UNTIL IT'S TIME FOR YOU TO GO - BUFFY SAINTE MARIE
Perhaps best known from its hit cover version by Elvis Presley, here's the original by Canadian singer songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie. Recorded for BBC TV back in 1971 for the show 'One in Ten'.

I agree. The sound of Buffy singing stayed in my head from the first time I heard it. It's kind of like how you never forget what fingernails scratching a chalkboard sound like. It stayed in my head forever because I couldn't wrap my brain around how she had the guts to sing like that in public and how people were encouraging her. As her son Cody said in (on FB Oct.2020) ..." it only worked for my mom because of the indian identity"....And he said that no one knew she was actually Italian/English. That she died her hair black and wore dark make-up, etc "It was kind of a gimmick that became a fad and then a formula....."

I really love the lyrics "I was an oak, but now a willow and I can bend." Gorgeous imagery. My favorite cover is by a young Michael Nesmith in 1965, pre-Monkees. He kept Buffy's lyrics, singing it intimately and full of sorrow.

Hi from Canada, I awoke with this song- I went to Mr. Diamond's version, my mother's fav- I lost her last Christmas but then I had to hear the original, the writer's own heartache - pain of a love that couldn't be - many of us have been there- yes? I have to hear Mr. Nesmith's and yes I know what band he was in- wish I wasn't so old! Namaste

"exquisitely different voice" 😆 that is one way to put it! Why do you think she had to fake being Indian? She truly sucked as a musician. She sings so off key and has the goat vibrato is actually a sign of someone that can't do vibrato (and can't be bothered. Narcissists want the glory without the work).

One great singer songwriter and musician I would have loved to see perform in person! Did see Mary Travers perform in Akron, Ohio in December 1986. She smiled and said Hi to me! Sure made my evening! I was so elated! Saw Joan Baez perform on the Commons at Kent State University in August 1977! Marvelous voice and such a gifted songwriter and musician! Buffy is right up there! Very brave and very true to herself and her beliefs! Love her!

"True to herself and her beliefs"? Have you ever listened to her speak? Its all gloat and brag (and insulting native people as being too stupid, racist, uncivilized etc.) It's atrocious the things she has said. And as far as the voice..... I have to wonder if you are tone deaf (like buffy). Her own son said (Oct.5 fb 2020) the only reason it worked fro her was the black hair dye, dark make-up and faking being an Indian.

Once in a while, the raw, unrefined version of a song, sung by the original artist, is more enjoyable than a "produced" rendition. This one by Ms. Saints-Marie easily fits into that category. Rumor has it she wrote it at a time in her life when the lyrics actually spoke to her longing. I've enjoyed this song since I first heard it in 1967. I learned how to play it in 1978 but I've always enjoyed it more in 4/4 time. It feels smoother and a touch more melancholy which is how I would feel if this was my song.

It's light years above any other version

In this case, you'd be dead wrong. In 1971, elvis presley interpreted these same words, and made them LIGHT YEARS BETTER. Elvis's recording is otherworldly. Buffy, sadly, butchered her own words. She's a great writer, but lacks in the soul depth and diversity departments

@@bradhuskers - how nice of you to be so open to the opinion of others and most certainly, in your kind words about Buffy Saints-Marie, the artist who had the courage to capture the rawness and savagery of impending loneliness - HER impending loneliness - and gift it to the world.

@@BBQ1953 Learn to listen. Comprehend. Understand. Buffy's lyrics are amazing. She's a gifted poet. But many songwriters lack the soul and depth needed to take their lyrics to another dimension. Certain iconic artists, such as Ella Fitzgerald, Elvis presley, etc...etc...had that rare ability to interpret the words of another, taking those words to places the actual songwriter could never ever reach. I know this is above your limited IQ. Don't worry. I've studied music longer than you've been alive. Anyone who gives a thoughtful listen to elvis's 1971 recording of Buffy's lyrics, comes away stunned. Don't be afraid. Learn to think outside the box. Expand your limited horizons. Let the magic envelop your soul.

As others have said in so many ways it's almost impossible for any cover to beat the song writer singing their own song. A beautiful young woman pleading to her lover "Hey no strings attached just love me" As young lovers will almost certainly find out just as anyone of any real age did, demands can stifle and even kill any love that exists, long term love and relationships take a degree of understanding beyond us when we were young, that may be the grand design of things

I've just spent a couple of hours sampling every version I could find from Buffy and covers from many others. A great frustration...and undoubtedly my memory is a high-performance clean-up machine for old recordings. I don't remember the complete lack of polish that mars every effort I can find from Buffy on this song...they all have a rawness that does not appeal after all these years. Still, there is a quality that Buffy brings to it that nobody covering it matches. I am a little ashamed that my taste screams for studio production values when it looks like what we have is an authentic, unpolished performer, a girl with a guitar on her back and great talent but nobody from a record company within miles.

Wow! What a downer after hearing The New Birth version of Until It's Time For You To Go with Susaye Green singing lead.

2dasimmons Well, she is the writer, it's her song, this is the way it was conceived, the rest are covers, studio version is even better, i love this woman and her raw visceral voice, pure passion.

Certainly to each his/her own. I'm aware that Until It's Time For You To Go is Buffy's song. it's just that when I heard The New Bith's version/cover I was BLOWN AWAY. Just so beautiful and moving. WOW!

While I was not quite satisfied by this raw version from Buffy, I despise the New Birth version that you mention. We used to have a word for what those people did to it but we don't use that word any more.

It just goes to prove the old-school adage: DIFFERENT STROKES FOR DIFFERENT FOLKS is true. It also explains why black music is so popular throughout the USA and around the globe. New Birth's version is simply superb. If you despise it, that's okay. Different strokes for different folks. Be well. Good-bye.

i adore her, but i have to be honest if i may be. the vibrato in her voice on this makes it unlistenable to me. doesnt matter. she's one of my heroes

I agree. To me it sounds like her nerves got the better of her, I wouldn't even call it a vibrato, it's more of a tremolo
