The Russian army is not the so called 2nd strongest army in the world as of 2025, its an army that suffered 800K casualties in 3 years of war, which so far has taken an area the size of the state of Pennsyvania, or 20 percent of Ukraine, and is struggling to take more and make the Ukrainains surrender who are still far from quitting and still fighting very hard. and a Russian army that 60 percent of its artillery ammo is sourced from North Korea and 30 percent of its missles also from North Korea. an Army which has to beg the North Koreans for help as well as begging the Taliban, Yemeni Houthis and Africans for volunteers hahahahah, a Russian gov and propogandists who keep on insisting that its not Ukrainians they are fighting but NATO and the USA, hahhahah. Russia is so done. with a pathetic Russian gov and army, , it is so done. The casualty rate is only an issue if they are trying to avoid conscription. If they opt for conscription then they have millions more men to fight. In WW1 France (about the same population as Ukraine now) had 4000 casualties per day for 4 years and was still fighting at the end (and won). Russia has a larger population, much more money in the bank (OK, diminishing, but still very substantial), a big arms industry and some support from China and elsewhere. So they can continue to fight, even inefficiently. The issues are that 1) their gains are pathetic and not worth the cost, and 2) their objective of political control over Ukraine cannot be won, and 3) other risks are now increasing again (internal politics, foreign support for Ukraine, China getting cold feet). It's now about saving face, and appearing to come out with gains in the Donbas, which for Putin's continued survival is important. They may have one last push in spring, but when that fails they may be open to talks. We in the west need to keep the pressure on and help Ukraine more.

Wait, so the Russian economy is missing a million workers, but if a few hundred soldiers return home then we expect there not to be enough jobs?
@mcebabdsКүн бұрын
What jobs do you want them to take. Even if the war ended now, doesn't mean sanctions are lifted, and most of the western companies are gone. Their biggest industry (gas and oil) gone, They have a war industry, which is useless when the war ends. They have self-destructed completely.
@kristianharder9311Күн бұрын
@mcebabds I think you misunderstood the point I was trying to make. The expert in this interview says that the Russian economy is suffering from a huge lack of workers right now because they are all fighting or dead. He also says that when the survivors return there won't be enough jobs for them. Of course there are viable scenarios where both statements can be true (thinking of required training etc), but just making those two statements in the same interview without explaining how this is not a contradiction is not satisfactory.

Russia desperately wants to demobilize its entire military. There are MILLIONS of workers brought into Russia's defense industry to make artillery shells, refurbish tanks, provide food, fuel, etc to the soldiers. All of these people are being paid a premium. Also, Russia is paying a premium to get Western components off of black markets so they can make thousands of drones. Black markets are way more expensive. Buying what is for Russia very expensive computer chips so they can use them in drones and blow them up is insanely costly. For every front-line soldier there are up to ten supporting (varies between about 3 to 10 depending on if the army is more like a North Korea meat wave or high-tech US). For every soldier in the war there are multiple civilians supporting by making bullets, bombs, tanks, etc. There would be half a million soldiers returning home as Russia's military has expanded by about this much in sustained manpower PLUS about 3 to 4 million jobs lost in Russian industries that were supporting the war effort. Even a single unguided "dumb" artillery round is $1,000 and Russia has fired millions of those. Drones, bombs, maintenance on heavily used tanks, planes, etc, small arms rounds (about $1 per round and billions of them have been fired in this war), etc, etc, etc. Someone has to make all of this stuff. Wars are ridiculously expensive, and Russia has spent the last four years mobilizing its economy for it (Putin started upping production for war before the war even started). Mobilized economies start to drag a country down after about 3 or 4 years. This even happened to the US in WWII that went into high inflation and GDP contraction just after the war. 400,000 or 1,000,000 casualties on the front aren't going to exhaust Ukraine or Russia. However, all the strain from a mobilized economy WILL cause problems and it always does. Ukraine at least gets lots of support for its economy and military industry.
@KJSvitko20 сағат бұрын
Europe needs to ramp up support for Ukraine and Nato. The UK, Europe, Germany and the rest of the world have been too slow to transition to wind and solar energy combined with battery storage and all electric vehicles. Wind and solar energy do not need to be imported and can be produced locally in any country. Battery storage is key for base load power. Europe needs to provide more incentives for homes and businesses to install electric heat pumps and get rid of old polluting gas and oil boilers. The move to electric vehicles will also be sped up. There is no good reason to help fund Putin's war by buying oil, gas and coal from Russia. There is a Climate Crisis making weather events more extreme. Time to switch to renewable energy. The future is renewables. They are safer, cleaner and cheaper than fossil fuels. It is time for governments to end fossil fuels industry subsidies.
@kappenmann1218 сағат бұрын
To the first part I agree. But renewables won‘t be cheaper than fossil fuels in the next thirty years. Especially when you want 100% green and therefore have to store it for the winter. The Energy tranition is the reason why Europe is that weak. Wrong priorities

A very wrong approach is the issue of decisions from an ideological perspective. And human emotions do not always go hand in hand with reason, most often they do not. Usually it is so that too many civilians die and the benefits are not always adequate to the intended ones. There are many more to list... Current wars show this. The current war between Israel and Hamas, civilian deaths are definitely above the norm and on both sides. USA - Afghanistan in 2001, Stalin murdered his command and then was unable to effectively fight German soldiers. Or of course the current Russian-Ukrainian war. The effect will be the same as always, losses in many dimensions will be above the norm. To be more precise, if this war had not happened, they would have come out better. But often people are like that, at first it seems like a reasonable decision and when push comes to shove, it would be better if this war had not happened at all. The Kremlin has made a decision about this war, but the effect will be different from the intended one, after this war, as it is estimated, the crises in the Russian Federation will be as big as several times harder than 1991 in Russia. Russia and Ukraine follow different strategies. Russia sacrifices galore of people and equipment to increasingly occupy Ukraine from West to East. Russia doesn't care about sustainability. They also apparently have no plan what to do once they would have reached their objective. Russia will have lost a big chunk of their population, their geopolitical dominance (because no weapons will be left), and their economic basis because all export ties will be severed and they produce near to nothing themselves. Ukraine on the other hand "sells" peacemeal of turf for Russian lives avoiding own casualties as much as possible. At the same time, Ukraine tries to destroy Russia's economic foundation by taking out hydrocarbon facilities and weapon's production. At the same time Ukraine sustains exchange and communication with the West. Economically, Ukraine could fall back on Western resources at least for some time. Ukraine also tackles Russia's international influence as we see now in Syria or the year before by assaults on Wagner detachments in Africa. Ukraine tries to inflict long lasting damage on the living conditions in Russia and thereby to provoke uprising within Russia which finally would end toppling the "Tsar". For Russia, ideally the war would end at the Polish border of Ukraine. For Ukraine, ideally the war would end in Kremlin.

Ukraine casualty rate is also unsustainable unless they can conscript younger, can recruit more foreign volunteers or the West can send troops. The West needs to copy the French and Polish model of training overseas Ukrainians as NATO standard battalions, equip them as NATO battalions and Ukraine needs to keep them together as fighting units and not cannibalism to fill front line holes.
@henripoiters561Күн бұрын
The analysis presented here is full of sweeping generalizations and speculative claims with little in-depth evidence to back them up. While it's true that the Russian casualty rate is unsustainable, this is not a revelation-it's been a known fact for a long time. The assertion that North Korean soldiers are being used as cannon fodder in wave attacks lacks direct corroboration and often relies on circumstantial evidence. The economic predictions, too, are based on assumptions that ignore the resilience of Russia's wartime economy. The focus on Putin's internal politics oversimplifies a very complex situation-his real concern may lie in more immediate military and strategic dilemmas, rather than external pressures like Trump’s potential policy shift. The analysis needs greater nuance, especially when discussing military tactics, economics, and geopolitics.

Why is it unsustainable, look at british and french daily lossses during WW1 and WW2 ? Both countries still exists, do they daily complain about the losses in WW1 and WW2 that the war was unsustainable ? No , the population today has forgotten to think about it. Sustainable is a media term and propaganda. Check out if the life and living of the average russian is changing llike Food rations. The british, french, germans were used to food rations during the war times ... but nothing has happened so far in russia. They produce goods and raw materials they can sell to 2/3 of the worlds population - only 2 or 3 dozen western countries are not willing to buy from the russians ... so the russians sells that to the indians and the british buy from their former colony the cheap russian oil as it has been gained from an indian dwell, nice indian oil out of nowhere and cheaper than buying from china or arabic countries.

It’s not just that the National Wealth Fund is declining in value. The Russian NWF doesn’t hold globally tradable currencies. A wartime economy can lift a country’s manufacturing productivity and GDP in the short-term but at the expense of other key sectors. Ukraine is targeting Russia’s oil production capacity, wherein, oil export income is required to top-up the Russian NWF. Rural Russia might accept a subsistence economy, but Moscow and St Petersburg under economic decline might not be so compliant.

They ain't wrong in using the word, sustainable means it can be maintained for a long/indefinite time whilst unsustainable is it's unable to be maintained for a finite amount of time. 30,000 troops a month with any country forces really is unsustainable, throw in the threats of other countries, security of Russian allies and it exposed cracks in the Russian military.
