So in the last four Corona diaries videos, there have been four very dangerous situations, in which the skier / boarder could easily have been killed. I understand this is extreme skiing, and that risk is part of the game, but I hope people are not encouraged to think this is normal ski touring. You don't get too many chances at getting buried or tomahawking down a couloir.

I agree with Will Synnott. I think this video is a little irresponsible. Basic Level 1 Avi training tells you that shooting cracks are clear high instability/danger indicators (as you noted). I know you guys are super smart (there aren't many high level athletes that aren't) and experienced. It seems you managed to escape injury in this situation the same way most get through these - luck. That's a bad thing to rely on. A more honest take on backcountry risks are the videos with Nate Wallace in Chamonix (Human Factor) and the new movie by Patagonia - "Solving for Z". I love outdoor adventure but here's an analogy to your trip shown here: I'm going hiking in grizzly country: 1) see posting there is a bear in the area that has charged people - go anyway 2) see fresh steaming bear scat, keep going 3) see fresh tracks in mud, both big and small; realize you forgot your bear spray - oh well, keep going 4 see fresh digging, keep going 5) crest the ridgeline, see a mother with cubs in the alpine meadow; they are upwind; summit so close, keep going Two possible outcomes: get mauled - shouldn't a been there! don't get mauled - shouldn't a been there! You say the person watching these videos will be able to critically assess it, I disagree. Living here in Nelson BC, lots of youth go "sidecountry" without proper preparation. All guys know when you're a teenager/early twenties with some buddies you end up doing dumb shit. Some of those dudes are going to watch this video and think "shooting cracks, keep going, get a sick line!" Apparently with Covid backcountry gear sales have been at a record high this year. How many of those people will have the training/experience to go with it? I guess we'll find out as the season progresses. I like your skiing and the vids btw. And seeing your local terrain is pretty awesome.

This is exactly what I was thinking as I watched the video. It shows a complete lack of respect for how dangerous ski-touring can be. I think the "sponsors" really should be rethinking whether they want to promote content like this.

@@gaventang4549 @E- Muny Agreed... It just gives millions of young, inexperienced, impressionable, gungho thrillseekers the false security that taking MULTIPLE obvious risks like this will always "turn out okay, no worries"! Coming soon: (and everyone will justify it by saying...) "At least they died doing what they loved". @bbfoto72483 жыл бұрын
@@ivanmoen9982 Now you're just being silly. You can ALWAYS get out and have fun and adventure, but still be SAFE and LIVE to do it another day. But too many these days have no sense of social responsiblity and are glorifing extremism and *senseless* risk taking just to "rack up KZbin views" in order to lure sponsors/advertisers and MAKE MONEY. I have no problems with someone trying to make a living from their skills and craft, but, we're all responsible for the influence of other's actions to some degree whether we admit it or not. I'm not saying the content creators are directly responsible for anyone's peril. But videos like these will NO DOUBT "inspire" many others to take similar risks with MUCH less hesitation, consideration, or honest reasoning. Once you've actually pulled a few dead bodies out of the ice and snow and see the reality of death stare you in the face by people who obviously took similar risks (but in even less "sketchy" conditions), get back to me. Hopefully it's never one of your personal friends or family members. Survival of the fittest. Live long and prosper, mate! Cheers.

I am missing some kind of acknowledgement about all the poor decisions that you took that day. Even if you feel that you are taking controlled risks some unexperienced skiers may think that it is not dangerous to follow some of the patterns you did here, as: - Skiing steep terrain without helmet. Especially while descending a couloir. - Not bring crampons/piolet with you and still continue in dubious terrain. - Continue with your journey even detecting clear avalanche prone terrain. @nikolai don’t you think it’s a bit problematic for some of your viewers, to keep posting videos like this that glorify you essentially knowingly dropping into a line you think will slide?
@Nikolai_Schirmer4 жыл бұрын
I get where you're coming from, and I had plenty of debates about this with Vegard prior to publishing. Essentially my take on it is that this could happen in any of the runs that I ski. There is always some risk of a slide no matter how good you've been at assessing the snow. So I think not showing it would give the impression that avalanches never happen in the lines I ride, which I think would be even more problematic.
@willskiing4 жыл бұрын
@@Nikolai_Schirmer thanks for your response, I get where you’re coming from as well. But we’re talking about two separate issues here that shouldn’t be conflated: publicizing the prevalence/gravity of avalanches versus publicizing the right type of decisionmaking to avoid them. I think it is possible to convey to viewers that avalanches do happen, are dangerous, and should be avoided, without making it seem “cool” to nonetheless drop into a line you know is not safe and come out lucky. The two should go hand in hand but your account glorifies bad decisionmaking - just look at the titles of your recent videos. I’ve made bad decisions myself and skied lines I shouldn’t have, and gotten lucky. But I am ashamed, not proud of this, something that the broader ski community emphasizes which KZbin does not, since it’s about views and not safety. I totally get it, this perspective undermines the draw of a lot of your content, but I simply think it’s unethical to make it seem like the decisions you made in this video were sound. It’s possible to take risks and make entertaining videos while being honest about when you cross the line. At least at the end of the video acknowledge where you went wrong and how you can improve next time. I understand we didn’t see all the mitigation that went on behind the scenes - but why not? Thoughts?
@Nikolai_Schirmer4 жыл бұрын
@@willskiing Hmm. Thinking here. I'm not sure where you get the impression that I think avalanches are cool. And how I was not honest about crossing the line here, or that I'm not ashamed of my screw ups. Titles are for clicks, not to look cool. If anything it's uncool to write those titles, I'd much rather go for something abstract and indirect instead of just blurting out the most dramatic thing that happened in the video. Furthermore, following your reasoning one would have to assume all the horror Joe Simpson goes through in Touching the Void is something he found "cool". Conveying your experience in a way that entertains the viewer/listener/reader is not the same thing as saying the experience should be sought after. I think we should trust that the audience aren't complete idiots. Hope you have a good winter Will :-)
@chidofu49224 жыл бұрын
@@Nikolai_Schirmer Agree. I didn't get the impression you were glorifying or recommending that anyone else do this. You were showing the pucker that resulted from being somewhat overexuberant about skiing a line. We have all been there and this is a good reminder of what can happen. For someone like me who has been pretty risk averse and not experienced many avalanches it is also quite informative to see how it develops from the skiers perspective. People with enough focus and drive to undertake ski mountaineering are capable of processing videos showing good, bad and marginal decision making and reaching their own conclusions about how they will handle a similar situation.

There was once a thing here in the US called personal responsibility and to take a little further parental responsibility. Where in the title of this video does it say “how to” or “what not to do”, no where, this is an entertainment video with excellent content. Viewers should take their own experiences or lack there of and learn as they see fit or just watch for the entertainment. Do any of you get all bent out of shape on Alex Honnold because some adult or kid goes rock climbing without a rope and gets killed? We saw 13 minutes of what i would assume was a long day, therefore there were many conversations that Nikolai had with his partner regarding the conditions and their choices they made. It is not their responsibility to turn this into a teaching video. Make your own choices and teach your kids good choices and don’t worry about what someone else is doing. Those that are complaining, do you also yell at the person not wearing a mask, even if they are within local guidelines to not wear one. Don’t assume your choice, and your opinion is good for everyone, let everyone make their own decisions. I’ve been climbing and BC skiing for 30 years, but i have my experiences and i make my choices based on my thought, not what i see in a video. Great video, as all of Nikolai’s content is.
