those children are overindulged, and instead of being worried about it the parents appear to be PROUD of the slavery they live in. As so many other people said - the house is more than adequate for the family of 4, and it is plain that the problem is the family not the square footage.

I think the longer a house is on the market, the lazier you could get about cleaning up for a viewing. But I do think this mess was exaggerated for the show. It's not that the kids didn't really make those messes, but I highly doubt the parents would let them leave those messes for a showing. But both of the kids' rooms looked like even when everything was cleaned up there wasn't enough storage for how much they had so they would have had a lot of crap stacked by the walls and such. It still would have looked bad even if they hadn't left the mess out on the middle of the floor for effect on the show. I agree that a bigger house, if they don't learn to purge, is just going to be a bigger mess.
