Unserviceable? I disassembled a Timex from the 60's (so you dont have to)

I finally mustered the courage to rip apart a watch, so I started with this cheap secondhand Timex unit from Etsy. This was basically a 17 dollar education in how watches work. I'm pretty excited to show yall what I learned!

This would probably have been the easiest to get running if you got some advise first. Only the brave take them all the way apart LOL. After you took the clutch assembly off (3 gears on a bridge ) you should have stopped. Soak the whole thing in Zippo lighter fluid, dry then oil. As for being shock proof I dropped on on the hardwood floor the other day with no ill effects. They are tanks compared to Swiss movements.

Good on ya! Keep at it. It's all about doing what you enjoy. Just yesterday I did a 1971 Timex because it had an amazing dial but no way I would have taken the movement apart. Just soaked it in solvent and re oiled. Runs now, like crap, but looks amazing. Don't ever take them apart. Experiment next time on a real watch. Save the good Timex cases and dials u like and drop in a doner movement. Throw on a new strap and enjoy.

Disassambly was not needed, only oiling the axes and give it a few moments. Then a gentle tap on the spring and every twist it went a bit further. I have made a Timex Mercury from the sixties back in service this way.

Loved this - I took apart my first Timex yesterday and had very similar reactions and basically gave up on reassembly. Total nightmare. Reassuring to see a fellow explorer on the same path

The new Timex watches are so different. The use Myiota and Chinese movements for their mechanical and automatic watches. In the American documents they use a really nice swiss quartz movement.

cleaning instructions: is it wound and ticks for several seconds? great its about to run. try 1/2 hour of shaking it. dont remove the winder. dont disassemble the movement. dont bend the inertial spring. probably not broken. watch the propeller. put 1/4 drop of oil on the movement case. put movement in a cap. put 8 drops of gasoline in the plastic bottle cap. see the escapement propeller run under gas and oil. the escapement wheel runs a bit slower so the gear train can move forward in sync. blow away from inertial spring. press forward if necessary. usually clockwise. let dry and maybe run fast at first. put back on. try practicing with a broken EURO watch. look at tiny rocks in the step up gear train. try drilling a .1 mm hole in the EURO wheel.

The dials look cool . If your into watch modding why not mod it and install a seiko movement .

I bought a timex marlin from 1969 and it doesnt work, I'd like to convert it to a automatic or quartz does anyone have any advice on what i should put in it? Id like to stick with timex movements

I think when you work on some movements of reasonable quality, you'll gain confidence. You've already worked on perhaps the most difficult watch in the world, as the Timex was never meant to be disassembled for service, just thrown in the trash can.

And I Unsubscribe the second I realize you destroyed a perfectly good time Max and talk smack about it. I got 14 of these things and they are better than all mother watches. They are so amazing. They look beautiful and they keep perfect time you’re just amazing one out of 20 Timex watches still works but if you can find one that works is the best watch you’ll ever have have.
