Hello and thanks for the comment and suggestion. I had never heard of DuBois or seen his work so I'm particularly grateful for the name, and his work looks fascinating. Even limiting the eligibility I've still got more to do than I've done already. Good video yet again, Pete! You may recall that well into the '70s, photo indications and storyboards for ad agencies were done in pastel ("Nupastel" was the brand I used) before markers came along, I guess in the '80s. I became pretty accomplished in both, and later on the computer, by far the least messy of them all! All that spraying with fixative over chalk was bad news!
@petebeard

Hello again and thanks as usual for the comment. This nuastel thing isn;t known to me - maybe it's down to different coubtries and their favoured methods. I remember (only just) that I started work in 1973 and for what we called 'visuals' or 'roughs'and storyboarding mthe use of markers was common. I suppose it's all cave painting compared to what's possible now.

Thank you Kevin for that bit of reality about the "good ol' days" before computers. Granted, computers have their own headaches. @@petebeard I thought I sent you the link to Allan Holtz' Strippers Guide with the chronical list of all the illustrated AW's. On his 1936-1940 page he writes-"Some highlights of the late 1930s are the Salvador Dali covers, which attract a lot of art collector interest on eBay when they rarely show up. There's also the only American Weekly cover series by famed pin-up artist Zoe Mozert. A series on regional cooking by the great James Montgomery Flagg is a criminal waste of his great talent." The series was "Seven Types of American Girls" and ran from July 19 to August 30. Allan also has a lenghtly biography of Zoe, but with only one cover illustration, not an AW. However, these are not uncommon on the web, and I'll look around on that abominable Pininterst site and the Internet Archive and forward one or two to your email tonight. Wow that’s rather rare to find a female pinup artist! And she’s the model herself sometimes! Good for her!
@petebeard

Hello again and I'm glad you enjoyed her work. Actually she was one of three American women around that time creating pinups. The others were Pearl Frush and Joyce Ballantyne. They both appear in my women in illustration video (shameless plug). And I'm currently working on an earlier French pinup artist called Suzanne Meunier for the unsung series. Busy busy busy...

Joyce Ballantyne, "Coppertone" illustator, was also her own model. Probably, Gesmar too.

@@petebeard Suzanne Meunier would be a good Unsung Hero. Her work is very good and falls within the time frame of the Golden Age of Illustrators. Does her illustrations approach the pneumatically proportioned high standard of this channel? Vala Moro? Same criteria ... . v .

I’m trying to find information on a fashion illustrator who I "think" was "Antonio B…" He had illustrations in the New Yorker and another. His illustrations were gorgeous and amazingly detailed because he painted them on a very large canvas. I wish I knew more about him. I home you can figure out this riddle and talk about him.

I have a Zoe Mozert print from back in the day entitled "Dream Girl"- it's the same as the one in the "Irresistible" ad! Also Pete, please do a piece that includes Tamara De Lempicka- I have one of her prints (as a poster) and I know she was quite the lady on several counts!
@petebeard
@petebeard 3 жыл бұрын
Hello and thanks for the comment. Mozert seems to be the star of the show in this video judging by viewer's comments. And thanks for the suggestion of Lempicka whose work I like too. But the bad news is she wasn't actually an illustrator, but a fine artist, and other than mentioning art in passing when it's relevant I stick to the subject I know and love best, and that's illustration. Sorry to disappoint.

Hello and thanks a lot for Flavio Colin. I had never come across his work before and you're right - I really like it. Unfortunately he was born way too late for inclusion in the unsung series - cut off year is 1910. But I have bookmarked him and he would fit perfectly into my planned ;between the lines 2' video.

@@gerry343 Hi again, but it's not looking good, I'm sorry to say. Virtually every available usable image by him is created as art, either painted or woodcut . And that puts him outside my reach. It's particularly annoying because it's recorded that he illustrated quite a number of books, mostly limited editions, but there is apparently no evidence of any of it. I thought I'd let you know so you don't expect his appearance in the series. Not the first or last time this has happened

It's a shame that Gesmar addiction cut his life short because he was really skilled for his age, but then again if that hilarious story about him, the pistol and the toilet cistern is true maybe he wasn't quite there in his head.

75 full videos of unsung illustrators, many of whom experienced penury. You hear of the sweat-shop conditions of manga and anime studios today. Yet others make millions by throwing a ball through a hoop, knocking one into a cup sunk in a lawn, or carrying one over a chalk line. Is the creation of beauty from marks on a surface such a mundane ability? It's rather sad, in a way. EDIT: Well, those in this video seemed to have done well, for themselves, even if one was self-destructive.

Hello and many thanks for your recent favourable comments and observations about the channel content. Regarding the apparent ease with which sporty types make a fortune it does send my blood pressure into uncharted territory, but I try to be philosophical. As you rightly observe some (if only a few) did make a fortune from their images. And some still do. Sadly not me...
