William Denslow, Achille Mauzan, HarrySteele Savage and Jean Bruller are the quartet of forgotten illustrators in this instalment. They are all worthy of greater exposure but I hope there's at least one who resonates with you.

Thanks very much. Not as underrrated as I used to be for which I am very grateful.

Another fascinating selection of superb illustrators. Again, I learned a lot on this wonderful channel. Not just that buying a private island and juggling three sets of alimony payments is above and beyond for even very talented, successful artists! Thank you for another super episode.

Hi and yes Mr. Denslow certainly had a chaotic ride. Like many he was the architect of his own downfall, unfortunately. Glad you enjoyed yet another in the series.

Hi Pete.... here's a prime example of artists who can and cannot handle fame and fortune, Mauzan versus Denslow. It's a real shame when you see this happen, yet it applies to any fortune someone may earn or receive, just look at today's lottery winners, same problems. Another good video, thank you.

Thanks a lot. I can't imagine the amount of money Denslow must have made - and lost. Your point is very well made. Rock music has plenty of similar casualties.

Denslow had quite the talent. I've always had a soft spot for ''ligne claire'' having grown up on the Tintin and Asterix series. Savage was a new discovery. As usual, many thanks !!

Achille Mauzons work was so unique. His overpronounced characters were amusing, silly & over the top. His choices for color combinations was also very different from most. The only other illutrators to use similar style of color/textures were the illustrators for Wacky Packages of Topps Cards in the 1970's. I would not doubt if Achilles was an influence.
@petebeard2 жыл бұрын
Hello and yes its tricky wondering about influence and whether it's coincidence or not. The only time I usually say it's the case is when the illustrator in question actually says so themselves.
@capuchinosofia477111 ай бұрын
woah, Achille Mauzan! Indeed unkown by name here in Argentina but his Geniol illustration is still referenced today (as box populi) even though its not used anymore! Its just so classy and catchy! Thank you very much for your videos, Pete!

Hello and many thanks for your appreciation. Mauzan - like so many others - should be better remembered.

I've now watched all 32, as well as most of your other series and one-offs. What would be really neat is a sort of index mentioning which video(s) each illustrator appears in. Sometimes I have a wish to revisit your coverage of a certain illustrator, but cannot recall the relevant video.
@petebeard4 жыл бұрын
Hi and thanks for your dedication. A few thousand more like you wouldn't be a bad thing. Regarding an index there are quite a few obstacles. I'm not even half way through the list of illustrators yet to appear so any index I created now would soon be obsolete. It only makes sense when (and if) I ever get to the end. I'm fairly sure I've retrospectively added a list of illustrators in the description box (in most cases at least) so you could try copy/pasting them into a document.

Hello and thanks for the comment. Sadly in many cases information and visual material can be pretty thin on the ground.

Keep it up Pete! Curious, where do you dig up all this information?

Hi and the answer to your question isn't straightforward. It's a combination of the following... A reasonably large collection of books, many of which are now falling apart just like me. And an accumulated knowledge of illustrators I seem to have acquired somewher along the line mainly from university libraries I think. And that sort of feeds into the web where I follow leads like a pig looking for truffles. And I'm ashamed to realise how little I actually did know before I began this excavation.

Hello again and you certainly seem to be getting through the back catalogue at quite a pace. And I'm really pleased you seem to be finding plenty of illustrators you particularlly like. I must confess your reference to Remington had me confused. I couldn't remember featuring him and I was equally surprised it was something that had delighted your young daughter. But of course I checked the video and it is in fact Richardson. Makes much more sense...

Greetings! Denslow illustrated "An Arkansas Planter" in 1896 (see Met Mus of Art), and designed the cover for "Amber Glints" in 1897 (by his mother-in-law, named, simply, "Amber") as well as a poster for the CHICAGO TIMES-HERALD in 1895 (held by the Library of Congress)
@petebeard3 жыл бұрын
Hi and thanks for spotting these. I did know about the Arkansas Planter but decided not to mention it aI could find no images with good enough resolution. I didn't know about the others though. Generally if I can't provide visual evidence I don't mention the work, and so you are sure to find other examples of similar oversights.

The Vercors became the scene of a famous conflict between the Resistance and the occupiers. Strictly the C is hard, no cedilla which would soften it.
@petebeard3 жыл бұрын
Funnily enough, I checked and according to three dfferent online sources my pronunciation is correct. I really don't mind being put right when I make a hash of foreign languages but this wasn't such an occasion. I'll await your apology when you've checked your information. The cedilla thing is nonsense - what abour c'est?
@jmtubbs16393 жыл бұрын
Well I perhaps I hadn't ever heard a Frenchman saying it, and I agree there are exceptions.

Illustrators inking away on a private islands just a thing that happens sometimes
@petebeard4 жыл бұрын
It's sickening how much money some of these illustrators earned (and lost). I didn't even mention the yacht ( named Dorothy) he also moored on his island for occasional jaunts around Bermuda's islands.

Marvelous.. love that. Thanks !!! And, just for information, About "Vercors" (which is a french mountain with a important resistance history ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vercors_Massif )), you have to prononce the "c" as if it was a "k".
