Great information, Quincy. Perhaps a discography would be beneficial for a potential student.

Presentation was relaxed and not rushed. I hope that the information can be shared with music educators/band directors and students at the beginning of their high school career and maybe more students will be ready for such a rigorous and life changing experience.

I graduate from highschool in 2 and a half years. I want to go to UNT for drum set but the stuff in the beginning looked pretty hard to play. Hope I can learn in time!

So basically If I don't also know how to play vibraphone then I can't audition?
@markfordmusic3 жыл бұрын
No, UNT requires that incoming Jazz Studies Percussion Majors have a working knowledge of the keyboard, and harmonic and melodic concepts. The best way for us to hear you display these skills is through a short performance on a percussion keyboard instrument (or piano) in addition to your drum set and snare drum audition. These keyboard skills are essential to ensure your success in theory/aural skills and improvisation classes.

This video isn't bad by any means, but I will say that it is a lot less explicit about the actual musical requirements than say the UNT concert snare drum audition video, which goes through the exacting requirements, rather than just talking about feel and touch. I don't have any students trying to audition for college this year, but if I did this would be slightly less helpful than other percussion videos that UNT put out this year... though I do understand that drum set (and probably guitar and bass) gets a lot of audition submissions from "Rock" or "Groove" players who cannot swing or read notation, which has to be infuriating.

I hear you, but the musical requirements are pretty much black and white. They’re all on the site and should be easy to follow. Most have questions on how they should present themselves and the way they should play, rather than what they should play. If you have more questions, feel free to reach out and I can try to help!
