I swear that sounded just like a Jet Engine spooling up, that alone is awesome Top marks for the destruction sparks and fire
@SeanBZA8 жыл бұрын
Has sparks just like the starter as well, just does not get past the first stage though before spooling down. Now, if Photon was given a jet turbine and "upgraded" the control box to enable stupid speed I would love to see that. I am far enough away the debris would not harm me, even if some does go into orbit. Would not do that in the living room though, unless he wants an entire house remodel in an instant.
@bucklebill28 жыл бұрын
But will the jet engine destroy itself before the house takes off? XD
@JesusisJesus7 жыл бұрын
SeanBZA - There is a theoretical speed limit of turbine blades due to the centripetal forces and speed of the blade tips creating sonic booms as they pass the speed of sound, the problem becomes one of metallurgy. Currently, turbine blades are grown as a single crystal of the metal they are made of, it is done in very strictly controlled conditions and takes an awful long time to grow a single turbine blade into a single crystal. I believe it's about a month or so. If they were made in the conventional manner, there would be many many crystals of the metal and when anything metallic breaks, it is because it separates the bonds between the crystal structure of the object, so that is why turbine blades are "grown" as a single crystal, so that there is nowhere for the turbine blade to crack. Also, jet engines actually run at much slower RPM speeds these days because they are bypass turbo-fan type engines, which is essentially a jet engine using the front turbine blades to push air around the outside of the turbine, rather than through it, meaning they can run at 1/10th of the speed, use MUCH less fuel, much less wear and tear, and provide more power than a jet engine that creates thrust from the air and fuel being burned and thrust out the back of the turbine. Short answer: It can't be done, the blades would detatch well before any exciting speed was attained, even IF you could jam enough air and fuel into the thing..........

The armatures are surprisingly close to arcing at 240 V. Second motor started at 260!
@Electroblud8 жыл бұрын
That's not how it works. The arcing is caused by the high speed of rotation (the "naked" motor was run without any load after all). This breaks the current through the windings very abruptly, causing a voltage spike because of the self-induction (probably a few thousand Volts). That's what causes the arcing.
@ChumpusRex8 жыл бұрын
The 2nd motor was unloaded, so would have been overspeeding massively. These motors are designed to run with the load of the impeller.
@OfficeMackerel8 жыл бұрын
+ChumpusRex actually the second motor looks like one from a Dyson upright, the spindle actually is the driveshaft of the brush bar pulley, while the impeller actually forms part of the motor itself. So you're not entirely wrong.

I think it's because there's no mechanical load attached to the motor, so it spins faster than normal
@AH-zw9zx6 жыл бұрын
The air intake was covered by the floor because the motor was sitting upright. The power required to drive a centrifugal fan is proportional to the air flowing through it, therefore it was running unloaded. That type of brushed motor will overspeed without a load attached, causing excessive arcing on the commutator.

Hey photonicinduction, if you have the time. get a tour around Culham Science Centre. You would bolt your load there. Two nice big Nuclear fusion reactors to get excited about. But not half as much as the power requirements to run experiments. The national grid will only allow 500 mega watts to be taken at any one time but that still isn't enough. They need 1 gigawatt. They have a direct feed from the national grid at 440 KV. So to get around it there are two 750 ton drums spun up by motors a few days before, then these are used to generate electric whilst the research is happening. The Torus reactors have a nice central transformer core wound in pure copper. none of this wire shit. proper bus bar stuff. Only needs 1kv at 2000 amps to kick off the reactor. The transformer is the primary and the secondary is the plasma at 150 million celsius. Then there are the directional coils dotted all around the outside of the Torus that take the 500 megawatts the national grid can give. Thats the JET reactor. There is also a smaller UK fusion reactor that is powered by capacitor bank in a separate building. The whole building is full with high voltage capacitors. I went for a tour around Culham this week on one of their open evenings. it's mental. you should take a peek. Maybe something you could build. lol

It was a RNAS station before. The site was originally to be set up near Cambridge university but the east of England airfields were still needed (just after WWII) hence being built near Oxford University instead. i.e. The nuclear research was always going to be built near a university, just which one and who would suffer less if an airfield was needed
