A few things I can remember about the Charlie Caillou thing: It was on a separate PBS channel but it did air at the same time as another PBS channel. It was the same show with the same actors and possibly the same episode. It could very likely have had another difference in the form of it being the audio description version; those versions of channels/shows where an audio narrator describes what's happening as it does. It seemingly had nothing to do with avoiding copyrights, and it has nothing to do with another cartoon than Caillou. I'm personally convinced it was the result of a process of localizing the foreign name for a Western audience.

I don't imagine the Caillou Charlie episode exists. The Caillou cartoon was based on a series of children's books, I don't imagine they'd create a cartoon based on a pre-existing series of books and then change the name of the main character, even if it was just for a test pilot or something. Seems unrealistic to me unless it was some dub created locally to get around copyright with PBS.
@theravenpirate47442 жыл бұрын
Yeah I remember watching a french dub here in Canada of Caillou where he had a different name and it was the only program on the channel that was constantly set to Described Video mode with a narrator, but I don't understand how there could be an english version where only the name is changed. It would almost be more believable with more differences.
@mattwolf76982 жыл бұрын
I don't see how a name change would suddenly not make there be a copyright issue, it's still literally the same show apart from the name.

This is actually really similar to something that happened in TVO in Canada. Theres some British cartoon called "Little Charley Bear" (at least I think it's british). When it aired in Canada on TVO, it was changed to "Little Wilfey Bear". Which is really strange. But if you look deep enough, you actually can find the Wilfey version on KZbin in low quality. And the change is exactly like this thread, it was all redubbed with the exact same actors to say Wilfey.

I'm leaning towards the Charlie/Caillou thing being bullshit but I can think of one reason such a change would have been proposed, had a few episodes made, and accidentally released. If OP's timeline matches with the early and mid 2000's (especially 2003-2006), it was 1) the heyday of taking out foreign references in anime and other imported cartoons, even if having a French name is hardly uncommon even in the US, and 2) when stupid shit like changing french fries to "freedom fries" was going on due to France's opposition to invading Iraq. Since PBS is federally funded, there could have been talks to toe the line lest they get another funding cut that ultimately didn't get adopted.

The Charlie thing doesn't track for me. If it's not a test dub, I don't see any reason for it existing. Only thing I can see is that they probably intended to sell the series to syndication as a back-up if PBS passed on it and they had to give it less of a French Canadian name, and somehow those test episodes got mixed into one station's master tapes. I'm getting "Berenstein Bears" vibes from this.

I'm still looking for an animated segment from a late night horror host in San Jose. I made mention of it on a closing logo wiki but apparently they mistook me for some guy that trolled their website, lol. I don't recall if it was a "closing logo" per say, but it always did close out the show. It was those 90's horror hosts that would play old bad b-movie horrors from the70s and 60s or farther back, sometimes with riffs on them MST3K-style; one night while he was riffing on Jack Nicholson/Boris Karloff's "The Terror" the show had this weird crude animation where some headless horseman would ride off the production logo with some jank SFX. It's not "Leap Off Productions" but was a pretty amusing parody of some kind with it. I'm not making it up 'cause I saw this as a kid in the very early 90's and kinda kicked off my fondness for closing logo stuff. It's really nothing special but I'd be amazed if someone who knew what I was talking about would help me find it.
