Unfortumatly ... you are spot on. As a shotokan dan soo many learned from instructors who didn't have a clue... Many senoir dans within shotokan (and I'm talking about Japanese dans too...) don't know... and what is sad is that they "don't know that they don't know"... However, there has been a huge resurgance in bunkai within our ranks ... so lets see what time will tell.

I totally agree about the speed and precision, but I guess I'm not much of a tournament karate fan. I think it doesn't flow as in traditional karate practice. And when you say that kata and kumite don't translate to one another; again, from a traditional point of view, they certainly do. Kata trains the muscles and muscle memory so that when faced with a fight situation, i.e., kumite, the karateka reacts spontaneously without thinking. But again, you're right that this guy is GOOD.

If you feel kata is not Karate, you need to find a true sensei. Kata is not a fight against an imaginary opponent, kata is the fundamental building block of Karate. Kata teaches you everything, the techniques, the timing, the muscle control, and the focus needed to truly claim you are a Karateka. If all you ever do are basic drills and fighting, you are studying kickboxing, not Karate.

You WKF folks have no idea of the history of Shotokan karate. Unsu was a Chinese kata that was brought back by Nakayama during his time with the Japanese Army during the Occupation of China. This is not one of Funakoshi's original shotokan katas. The man who made this kata famous was NOT Milon, but Mikio Yahara of Japan.
@GainghisKhan12 жыл бұрын
Not to seem rude, but i think he meant that rarely can anyone be in that level in both kata and kumite. World champions train (for kata) for 1-2 hrs basics, 1.5 hrs drills, plyometrics, etc., and about an hour for each kata. if someone needed 5 kata for a tournament, to be at this level he would train 8 hours, for just 1 kata. and that is only kata training, think of that and kumite training.

I totally agree with you. There's no one better. But, i have to disagree with the last idea you posted. Kumite, Kata and every training MUST have the same idea. That's how karate was born, and that spirit shouldn't disappear. Always remember that, IT IS a MARTIAL ART, and not a sport. Kata was THE way to study the techniques for the last real application. So Kata, prepares you to the real Kumite. They have the same spirit. Oss

Don't lump me into the same category as the people who are confused over Unsu's origins. I said that Milon DID NOT create Unsu, that is all. I know Yahara Sensei made Unsu famous. To him, Unsu was his life. That came straight out of Yahara Sensei's mouth. And for the record, I am not WKF. I don't even know why you would think that. And I don't mean to imply that WKF is a bad organization. I have had no interaction whatsoever with them.
@siskozz414312 жыл бұрын
@Microslayer66 there is no intention of fight, these are only well done moves. Karate has an other concept of fight: kata is a fight with immaginary opponents. his kata dont remind me any idea of fight. i say it another time: these are only well done moves

AS a shotokan karateka (long time one at that.....) this kata performance was awsome....hopefully he had mastered the bunkai of the kata too...... if not then he was just a really good dancer...
@davidwate605712 жыл бұрын
I agree with your comments about his timing and intensity. But kata and kumite are not mutually exclusive. Kata is SUPPOSED to be where you learn to kumite, there is a reason kata has been around as long as it has, back when Karate was young they had no need "dance" to see who was best, kata is HOW YOU LEARN.
