7:22 Aparently, acording to the designer, the car was axed because the Manager thought "the time has passed for the cars made with hammers". As for the engine, I wasn't able to tell if the rally version was modified or not (I really think it was), but what I 100% know is that Dacia was able to modify its cars for rallies and would get some unthinkable amounts of power out of their engines. We are talking here of well over 100 hp (instead of the regular 64 hp), they would sometimes get about 150 hp out of them (without turbo's). So even if the MD87 had a regular 1.4 engine, it would've been just a matter of time until they modified the hell out of it.

I'm an MR2 enthusiast/collector & I must admit on some of those pics tose rear lights look a bit like AW11 MR2 :) PS the rally version looks like poor man's Lancia 037 xD unknown/old/crap cars are the best to watch/read about.

I’ve thought for a while that even though Dacia is currently doing quite well for themselves it’s time they did something a little less conservative, for instance making a hot hatch or entering the Duster in the Dakar, just a thought though.

Btw, a suggestion for an Unsung Heroes episode, how about the Corvette ZR-12? I only recently, actually today heard about it for the first time. It was basically GM´s answer to the Viper, a Corvette with a 10-liter V12 engine. They didn´t have to make it because ZR-1 was already faster I guess, but interesting concept. I think only one was built, it´s in the Corvette museum.

The first generation Toyota MR2 actually used a front axle assembly as it's rear axle to save on engineering too.
