As a person from Christchurch NZ, I can assure you "tea" meaning dinner is very common and is easily distinguishable from "tea" meaning drink because the drink usually has the prefix "cuppa" as in "cuppa tea".
@Wyrmwood66

yes this one was a strange one for me as well. I couldn't believe that you called supper tea and had tea hot in a cup with milk. When I was little my cousin must have been married to an english lady and for breakfast we thought she made a few mistakes for one she gave us a cup we thought must have been coffee that we was not old enough to drink but then we learned that she had put tea in in instead of coffee plus she put ketchup on our scrambled eggs. We was a little shocked that a grown woman could do this. We lived in the states. So it was a little strange to us. We drank ice tea and never put ketchup on our eggs. It is almost impossible to go out here in NZ and order ice tea. As a matter of fact you rarely get ice in any drink unless you request it. I have been in NZ for 25 years now I still say supper. I do warn people that visit that when tea is offered it is hot in a cup and usually with milk and they usually reply oh no.

As an expat Canadian who has been living in New Zealand for over 20 years, I have enjoyed watching your journey through my adopted home. Insurance is cheap in New Zealand because we have a no fault insurance scheme called the Accident Compensation Commission which covers all accidental injuries, including car accidents. It even covers tourists. As someone else commented, a good way to be introduced to Vegemite is by spreading it thinly on a piece of toast and grilling cheese on it - called my some a "mousetrap". People think it is a sweet spread like Nutella, so are often unpleasantly surprised. One of my favourite discoveries was afghans - a tasty biscuit with a dollop of chocolate ganache topped with a walnut. Yum.

@@GlenAndMado They have a big voice for such a small bird. We live in Auckland and have them in our garden. I love them. We have some fantails that come inside the house in Summer, sing us a song, then flit about catching any fruit flies (we always have a fruit bowl and the vege/fruit-scrap bin for the compost that the fruit flies appear out of nowhere for in the Summer). The fantails sometimes have a wee tour of the house while they're inside, might land somewhere for a bit of preening, sing us another song and then flit outside again. They'll often make several visits a day, but always sing a little song when they come in, and another before they leave. It is like they're saying "Hello" and "Goodbye". Some people think it's bad luck to have them come inside, I think it's a privilege. They are like honoured guests and once we figured out they were coming in for the fruit flies we'd take the lid off the scrap bin for them for a few minutes so they could have a little extra. :-)

Mmm, it's a recipe people often make with their kids, since it's easy and requires very little actual cooking. I think it crept into the bakeries and cafes as a nostalgia thing. If you need to be gluten free, use a basic biscuit/cookie, such as something made with rice flour. I'd say the brand/product name of what my family used, but it doesn't appear to be available anymore and...I forgot it.

The pleasure was absolutely all ours Glen and Mado 👏 👏 👏 Your unique way of showing our country to the world was equally unique to we Kiwis. We've been a bit grumpy post-covid so your almost childlike joy was just the tonic we needed to remind us how lucky we are. If ever you decided to come back on a more permanent basis, and for some bureaucratic reason got turned down, I'd join the inevitable street protests that would follow. Yeah nah, your both sweet as 💕

I came in with a smile on my face when I read about the "Ferry " bread. Yes it's a party bread and so easy to do for children's birthday's etc, but it's "Fairy bread " as I see someone else has pointed out. It's a failing of the New Zealand accent that Fairy And Ferry are almost indistinguishable,, by the locals as well. (I wonder if children think they get visits from the tooth Ferry!I ) I thought it would improve but that was 1953 and I've made no impression. Probably my fault as I don't like to call people out on pronunciation. I prefer Vegemite to Marmite and you can get away with not having to use it so sparingly. It' because it's yeast-based, it's a flavour that takes you by surprise. I've loved your time in NZ and you've been so natural and friendly. Thank you for sharing with us, and do keep going please.

You'd have to get very, very rural before you heard it pronounced ferry bread. I'd expect the same people have out-houses and no indoor toilets.

Community support is common. In my area we had 2 major floods within a few months destroying part of our town. The local news station had to put out a call to others in the region not to come to town as we had too many volunteers already - they had come from over 120 kilometres away to assist and we were a bit full. My second point is regarding the 'pokie' machines in pubs. The profits are taken by a couple of Charitable Trusts who distribute that to applicants from sports or community groups to fulfil the needs of the community. The pubs don't actually make money from these, but it does attract a few extra customers.

Not sure if you mean seeing kiwi at all or specifically a wild kiwi, but if you are talking seeing one at all, then there is a Kiwi House in Whangarei (Northland) at the Heritage Park in Maunu next to the museum & bird recovery centre. It's a nocturnal house, so can see the Kiwi out & about doing its thing during daylight hours.
