As an Australian woman, l can't wrap my head around why these properties sit empty and deteriorate! I don't know if the descendents are allowed to remove the antiques etc so they can sell or share out all the good pieces with relatives. I understand that inheritance tax in most nations is insanely expensive, so l understand why people let the buildings crumble. Which in itself is very sad and in my opinion should be saved as historical examples! Once they're gone, that's it! Also those things you thought were spider eggs could be a variety of wasp nests. I mentioned Australia before as we only go back just over 200years and so the only real antiques came over with the richer new settlers and immigrants etc. Love the history of the chateaux, nice to see the furnishings etc, even if they are being ruined by decay!🦘🤔😟🥴😧

Taxes owed. Family has to all decide to sell. If one child( adult) doesn’t want to sell, none can. Property needs to be divided evenly. Or so I’ve heard.

Taxes and upkeep are cost prohibitive for them. Then possibly inheritance and no incentive to keep and maintain. Then figure in things like heat and out of reach for most.

I say the same thing. If there's no family to take over the mansion. Then they should take everything out of the house " that's sellable" and bring all of it to a second hand store. Instead of everything just rotting away. Some mansions are full of beautiful antiques and no family has been in that house for 20 years. I don't think there coming back. The antiques are worth saving.i don't understand the logic of letting it rot away. In one mansion. The guy's found a safe ut was open and there were probably about 15 nice size diamond's in the jewelry paper. Plus like 10 grand cash. I'm sorry I'm taking that

Another fascinating and curious house! That library! So many design styles in the house, and the bathrooms! Just crazy. A few things I noticed: The leg on the hearth in the kitchen looked like a cured leg of pork, prosciutto or something similar. The small antlers probably belong to adults of a small species of deer, like the roe deer. The red egg sacs are so interesting, I've been googling...no spider lays red eggs, and can't find anything that does. The thing under the moth in its display case is its cocoon. The table with all the documents look like stock certificates, but they are from several countries, Argentina, Russia, and Societe Indochinoise is interesting - Indochina was the name given to Vietnam when the French colonized it. The financial certificate is probably from a corporation of that name that the home owners invested in. It's dated 1919, and the French colonization went on through the 1950s. The piece of the marble writing set that Sam thought might be for stamping is a blotter. Fountain pens that worked with dipped ink were very messy, they left blobs of wet ink on the paper, the blotter was used (usually with a felt along the bottom) to soak up the extra ink. That entire estate is gorgeous, it's so sad what the French government allows to happen to these properties.

This is one of your greatest, thank you so much for taking us to down town Paris at Christmas, I was so shocked to see that there is ancient buildings still standing from the civilization that built the unique styles of architecture from Tartaria. So sad we were never taught about these people from our past, their history was erased from time. Thanks again guys, I always look forward for your next adventure.

There are many reasons, 'droits de succesion', what you have to pay upon inheriting; the taxes after that and since you can't desinherit your children in France, often they fight over what to do with the property, may be they can't afford to buy each other out. And then maintenance, it's freaking cold in these big, old properties and if you do not heat them properly, mold takes over and it all deteriorates. Repairs alone on such roofs could be prohibitive. Owners might live and work far away and vacation properties left unattended are liable to be burglarized... a burglary every 90 seconds in France, so yes, it is sad, but inevitable, the era of land owner aristocracy with staff and ground keepers or well to do bourgeoisie who could afford to live and maintain such properties are over. The reality of owning such property is difficult, not romantic.

The murals in the library are dated 1929. The “secret” room you stumbled upon would be a men’s dressing room. No bath or shower, only a bidet and basin. There is a can of shaving cream in the case on the shelf. Brilliant.

Merry Christmas! What an amazing house!! Loved the commentary. Loved the black tiled bathroom! Bats are mammals so they don’t lay eggs… Also, the documents in one of the rooms were for $100 shares (each) in a French company (Société indochinoise de commerce, agriculture et finance). It was created in France in 1919 to help develop parts of the French colonial empire, which Indochina was a part of (east of India and south of China) - which was not an actual country. The company made huge profits and people who had bought shares would also profit when they sold their shares. Great video, thank you for sharing.

Amazing! Those bathrooms, those bedrooms! That window in the bathroom/office was stunning. The rocker was a goose neck rocking chair. My mom has one that’s been in our family for decades. Baby Deer don’t have antlers lol The Deer skulls are probably Roe Deer prickets ( young males) and the little antlers are probably from male Muntjac Deer which are considered an invasive species in Europe. Female Deer don’t have antlers either. It’s definitely weird though seeing them hung up in these old places but I suppose it’s a status symbol of how good a hunter was way back in the day When people ate wild food on a regular basis.

Nice thought but it's more likely that booklet with the royal names was just some kind of publication they saved. Much like many people in the UK having Princess Di memorabilia. It doesn't mean the Princess Di lived there. It does seem likely that it was the estate of a noble family.

I am watchin this again now after watchin 2 other explorer attempts at showing it! One was 40 mins and one 58 minutes. They skipped SO much in their slip shod shortcut tours. You two did it THOROUGHLY opening everything up and going everywhere except that lower tower bathroom door in the twin metal bed frame servants room by kitchen...that had a chair in front of it. But yours was so satisfying and I feel like I truly know the Castle. Keep up the diligent work. You two also spot things accurately like the bat droppings source for stains on the canopy bed and more.

This was my favourite explore! The French architecture is just so exquisite. The internal design and decoration was so tastefully done. A shame about the not so tasteful upgrades to what looked like the 70’s (bathrooms) but maybe by that time there was only one or two elderly people living there and couldn’t afford the upkeep. What a beautiful house. The library was my favourite room. There was such a mix of decor throughout, most rooms very light and vibrant (and probably very modern back then). You could feel the love and warmth of the past in there, it didn’t seem creepy, more of a happy place. It’s just so very sad (I know we all say it) to see these beautiful pieces of history just disappear. Makes me think about how attached our society is to materialism now. This is a classic example of - you can’t take it with you! There must be family still alive and quite young members too who most likely own it. Such complexity in owning these buildings. Thank you for being so respectful and showing us these beautiful homes.

You need to watch the “Bros of Decay” because the spokesperson shows such respect and maturity when he discusses the previous owners and their possessions . The double pictures are steriographs, you put them in a viewer with two eye holes like binoculars and get a 3d image. What you thought might be a video camera on the desk on the landing is a pre 60's 35mm slide projector to show slides on a white screen or wall. The needles in the tin were for 78 spped wind up gramaphones, I have one working and have to buy tge needles and change for every record.
